  • One of the weirdest episodes in the history of the railways. An episode in which Isambard Kingdom Brunel pushed the technology of the time beyond its limits. He showed you can only succeed if you sometimes fail.

    I think modern technology could solve many of the problems. Example we don’t need to use leather- we have many synthetic materials now which would do a more efficient job. As an out and back system the railway was a good idea which could be used at airports for a start. Thanks for the extremely educational video.

    Couldn't the system be viable today if the leather valves were replaced with a fiberglass or plastic? Rat, moisture, and temperature fluctuations might be solved...? Too bad that the genius of the invention was a little ahead of it's technological requirements...that working model with the seated lady was really impressive, thank you...
