    Im an NI and MPC user. One thing you didn't touch on unless I just missed it is NI introducing CLIPS. That changes the entire game. This is no longer a loop-based production system which means we can now place audio or patterns absolutely anywhere on the grid and record in free mode. This is something we've all waited a lifetime for out of "beat DAWs". That alone, to me at least, means MPC really has some catching up to do now.

    Imagine Roland dropping a new MV with the new Fantom sound engine, and updated I/O and storage. That would be revolutionary. Or Yamaha finally releasing a RS7000 update with the Montage sound engine and better sampling. Those would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥. NI still has much work to do.

    Great take. I’m a Maschine head, and I feel pretty similarly to you. I mostly just think the price point is too high for what it includes. It looks like a good device and I’d love to have one, but it feels like it should be more in the $900 range than $1400. I don’t personally care much about the touch screen (already very adept at Maschine’s controls from my Mk3), and I don’t personally use CV gate, but I agree those are both important features if you want MPC users to switch and/or dawless types to really love it. The lack of a battery is a pretty big disappointment to me. The included synths are huge, and I would expect NI to continue to port over all of their VSTs. And they have probably the single biggest library of sounds of any company, so that’s massive (forgive the pun). Overall, I want the thing - it looks great. But the price is just way too high.

    Dude. I love your channel. I've seen a few videos before but just now subscribed. I have no idea why you don't have more subscribers. And I have no idea why you've got even one dislike on this video. Every video I've seen you do boils down to real talk. Down-to-earth insight and thoughts. You know your info inside and out, and it's obvious your experience shows in all your videos.
    That said, I totally agree with everything you said about the new Maschine+. It's way, way overpriced.
    No battery. No XLR input or phantom power for a condenser mic. I've seen the CPU % skyrocket in that official NI video, and BoBeats' video, as well.
    Maschine MK3 with a laptop has been used as a battery-powered standalone solution for the last few years. Short USB cable, you're good to go for 3-8 hours on your laptop's battery with the lid closed. For me, I get 4 hours, with a 9-year old powerful-as-fuck Dell Precision.
    With the laptop... you get all the storage that's inside your laptop (for me, 1tb system drive and a second 1tb for additional storage).. and, the benefit of using a DAW or Maschine as a plugin inside a DAW. I have Reaper, Ableton, etc... it's all there. And it's portable and powerful.
    I've never been much of an Akai guy... my whole life. I had an MPC60 years ago I should have held onto that my cousin sold me for just $50. Who'd have thought, pre-CZcams, it would become that much of a collector's item? DJ Shadow used one on his debut record.... and by then, I sold the MPC60. Just never dug the workflow much. Bought the MPC2000XL, liked it a little more but... then I bought a 1000. Sold them both as soon as Maschine 1.0 came out. Chopping samples was an absolute breeze. WAY faster than with the original MPCs.
    Then, just a few months ago, Akai released MPC Beats. I was hooked, right away. Didn't think much of the software before, but now I'm like... ok. I get it. I bought a used MPC Studio black, got an MPC Touch used, and I'm considering an MPC One, for the dedicated buttons and the touchscreen, combined. And I couldn't agree more with the lack of good presets for those plugins. I tend to reach for the same 3 or 4 sounds. But I guess the strength of the MPC workflow is Keygroups... multisamples of all types of instruments, played chromatically, through 16 Level. That's how the MPC workflow was born. Also, I should say the factory content (especially the stuff that comes free with MPC Beats) is GOOD. What I don't like about Maschine is when you load a kit, it's just drum sounds and occasionally, useless weird electronic zaps and spacey sounds. When you load say, a hip-hop kit (Program) through Akai, you get good drum sounds and melodic hits/stabs all in the same key.. so you can immediately jam on all the pads, and make some music, without pressing record! Akai got it right with the software content.... that's what I wish NI would do more of. Instant drum sounds and melodic hits, so you can finger-drum and trigger stabs and jam on some golden-era shit, in seconds.
    NI missed the mark, here. The main thing us Maschine users wanted for YEARS was a proper arranger/song mode, and the freedom to put anything anywhere on the timeline. Finally this is coming, which is great. But no way would that update ever make me consider selling my MK3. The arranger alone is what we've waited for, forever. Maschine+ is probably NI's way of winning Maschine users back, who bailed on Maschine since the arranger has sucked royally since day one. Too little, too late.
    As a MIDI controller... Maschine Studio and MK3 (and even the MK2) are so, so dope.
    $1400... nope. I'd buy an MPC Live 2 before Maschine+... (and I might, down the road... I really do like that Touch a lot... just wish the Live 2 had more useful dedicated buttons, especially Program Edit!! A glaring omission).
    Anyway.. blah blah blah. Love the video and opinions, Sight. Thanks for the great content!!!

      @labandlegacy  Před 4 lety

      First of all, thank you for the fantastic feedback bro, it means a lot honestly man, I genuinely appreciate it 🙏
      Secondly, thanks for the elaborate response on the video. After making this video I think it's past due that I break down my serious gripes with MPC, because it is far from perfect and has more than it's fair share of issues lol. You're spot on regarding it's weaknesses and strengths.
      I honestly don't understand the dislikes either, other than obvious fanboyism, and possibly my lengthy preface before I got to Maschine. I just wanted to be clear that I have switched platforms before, and it's not below me to do it again for a superior product(at least for my needs). As a member of the producer community I am truly disappointed in the "Maschine guys" takes on this unit. It is some of the most either disingenuous, or inexperienced content I've seen in a while amd I honestly feel bad for a lot of their subs because they are not getting into what are, to me at least, glaring issues with it. With that said, I'm glad a lot of Maschine users in the community see my video for what it is. As honest a critique I could make with the information provided and with my experience using a standalone device for a few months now considered. I honestly hope this is the start of a real commitment from NI to push the market forward and I already see innovation in the software. I just hope the hardware choices don't choke it out before it gets to truly shine.

    • @DopamineOverload
      @DopamineOverload Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the great reply! Yeah, totally agree about the "Maschine guys" and their take on it.
      I've hated Akai for a long time (blocking comments on their videos, ignoring support, ignoring fixes for bugs, etc)... but, they're on a roll this year.
      As far as gear I use... Maschine, Ableton, Reaper... MK3, Push2 / Launchpads, and random controllers for Reaper... and now, MPC Studio black / Touch... and inevitably, the One and Live 2 (as soon as my tax return comes)... sometimes you need all the gear, to get everything done that you want to. :)
      Both companies are pushing forward, I think. And they have to, or they'll lose. No one's forgotten about Beatmaker 3 by Intua. :)
      So what do you hate, about the MPC hardware and software?
      Thanks again, Sight!

Is taking me forever to save back that money to order mpc one again, now that my job re-open. For all of you guys who buy gear and then more and then more. I believe u have fallen in a materialistic trap/loop for the material. Well mpc one has all a man with nothing needs to make albums. And the price point is not beatable. To me it makes no sense. I sold my maschine studio on 2019 right before I went homeless and it hurt my soul in such a way. But I had some lessons I needed to learn. I feel such an enormous joy that mpc one exists. Agree with all of your points. As an MPC Live user for less than a year, and totally in love...workflow, sampling. Throwing those samples into the Quantum and GR-1 then back into the MPC is a blast. Making more beats/songs than ever and wish I got an MPC 20 years ago.
    If NI were smart, they would release a box like this without the software, just the SYNTHS.
    Give me lots of knobs to control parameters, filters, LFO's etc so we can sound design easier than on a pc. Doesn't need pads as it's designed for those with controllers/interfaces so lots of room.
    Solid FX, min 3 active.On board control parameter (like the Octatrack slider) for distortion or lo-fi bit crushing etc
    32 voices and 4 part multitimbral ideal, or 16 voices/2 part MT to get a lower price point. (I'd be sampling this thing for days either way!)
    Arpeggiator, basic sequencer (possibly)
    Upgradeable to new VSTs and patch downloads.
    Brother, I'd easily pay $750-1K if they did it right. Would take advantage of the many people going dawless. Just the MPC user market alone would eat it up, as you said, the internal synths are lacking (I use 90% of my own samples).
    This shouldn't be that hard to do and I think it would kill. What other sound module (or synth) would compete with this? I wonder how many others would be into this as much as myself...

Even if it didn't come with a battery, they should've added a battery compartment and give folks that want it the option to purchase a battery. I also could sign off on another commenter's remark that this could have been a rush job to remain flexible in the market. A good friend of mine that actually had input on what NI was doing with the M+ told me last November that they were working on the stand-alone maschine. He told me back THEN that they were ready to release it, but they got a lot of negative feedback from the producer insiders about it being stand-alone and yet still having to be plugged in. So they delayed it. It’s interesting that half a year later they dropped it and still didn’t add the battery!
    I think they should have released the M+ as stand-alone with battery. And then released a cheaper stand-alone micro version to compete with the mpc one that needs to be plugged in.... or just have batteries for both units. They definitely have to drop that price. I’m a huge Maschine user. I have been considering the MPC Live for some time because of the ability to take it out of the studio, on a plane, on a beach... You know, places where you don’t have a power outlet. I can take my MK3 and my laptop anywhere I want. Plug the MK3 my laptop via usb only and drum away. With the M+, I can only use it wherever there’s a power source. And if I’m somewhere that has a power source, I might as well just plug in my laptop too! The M+ could have been $500 and that still would be a deal killer for me.

Prior to this I had the MPC Studio with a Macbook which has a very similar form factor to the MK3 and it was a sick setup. Very powerful, portable and could go unplugged for about 2 hours. Prior to the Live 2 it was probably the most fun I've had making music. Just can't see why someone would choose this over a MK3 and a laptop.

And if this is already 1400usd that would have to be like 2400usd. If they come up with a Maschine Studio + that would most likely be the next step for Maschine with a touch screen but then they should have released this for 800-900 usd and have the Studio + be 1400-1700usd. 5 years from now is when i see Native updating the + to true portability and a touch screen.

    • @slapopimp
      @slapopimp Před 4 lety

      I think it can be surmised that NI had the M+ already in development ( some time back ) when Akai came out with the Mpc live. Taking into account all their recent troubles and pink slipping of numerous employees not long ago, I think their options were limited and the price point reflects them trying to recoup and recover. When their troubles and downsizing began, the M+ was probably put on the shelf and left in limbo. This is likely why it lacks a number of expected features, because it reflects the time period it was actually conceived. Lets not forget that the MK3 was released October 5, 2017, so it likely was conceived in 2016.
      I think NI pulled the plug on the M+ when they saw what Akai had to offer. I believe the decision was made to resurrect the release of the M+ to see if it could help save the company and bring in revenue. They were doing too much with releasing DJ stuff, audio interfaces, the Jam and keyboard controllers. If this flops, who knows what NI's future holds.

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 Před 4 lety

      slapopimp I personally don't think the + was in development for long. This looks like a quick fix. Akai has released 4 standalone MPC's already (5if you count Live I & II) making it a standard Native wasn't following and NI was hearing about it constantly and had to react.

    • @slapopimp
      @slapopimp Před 4 lety

      @@epicon6 When the downsizing happened and more info started flowing from employees that were affected as posted in forums, I saw a comment about a Machine hardware that was being worked on by a team that was pink slipped. I'm a beta tester for the Maschine software and updates and features aren't swift and abundant. These things take time unless a massive team is working on it's development. With that in mind, you can't crank out an hardware device like this in a month or two especially a small company that had massive layoffs and restructuring. I think this device reflects it's time of development.
      Akai MPC's and samplers have always been hardware. Maschine had knocked Akai off their square for a hot minute and they responded with their own software/ controller to compete. Akai simply returned to their roots and then some. NI already has a solid Maschine user base and I don't think they felt an urgency to compete with a company known for hardware all of a sudden.

    The primary advantage of Maschine+ over Live II is going to be the integration of the large instruments libraries. True, we can auto-record instruments for later use in the Live, but it's not the same as having instant access to all the instruments. The second advantage of Maschine+ is going to be marketability to previous Maschine users who don't want to learn MPC workflow. Obviously, in every other category MPC brings the smack down. Overall, just the addition of battery power would be enough to convince me to buy Maschine+. Not to replace my Live II but to augment it with all those instruments. iamsight Absolutely. I was just telling my wife a few days ago that I wanted a standalone unit. I told her I was thinking of getting a Live or Live II. Then I see the Maschine+. She saw the price and looked at me crazy,lol. This is a woman that knows nothing about music equipment. At one point I told myself that I would pay extra for the MK3 workflow in standalone. But that is silly of me to do. Like you said “why pay more for less features”?

    Great Topic! Though I have the MPC One, I've been holding on to my Maschine MK3 and I had a Maschine Studio...
    I've been expecting Native Instruments to go Standalone.
    But let's see what they do.

      I don't think either is better than the other, I think it's all about which one makes it easier to do the style of music you enjoy. 💯💯💯
