  • Just a short demo of how the Abbot's Bromley Horn Dance might sound on the pipe & tabor.
NB: this is not meant to be danced to, but rather just a demo. I don't believe I got the repeats correct anyway.

How old I'd this piece of music? I know that the horn dance is an ancient AngloSaxon dance but I have seen it performed to other tunes.

I'm not sure of the age. I think it was collected in the 20th century, possibly by Peter Kennedy, who recorded an old fellow playing it on a concertina or accordion. The predominant intervals in the melody seem idiomatic to fiddle-playing, and the range suggests something much later than a ritual dance melody. Personally, I would place this melody at somewhere in the 18th century, and no earlier than the 17th century.

Stefan - respect! Especially for dispelling the ancient nonsense - you are correct!
