I WILL ENDURE: The Mantras of Frater Perdurabo (preview)
This is a preview slideshow of music and images from the album "I WILL ENDURE: The Mantras of Frater Perdurabo" by Stefan Markos.
The album was created from the mantras listed in Aleister Crowley's Liber ABA (Book Four). Stefan created and played the musical arrangements in an all-acoustic medieval/world music meditative style. The video depicts block print images associated with each track on the album, all designed, hand-carved, and printed by Stefan.
The album was multi-tracked by Everett Nicholas Medlock, who contributed guitar to the album as well. Danielle Franklin chanted and played harp.
The music and artwork are all copyrighted 2023 (the principal melody lines in mantras 2, 3, 4, and 9 are from Book Four, and are the only musical elements free of my copyright).

Bartholomew Faire plays "Miss Hamilton" by the Irish harper/composer Cornelius Lyons
zhlédnutí 318Před 2 lety
Cornelius Lyons was a contemporary of the famous Turlough O'Carolan. Both were blind harpers and composers, and according to legends and anecdotes, they seem to have been fierce competitors. While Carolan was influenced by the fashionable Italian music of the time, Lyons seems to have been inspired by the German style... though it's hard to tell: this is the only tune by Lyons that has survived...
Bartholomew Faire plays "Mabel Kelly" by Turlough O'Carolan
zhlédnutí 258Před 2 lety
Bartholomew Faire, represented here by Danielle Franklin (harp), Louis Rodriguez (citole), and Stefan Dollak (mandolin), plays the Carolan tune "Mabel Kelly." Carolan was a blind harper/composer of Ireland, who would travel and provide music, poetic verse, and compositions for wealthy patrons. The identity of Mabel Kelly is uncertain, very likely a young unmarried daughter of a nobleman. The me...

This tune is attributed to the famous Irish harper/composer Turlough O'Carolan (late 17th-early 18th century). Featuring Danielle Franklin (harp), Louis Rodriguez (citole), and Stefan Dollak (pipe & tabor). The melody is by Carolan, and is in the public domain. The bass and chord progression is by Stefan Dollak, with all rights reserved.
Bartholomew Faire plays "Cremonea" by Turlough O'Carolan
zhlédnutí 186Před 2 lety
This is "Cremonea," a tune by the great Irish composer Turlough (or Terence) O'Carolan, played by Bartholomew Faire. Carolan was a blind harp player and composer who lived around the same time as the great Italian composers Geminiani and Corelli, and much of his music seems to be a fascinating blend of the Italian baroque style with the Irish tradition. In this video, Bartholomew Faire are: Dan...

Here is a snippet from the November 14, 2021 Bartholomew Faire performance at the famous Musical Instrument Museum of Phoenix, Arizona. Danielle Franklin, Louis Rodriguez, David Rachor, and Stefan Dollak played an outdoor set of improvisations on ground basses on a delightful afternoon! This tune is "The Buffens," structured on the 'passamezzo moderno' chord structure, popular in the 16th centu...
Star Wars theme music on the medieval hurdy-gurdy
zhlédnutí 2,4KPřed 3 lety
Composed by the legendary and prolific John Williams, these are themes associated with the end of Star Wars: Episode IV "A New Hope", in which our heroes get medals, R2D2 bounces around a little, Chewie says "grraaaannnh" because he didn't get a medal, Han winks at Carrie like he's some kinda nerf-herding scoundrel, and they all turn for a photo op just before the credits roll.
The Spider Man

My arrangement of the classic theme song, composed by Paul Francis Webster and Bob Harris. The Billy Van Singers and the Laurie Bower Singers can be heard on the original 1967 recording; they were paid for the session and have never received residuals. Likewise, I stand to gain nothing from this video; it's just a really fun song.
Buddy, can you spare a dime?
zhlédnutí 87Před 3 lety
This is my arrangement of the quintessential Great Depression song "Brother (Buddy), Can You Spare a Dime?" written by Yip Harburg and Jay Gorney for the 1932 musical revue "Americana." Apparently, the melody is based on a traditional Russian Jewish lullaby.
One Tin Soldier (Stefan Dollak, voice & guitar)
zhlédnutí 382Před 3 lety
This song was written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter. It was a minor hit for The Original Caste, and then it became very well known and associated with the film "Billy Jack" through the Jinx Dawson/Coven cover. For me, this is the song that inspired me to learn guitar. With love and fond memories, I dedicate my performance of this song to all my friends and campmates from my formative years...

Caro mio ben (voice + guitar)
zhlédnutí 205Před 3 lety
This is my arrangement of the famous Italian aria "Caro mio ben," by Tommaso Giordani. For many years, this song was attributed to his son Giuseppe Giordani, but it appears the song is a bit older. As I understand, there is a lute arrangement, so I might do another video of this song, featuring the lute.
15th century basse danse "Rosti Boli (Gioioso)" on Pipe & Tabor

The "Rosti Boli" ("roasted and boiled"?) basse danse, also known as "Gioioso," was a very popular basse danse of the 15th century, and appears in a few differenct manuscript sources. Some of these sources present the tune in a "major" mode, but I chose a source that expresses the same tune, only in a minor key. The sources have minimal musical information, to which I have added my own ornamenta...
15th century basse danse "Filles a marier" on pipe & tabor

A very popular basse danse of the 15th century, "Filles a marier" was a popular song tune, dance tune, and "cantus firmus" for virtuoso variations by composers. And it's jolly good fun on the pipe & tabor, too! Hope you enjoy my off-the-cuff performance.

This tune was popular in 12th century France, used by composers like Gautier de Coincy and Blondel de Nesle. In this video, I am playing a bladderpipe made by Petr Cip of the Czech Republic, fashioned after one depicted in the Escorial ms of the Cantigas de Santa Maria.

Beautiful. Where can I buy a similar 4 course lute please ? Thanks
Thanks! I believe these are still being made and exported from Pakistan, and are available through various vendors. It even looks like Amazon has them, for as good a price as you could find anywhere. The key search word is "Lute-kulele." www.amazon.com/Lute-kulele-T-Tenor-Variegated-Pegs/dp/B003ILQG6K/ref=sr_1_5?crid=ULYZRK2WHP9J&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.czOyicfBNmmrpMS3LiBhzpDcDI7arAdVcDYAS-BN0aWD5iIATNEEb6DLg8Hrm4_-IUSS7pZDwKEKCmek3RlXgMamRjUMxxbVAmkSfKjWfdUciLoGTdWQRe1xyKJkVWehaolFjvb2TSN3vjIuAnfqZgl6q8mJJq7zYL2w3cOOrUjJalzUqVJ__HEyEzJRwrZCT0pzTQKcBEGDJD0wYrcpo9wq_BQfQydBRMjxuvGl0K1Prd8jkv7XFDZCMCgj-jVm9J5clVDPPWgd0tzSwz9qgtEl9D1Wa3hO1AxpNVBih2Y.Zc_QCal-HKA-MslvAPKB-su6cyK79cs9PMVsSrvEj0w&dib_tag=se&keywords=lute&qid=1723085788&s=musical-instruments&sprefix=lute%2Cmi%2C131&sr=1-5

Very lovely sir! Great voice too!
It's amazing that this songs so good but the demo's from the companies sound so bad
very cool
I like the look of insanity that infrequently appears on your face, whilst playing , i suppose that comes with the hurdy gurdy like rosin and cotton..mmnaaghe...!😂
When I'm "in the zone," my face just lets go :)
@@stefanmarkos great music ,great face 😔
Is this instrument the "Lute-kulele" from Roosebeck?
Indeed it is!
@@stefanmarkosThanks.
how about the Imperial Theme?
I don't know if I'm ready to go to the Dark Side just yet. Besides, my arrangement reflects the ol' skool "episode IV" themes; the Imperial March didn't show up 'til episode V. That said, it's on my practice agenda, fer shurr.
What tuning are you using chief?
Hi there! Basic renaissance guitar tuning: G c e a, low to high. Also similar to a ukulele tuning, without the re-entrant low g.
@@stefanmarkos so basically low G uke tuning? That's pretty cool
Very good. Thank you.
Where did you get the twin tabor pipe with a drone?
Hi there! I rigged it up from the Susato "dolce-duo" twin mouthpiece, with the Susato "oriole" tabor pipe bodies. In this case, I am playing a C pipe (in D minor), using a B flat pipe as a drone, using the thumb-rest to cover the thumb hole on the back to give a D drone. Of course, sometimes it jumps to a different tone as I play, but at least it gives some fun and funky rhythm and harmony.
I didn't know about the dolce duo; thanks! I already own an oriole tinwhistle, so now I'm wondering if maybe I can just get the mouthpiece and a tabor pipe to go with it!@@stefanmarkos
I spoke too soon: I no longer see the dolce-duo available from Susato. Argh! That said, I have seen many other plastic pennywhistle manufacturers with similar items available. OR you could call Kelischek Workshop and see if they still have or make the dolce-duo mouthpiece (I don't see why not; it's basically two of their 'oriole' mouthpieces glued together at a slight angle). @@dereknolin5986
Ficou lindo no violão!
What kind of pipe is that?
Sounds great on that huge pipe.
I love it Stefan. Do you have a tambourine on your foot, or is someone else playing too ?

Can I ask for music sheet of this? Love it
wonderful!

What key is the pipe?? This was awesomee
@@stefanmarkos hi again, would you have a music sheet for this? I'm interested learning to play this
@@ZoeR. Hi there! Here's an edition from IMSLP: imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/176716/hfnm
Amazing. Inspirational. 🙏
Brilliant.
This right here is Welsh traditional music. 🏴
I'm not sure if this basse danse ever actually made it into Welsh trad, but then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it did!
@@stefanmarkos basse danse?
That's what this version of "jouissance" is: a 16th century basse danse (a certain type of courtly dance)... not to be confused with the 15th century basse danse. But that's all academic. I'll play it anywhere, anytime! :)
@@stefanmarkos did it come from France?
The earliest sources for "Jouissance" are from 16th century France. In this vid, I'm playing the basse danse version from Orchesographie (1589). There are versions that are a bit earlier, mostly from France, for voices, or other instruments, and I'm also aware of a German lute tablature from around 1530. Even so, I'm always surprised at how much popular entertainment managed to travel around in the middle ages and renaissance. I wouldn't be surprised if this tune ended up in the Welsh folk canon.

This was fantastic thank you sir
really cool! i think im gonna get myself a tabor and play it together with my washboard!
Sounds very medieval!
I'm thinking of getting either a lute-kulele, violin, or electric guitar for Christmas this year. I'll have seven months to figure it out.
Is that the seagull mandolin you have?
Yes, it is. It's a terrific instrument! And I've played a LOT of mandolins over the years.
There’s a timeless melancholy to this song. Thanks for presenting it so well.
Playing all those notes with just one hand! Masterful!
It kind of sounds like a mandolin, but maybe that's just the double course of strings.
This is a great instrument for any ukulele-playing hipster who also happens to be a D&D nerd.
If the instrument came with a D20 and beard oil, they'd fly off the shelves!
@@stefanmarkos You got that right!
I think I might want this for either my birthday or Christmas.
Now this is a damn cool instrument!
Lute-kuleles are awesome!
Just bought Roosebeck lute-kulele. Your playing is truly inspirational! Having hard time with the peg tuners. Looks like you've rigged some elastic bands around C and E pegs. Maybe I'll try it! Any other tips would be welcome. Thanks!
Hi Larry! Thanks for the kudos. What looks like elastic is actually a thick jewelry thread going about the peghead: I tied it to the strap, and it helps 'grasp' and balance the instrument (for lack of a second strap button). The peg tuners take a little getting used to. If your local music store has violin supplies, see if you can find a tube of what they might call "peg dope" or "peg soap": it's usually sold in something like a Chap-Stick container, and it's a mixture of pumice and soap which, when applied to the pegs, allows them to turn smoothly and hold their place. Have fun on your Lute-kulele journey, and feel free to send me whatever questions you might have.... I might even have answers!
Thank you. You have a new fan! I'll be seeking out all your postings.
Very nice rendition
I want one of these, but they're too expensive.
I understand. There's so many instruments I can play, and would love to have, but they're just so expensive. Especially the hurdy-gurdies.
@@stefanmarkos I know right? It's so tormenting.
awesome jam
Bravi ragazzi!!
Cool man! Where would you recommend buying a tabor pipe?
Thanks! For beginners, the Susato company in North Carolina makes some excellent quality tabor pipes out of plastic (that's what I'm playing here). There are makers in England (Malvern) and Catalonia (Marie Hulsens) that hand-make top-quality wood pipes once you get to the 'next level.'
Great info. Thanks for the help!
Nice job man!
