Did you know, that in the old town of Kalna, which is famous for its temples, you will also find weavers of one of the most famous weaves of India - the Jamdani? The Jamdani marks the coming together of two great traditions - the fine muslin and the opulent embroidery and designs that came from Persia. In this ground report, we take you on a journey on how this weave is being revived and the challenges it faces.
Once worth their weight in gold, the fine Muslin Jamdanis of Bengal almost vanished from looms. What happened & how was this prized weave revived? Catch our new series 'Heritage Matters', where we look at the people and institutions who are working to save our heritage.
Muslin Jamdanis are exquisite fabrics woven with fine cotton and intricate designs. They were once so prized that they were worth their weight in gold. But the colonial era and the industrial revolution almost wiped out this ancient craft from Bengal. How did this happen and how did some dedicated weavers and patrons manage to revive this heritage?

Jamdani is from the undivided Bengal. Bangladesh has got the GI for Jamdani, no doubt, because the original hub was around Dhaka but even today on both the sides of the border weavers weave beautiful authentic Jamdani.

Most Bengalis know that jamdani is from Dhaka area of Bangladesh and we all covet it as Dhakai jamdani and also differentiate it from the type woven around Kolkata. Kolkata weave never used to be called Dhakai jamdani. However there was never free import of this sari from Bangladesh. So the Kolkata jamdani is now quite sophisticated. Although I am from Kolkata I do agree Kolkata's weave should not be called Dhakai jamdani.@@fahmidapatrawala9346
