Used to go listen to John Fahey and Robbie Bahso at a coffee house in Berkeley, CA back around 1964-65. Both astonishingly masterful guitarists. Robbie had more soul, Fahey had more technical expertise but was kind of an egotistical jerk. That was when I owned the Questing Beast coffee house there.
I bet that was amazing!! Lucky you. Thanks for sharing, I can totally imagine that about Fahey vs Basho 😂
Fahey had technical expertise- but not for singing while playing, as he confessed to find it difficult to play and vocalize at the same time. We can accept that he simply preferred not to sing, but perhaps his poor attitude was compensating for this handicap he may have felt next to his peers? Love to hear the stories, thx!
@@ebenholmes3235 very interesting point; we sometimes perceive others as being a negative presence, negatively communicating their expression, when maybe they are actually reflecting their own insecurities, and over compensating in other areas…
@@kimmysmithmusic I read an interview with Fahey, where he was asked about Basho. He was plain insulting and nasty about him, mocked him and basically said he was full of shit and nobody could stand him. Nothing but open bitterness from Fahey, sad and disappointing to read.
I could listen to Basho talk as long as I can listen to his music. Which is forever. What a wide eyed and articulate American.
A random suggestion by CZcams. Lucky day!
Many play or sing. Some present music. A rare few reveal their shining souls to our darkened souls.
This whole album is pure magic. Robbie Basho was a lonely genius in his own world.
If America has a soul of its own, beyond what it has imported - and as a Brit I don't really know - this is surely the album that best captures it.
Well said!
Yes! "American Primitive" channelling "weird old America".
I'm here because I heard of this album in an adrianne lenker interview. I'm travelling places using only one mind...
This album blows my mind away.
I kept thinking of Anthony and the Johnsons, and Tim and Jeff Buckley, although it obviously sounds more like old fashioned country, and 70s folk.
He likes to noodle like Adrienne Lenker. His voice can be lovely.
Its weird, I have been listening to Basho a lot recently and the other day I actually kind of thought of Jeff Buckley as I was listening. Idk why, probably the passion.
Orphan's Lament destroys me...thank you Robbie.
I love this album , so much yearning and silence
the wails and vocal runs in green river suite, my goodness robbie
It really is a "different type of feeling". When I hang out with people that enjoy older music as much as I do, they want me to put stuff on, and I really want to put Basho on, but I know they wouldn't get it. They just want to hear the upbeat rock stuff. You know, radio hits. They aren't ready for this yet.
you gotta start from somewhere
@@gxrsky thanks, I was back listening to basho again today too.
@@nugsymalone1247 I know a lot of people that would'nt get it, but i've been surprised so many times about how someone reacts to music well outside their horizons and love it instantly that i dont think it's about people, but more about the moment where you present them with such musical gifts. Choose the right time, create the perfect moment, and anybody worth a damn would understand the "special" music you're submitting to their ears.
Hope it helps create that "family" with which you'll all share such beauty as this album.
My sympathy to you and whoever is curious about beautifull things, love from France.
This is like the only thing that could ever make me want to visit the US. Something about the melodies illustrates the natural beauty of the landscape in a way very little music seems able to. This album is so full of love.
I agree, well put.
Stunning. Just stunning. Robbie was an extraordinary musician. Thank you for sharing this.
Orphans lament leaf in the wind night way. The Holy Trinity
New/ old...
What I just discovered... Very good 🧓♥️🍀🍀😊👌
I love John Fahey, but it's the first time i listen to Basho.... great music!
Fahey will always be king in my mind but Basho has quite a few great tunes. I love his weird tunings
Beautiful and unique stuff. WIsh the original Windham Hill vinyl pressing wasn't so rare.
loved it
Amazing
Wonderful, beautiful
Thank you 🙏🙏

Pure quality.
Superbe
Who else came here through Adrienne Lenker?
yup
I'd really like to know if there is more than one guitar playing at the same time on this album. It sounds like it absolutely must be using a layering effect sometimes, but I can't tell if it might not just be some godly ridiculous skill I can't quite comprehend.
Thats a twelve string acoustic guitar hes playing
@@pupusaslordking5617 even so, it sounds like its gotta be more than one at times. There are for sure other instruments going on in this album like violins for example so I think chances are pretty good there is some guitar layering.
no there isnt dude, its just Basho all by himself., Robbie is playing the twelve string with his right hand and the 6 string with his left hand, the Piano with his bare feet and the violin with his teeth.
@@alicasoto4497 I think he whistles with his lips too. Just amazing.
its that "1%" percent that disliked the video.......
You can't let 'em get to you! As the guy said, some people would be against apple pie and mother's milk (I don't think he meant in combination, I'd be against that myself).
Commercial breaks not between songs, but within songs. Horrible. Especially for this artist.
