    Used to go listen to John Fahey and Robbie Bahso at a coffee house in Berkeley, CA back around 1964-65. Both astonishingly masterful guitarists. Robbie had more soul, Fahey had more technical expertise but was kind of an egotistical jerk. That was when I owned the Questing Beast coffee house there.

      I bet that was amazing!! Lucky you. Thanks for sharing, I can totally imagine that about Fahey vs Basho 😂

    • @ebenholmes3235
      @ebenholmes3235 Před 2 lety +4

      Fahey had technical expertise- but not for singing while playing, as he confessed to find it difficult to play and vocalize at the same time. We can accept that he simply preferred not to sing, but perhaps his poor attitude was compensating for this handicap he may have felt next to his peers? Love to hear the stories, thx!

      @@ebenholmes3235 very interesting point; we sometimes perceive others as being a negative presence, negatively communicating their expression, when maybe they are actually reflecting their own insecurities, and over compensating in other areas…

      @@kimmysmithmusic I read an interview with Fahey, where he was asked about Basho. He was plain insulting and nasty about him, mocked him and basically said he was full of shit and nobody could stand him. Nothing but open bitterness from Fahey, sad and disappointing to read.

    If America has a soul of its own, beyond what it has imported - and as a Brit I don't really know - this is surely the album that best captures it.

    I kept thinking of Anthony and the Johnsons, and Tim and Jeff Buckley, although it obviously sounds more like old fashioned country, and 70s folk.
    He likes to noodle like Adrienne Lenker. His voice can be lovely.

    It really is a "different type of feeling". When I hang out with people that enjoy older music as much as I do, they want me to put stuff on, and I really want to put Basho on, but I know they wouldn't get it. They just want to hear the upbeat rock stuff. You know, radio hits. They aren't ready for this yet.

      @@nugsymalone1247 I know a lot of people that would'nt get it, but i've been surprised so many times about how someone reacts to music well outside their horizons and love it instantly that i dont think it's about people, but more about the moment where you present them with such musical gifts. Choose the right time, create the perfect moment, and anybody worth a damn would understand the "special" music you're submitting to their ears.
      Hope it helps create that "family" with which you'll all share such beauty as this album.
      My sympathy to you and whoever is curious about beautifull things, love from France.

    I'd really like to know if there is more than one guitar playing at the same time on this album. It sounds like it absolutely must be using a layering effect sometimes, but I can't tell if it might not just be some godly ridiculous skill I can't quite comprehend.
