  • Land Rover Defender LT85 22C rebuild (Long Video!)
    In this video, I strip an LT85 5 speed split case gearbox (Santana)
    This is the first time I have rebuilt one, so I started following the workshop manual step by step
    However, the manual was for the solid case gearbox so I gave that up half way through!
    As CZcams have moved the goals to become monetized, and I have a niche channel, funding is never going to happen, so I have set up a Patreon as I would like to get a higher speed upload, which means I get post more videos, AND in 1080
    Takes me about 2.5 hours to upload a 15 minutes at the moment.
    I will be giving credits to my supporters at the end of my videos from now on. I am very grateful to one and all!

    Re-watching this with interest as I'm contemplating tackling this job soon myself. It's either that or an Ashcrofts refurbed box. Hmmm. 🤔

      The thing about gearboxes is, they are like a mechanical sudoku.
      They look impossible, but they are logical - you need a manual, BUT also the video will help explain the manual! ( on my memory stick)

    this repair video of the LT85 is just the one I needed..!!! I've bought a 109 Santana Land Rover, with the 5-speed gear-box. This is very interesting, Mike!!

      There are 2 types of LT85 - a solid case and a split case - I have not seen a solid one

      @@BritannicaRestorations The truth is that I still haven't seen the actual truck, except by pictures, so I can't tell exactly what type of gear-box it has. I've got a pile of pictures and I know the model and date it was built, but lots of other details are still unknown to me.

      I wondered when someone would spot that!
      Yes it is a real chronograph and I wear it all the time
      Good watch but the straps are weak
      Thanks for the support

    You need a nylon hammer so badly !! I was given one a couple of years ago, bloody marvellous thing which I would never have bought for myself as I thought they wouldn't be much use, I was wrong....

    I'm interested to hear you say that 2nd gear was hard/impossible to select. My experience is that with the recommended 20W50 oil, second gear is impossible when cold. The gearbox works much better with a thinner grade.

    Perhaps a long-shot 5-years on, but any chance you still have the PDF link to that LT85 20C workshop manual?
    The 22C version (split-case) of the manual seems to be readily available online, but I'm having trouble finding the 20C version.
    I've got the Heavy Duty (20C) version in my Santana 119 and it sounds as if it may need a new bearing or two on the layshaft.
    FANTASTIC video, by the way; thanks!

    Sir did you know how much engine torque this gearbox cant take before starting to brake. Cuz i have a litle project in mind that has something to do with an isuzu 4bd1t (australian version of 110)

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Před 6 lety +1

      Good question - and I do not know. I will try and find out.
      I know an R380 is designed for 380 Nm of torque - and they are not renown for strength on the layshaft. (the 5th and reverse end of the shaft can snap off)
      However, I have fitted an 4bd1t to my 130 with a R380 that I rebuilt and so far it has been great.
      I had an idea it would be too weak, but it can tow a full size car trailer with a 110 on the back at 95km/hr with ease (1.2 transfer case)
      On my 4bd1t conversion I had the engine and front end of the transmission from the Isuzu so that meant I could keep the 12 inch clutch and engine adaptor, and fabricate a spacer between the R380 and the bell housing = pretty easy (and cheap)

      Britannica Restorations here in ilaly there are allot of iveco engines. And looking at the isuzu 4bd1t its the same as the iveco 8040.45
      The only thing that warries me is the fact that goes on red line on 3000rpm. So an 4 speed lt95 is not an option.Here there are some zf 6 speed manual gearbox that are peared with the 8040(3.9l) and 6 or 8 speed with 8060(5.9l).
      Maybe attaching the transfer box on the back of one of gearboxes would be an option.

      @onwheels8232 Před 6 lety

      Britannica Restorations another question. Did you have proablems with the weight of the isuzu bending or twisting the chassis?

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Před 6 lety +1

      No problems at all.
      Depending where you get the engine from, the starter is an issue - I saw people hack the frame to get it in, but all you need is a starter for a 4bd1t out of a forklift.
      You need stronger springs and longer bump stops and maybe pump the tyres up a bit more.
      Mike

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Před 6 lety

      I stuck a Disco 1 transfer case on the back of an R380 which was just a nut an bolt job
      No mods to gearbox mounts, prop-shafts, or gearbox tunnel = less work
      Gearing is good - I can just about pull away in second gear and top speed is about 110 km/hr
      Tows very well
      Land Rover should have made this standard fitment instead of that 2.5 TD
      (Total Disaster! Lol!)
      The 4bd1t lacks RPM, but makes up for it in torque
      Mike
