  • This is our 1 year review of our rebuilt transfer case LT230 and gearbox MT82 from Winchester Gears installed last year on our Land Rover Defender 110 Puma engine. Adding this to our LOF Clutches extreme output shaft and power spec clutch kit. Serious upgrade to increase durability and reliabilty of the transmission, especially for heavy loaded 4wd camper.

    To distinguish any possible oil leak coming out of the GB or the transfer case you can add Fluorescent Leak Detector Dye For all ENGINE OIL
    TRANSMISSION
    POWER STEERING
    FUEL SYSTEM
    *UV DYE*
    It works with the UV light so add to one of the parts and to find out use the UV light to see any possible leak
    If is not shiny fluorescent is the other part
    If is shiny is obviously where is coming out from
    Nice parts excellent choice 🍻👊🏽
    Sorry to hear about the bad experiences as well

    I bought an excellent Winchester transfer case and couldn't remove the old Speedo drive from my case. Tom was most helpful and once we identified the correct one he posted one out very promptly and free of charge. Top service.
    It is a lovely piece of kit and works a treat along with the LOF output shaft and clutch kit. I have Nigels diffs front and back and they are shear works of art and extremely solid. There is a noticeable weight difference between standand diff and Nigel's superior version. Though he is a busy chap so don't expect a quick turnaround but it's more than worth the wait.
    You are on the right path.
    Ashcroft half shafts and uprated CVS on mine and I am happy with them and I have bought parts from them before and they all worked well.

      Good to hear you also had good experience with Winchester Gears. We're also happy with the setup with LOF parts and do feel Nigel is the one we need to help us upgrade our diff.

    Can't fault the work Tom did for me on my gearbox and transfer box. Really well made and went to visit to drop them off and collect. A really nice experience.
    You also won't regret your decision to get Nigel to whisper to your diffs. Mine are amazing. Again went to drop them off and collect and had a good chat to decide exactly how they should be built.
    Love the videos. Look forward to seeing more adventures.

      Thanks! I think we do need to do a trip to the UK to meet Nigel, the diff whisperer (lol), and tour a little to meet Winchester Gears and LOF too and other nice Companies. How long you have Winchester Gears parts on?

      @davidwilkinson4382 Před rokem +1

      @@offtrackfamily I've had the Winchester and Nigel's diffs on since middle of lockdown. Can't fault them. They are behind an OM606 running reasonably high power. Just taken the gearbox out though as going 8 speed auto. Nothing wrong with gearbox but clutch is really heavy due to power.

    I have had an 2019 R380 Ashcroft gearbox and LT 230 transfer box for 50,000 miles (80k km +) and it's as good as new, no leaks, no issues. I am happy and will use the again. I also had as Ashcroft LT230 transfer box 20 years ago and went to Africa 5 times including a full trans Sahara off road trip and back - no issues apart from hot oil. Solution - a bigger transfer box sump. Otherwise - absolutely no probs and the car went on for 200k miles (300km) with it's next owner as a tree surgeons truck.

      @offtrackfamily  Před rokem

      Ashcroft parts are good and we might have not been very lucky on the assembly for the LT230. Great to hear and confirm it's possible to have no issues just like we did for more than 100k km

  • @johnharlow486
    @johnharlow486 Před rokem

    Ahh yes, the Lt230 leak. I just use it like Ariadne's thread so I can always find my Defender. Then its purpose is to mark its territory to warn the other 4x4s away. Shame its such a faff to top the oil up otherwise I would put up with it indefinitely. Though for the cost of an uprated gearbox I can afford to spend plenty of time grovelling about underneath her. Another benefit is that the handbrake housing flings the oil everywhere resulting in natural rustproofing.

    Great video as usual,
    But a little rough naming Ashcroft, when sounds like the leak could have been picked up with a preinstall check of the casing, but didn't name the "french craftsman" who completely butchered the job.....
    However, agree with your review of Winchester, im getting an LT230 built by them now, service and communication has been absolutely outstanding.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  Před rokem

      Ashcroft does make great parts but Winchester Gears' service in our case is way above. We also have a full Ashcroft HD transmission so we are customers of both companies and did experience it this way. French craftsman is so insignificant in the International Land Rover community that there's no reason any of our viewers would go to him. People who may be concerned already know and asked because of all the open drama he did on facebook exposing his way of treating customers. But i feel you want the name ;) MC Repairs in La Celle, France

    Having persuaded my daughter to get a Discovery 3 for her adventures and got her a great car, she still can't shake the Defender bug! Your car and set up is a great example of how to build a good expedition vehicle. So as and when I do get her a Defender I know where to start. One question I do have is about the clutch. What clutch do you have and has moving to a Winchester transmission helped make it more drivable?

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  Před rokem

      Lucky daughter ;) we have a powerspec LOF clutch. A Defender will stay a Defender so I don't think replacing parts will change its driving. We went for more durable and reliable parts regarding our heavy setup

    if that guy is a real as***le he bought it for back himself and the "friend" was just a cover up.
    But I can tell you: You are not alone. I have had a series of mechanics failing on my former truck with 10 episodes, charging work they didn´t do (2.500€) or making simple work complex and so failing.
    The positive thing: This cost me sooo much money that I had to either sell an unfinished project or learn myself.
    I choose the latter.

    Looking at your setup, I am wondering if you guys have issues with those wider tyres throwing mud all over the place, into the mirrors, roof top and even inside the cabin with open windows. As well, those wide tyres throw little stones chipping the paintwork.
    I suffer all those problems using 285´s on ET=0 wheels. I guess one solution is to fit aftermarket wider arches but I am not really keen on such a solution. Perhaps 265´s tires do not protrude outside the std wheel arches. I am quite sure 255/85R16 do not protrude the wheel arches but on full compression they may rub against the rear "tube".

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  Před rokem

      We do have mud & stones going all over with the mud tires, we honestly just close the windows and put aircon on ;) Paintwork isn't something we really care about as it's an offroader and it gets scratches all over when we drive through small forest tracks. We do have 285 K02 now on new alloy rims and they do stick out less, so we'll see if this makes a difference.

    In general I have had good experience with Ashcroft by getting spare parts. Very cooperative. I find rebuilding the LT230 is very simple. Dealing with a MT82 however, is a bit more complicated. During those hot summers you should use a thicker oil on the LT230, such as 75W-110 or so, even with the extra oil capacity sump you have installed. Are you planning to fit a rear locker? It is a peace of mind.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  Před rokem

      Ashcroft do have good parts and we might have been unlucky with their rebuild. Regarding oils for the moment we stick with Winchester Gears recommendations and for diff locker we might yes :)

    Holy truth. Everything flows and completely unnecessary. I made everything on cnc and pressed it on carbide rings. I've had it for about 2 years and still not a drop. That aluminum cannot withstand the heat and pressure for a long time without CNC treatment. Made in Czech Republic.👌😊

    Sadly the transmission is easily the worst bit of a Defender with the transfer case being the worst. Ashcroft seem to be getting a very mixed reputation where as Winchester seem to be very good.
    Such a shame LR spent zero effort in improving this fundamental aspect of the Defender - its all just too weak for off roading without the constant fear some thing serious is going to break and leave you stranded.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  Před rokem

      I agree regarding Ashcroft and Winchester Gears. We upgraded parts according to our use of it and we were never left stranded on the side of the road. Almost happened many times but were always able to fix to continue. Sometimes with help, sometimes without. Taking good care of it with regular maintenance, understanding the mods we do & why we do them, and having a good knowledge of the car helps a lot on that side.
