Thank you so much for this video. I have been researching how to pleach for a while. There isn't a lot of info out there and it definitely isn't very popular in America. I think this should change. It is a wonderful way of extending your gardens upward in a small space. I would have liked to see up close the tying and trimming process. Thank you so much for posting.

The Motivated Gardener Gardening channel I am in the same boat as Lisa. I’m trying to learn more as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m Canadian but living in the US. I would see pleached trees occasionally back home. As Lisa mentioned, it is less common in the US. Do you have any tree recommendations for US growing zone 9?

Excellent demonstration. I wonder if you have constructed a frame for a box headed shape. How would the cube be attached to tree?

Amazing! the only utube video I found for how to physically pleach a tree... I would like to pleach a portuguese laurel and wandered if you knew how to grow/train young so that I can get a strong and straight main lateral stem as I can't find any videos on utube on how to do this. Some of the portuguese laurels I need low level stems and some I would like high level.

Hi Bali The Portuguese Laurel is an excellent choice for this style of growth. The system for little & large is the same the only difference as you know is tue stem. Starting with a young tree / shrub type place down you bamboo and train the main stem up the bamboo cut out all other shoots or new growth just allow the centre to grow up tieing it to the stake/ bamboo as it goes. Once at the desired height start the process of lateral growth training side shoots as seen in the video allow 1 foot of growth and apply to the frame just being mindfull not to pull down to much. One of the main secrets is not to be afraid to try i hope that answers and im glad it was of some help to you. When I started do this no one had any interest but more and more people see the value of a hedge in the sky propped up on bare stems.

Hi Mandy thanks for your support regarding subscription. Lest see if we can get you on the right road...The trees height I am working on in the video the top of the pot where the soil is up to the bottom horizontal bamboo(bottom branch pleached) is 6 foot and 8 inches or 4 inches short of seven foot. Unless you would like a shorter pleached line up. Do allow your trees to grow and get stronger. I would strap a bamboo to the main stem and tie it in loosely but firm not to choke the stem and encourage a straight upward growth. I would also feed a chicken pellets (8 euro)and every ten days a liquid seaweed feed. You need a strong stem to hold a frame...The other way if you would like to speed things up is to place a 4inch by 3inch wooden stake into the ground two feet in ground concrete and 12 too 14 feet above ground have holes drilled starting 7 foot above ground level, next wire 12 inches or the desired height next hole for wire and so on..place your tree against wire as it develops pleach onto the wire no weight no frame....My last video last week at the start next to the climbing rose on my right hand side you will see the way I have cherry blossom pleached against wire to create a spring flower pleached display...if your on face book I can and will take photo and send to you....The timber takes the weight never a light young tree...I hope this helps and do come back if you have any questions. Thanks

Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a pleached tree for my small garden but they are so expensive.
In my local garden centre they are selling 2m height tree for a reasonable price and was thinking of using this method to create some privacy but not take to much space of the garden. I have 2 question 1 the middle post was that bamboo? And how thick was it I would assume the tree would need a lot of support due to the weight of the trellis. Also how do you find this type of training with the wind? Thanks in advance

  • @themotivatedgardenergarden7822

Hello Mandy thank you for your nice comment. You may begin to frame the branches now July I'm sure the branches are very pliable..Yes you also can remove the lower branches BUT in this case I would wait till the leaves and the tree part company in autumn..(the reason the more leaves the tree has the more photosynthetic possess will take place as the leaves act like solar panels giving the tree more energy which will be passed down to the root system for winter and also by cutting now the tree will lose sap sugar energy if you could wait 5 moths it would be better for the trees. if your happy with the height enjoy creating your living boundary. Don't forget to subscribe lol

Already subscribed. If I want the trees to grow taller before I pleach is there any tips to get to the height I want. Should I let them grow for an additional year before doing anything? Thank you for your advice.

Looking at pleaching a Tilia euchlora tree. Just taken delivery of 8 3year old trees that are about 7ft tall. Should I wait until the leaves fall before framing? Can I remove lower branches during the summer in preparation for pleaching later? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Love the video.

I've purchased several b&b carpinus "Frans Fontaine" with 1.75" caliper. I know it is a smaller, slow growing tree, but is it good for pleaching? If so, do you recommend pleaching them at this stage, prior to planting? Or should I allow time for them to settle in? Your video illustrates the ease of doing this before, but I'm wondering if the stem on my trees can support the frame. Thank you!

Hi Gina, Yes you can pleach away but don't go for a full frame just yet use light straight bamboo just to draw down the side branches into the desired position if you see the inner part of the branch starting to crack either move your bend outward or wrap hessian around it and slowly pull and leave. The support canes will be light and will stretch across both branches growing away from each other...Every thing worth while takes time and work looking at what you have thinking about what your looking to achieve and what it will take to get there lot of it is common sense every one van do this as it gets larger stronger increases the frame size 24 months and start to prune out what not required hope this helps if I have missed some thing let me know happy gardening Gina
