- A year after he brought a reconstituted First National Band to the Coach House, Michael Nesmith returned to the San Capistrano, Calif. venue with just pedal steel player Pete Finney to perform his classic 1972 album, And The Hits Just Keep On Comin’, and other songs from his countrified solo career. Here’s a great rendition of “Joanne,” one of my all-time favorites, with Nesmith in fine vocal form and Finney really shining.

Im going on 66 years old and was 10 to 12 years old when THe Monkees was on ! I think this song first came out in 1972 and I was about 16 then !
RIP, Mike. Thanks for being a part of the soundtrack of my youth.
I love how he dedicated this to Phyllis - "wherever you are baby".
Me too! lovely!

Phyllis! Love that he recognized her.
Thanks Michael Nesmith for writing and recording this beautiful song which is poetic. Your song indeed is a wonderful masterpiece because it will always live on.
The song keeps getting more bittersweet the older we get.
Thank You !
I was 7 years old when this song came out. It made me cry every time I heard it. It touched my little heart so. Even now as a 55 year old lady I still have those feelings. I heard it playing on the radio last year while I was in a shoe store and it stopped me right where I stood. I couldn't move and tears welled up in eyes. Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
My sentiments exactly! In two months I'll be 77 years old. There was a "Joanne" in my life long ago, we were both 21 and in love, we thought. Just like the song, she left me wondering what happened, and why. Don't know if she ever found what she was looking for in life.....I hope so. The song still brings back memories and the tears come to this old man's eyes.
Me too! Just turned 60 now. This song brought back such happy memories from my 7 y.o. life with this exceptionally beautiful song! Holding back tears now isn't even possible for this exceptional kind, talented, handsome man we've lost. Thank God for YT!!
Rest easy Nes, thanks for the memories!
Rest In Peace dear Michael. You are loved and missed 💚
Beautiful poetry
It is hard to pick a favorite all time song. Ah, but to pick your fav top ten, that is do-able. This is one of my top ten.
Thanks for posting. If I would have known, I would have gone.
R.I.P. dear Papa.....im very sad.
RIP
He can still hit the high notes. :-)
Did Mike ever explain who the inspiration for While I Cry' was?
Wasn't Joanne the name of his first wife? I seem to remember he was the only married Monkee at the very first. Then Davy married Linda and Mickey married Samantha. I don't remember who Peter married at first. Anyway, did Mike write this song for his first wife Joanne? I hope so. It's a lovely song.
Phyllis.
