    This video really helped my mental. I’ve been going through depression recently for the past year & a half because of over thinking. This video makes me feel that I have a chance. Thank you!

    I’m so glad you showed the breakdown of FAFSA and expenses! I’m planning around the same kind of situation as you and I’m hoping I’ll be offered a similar amount in financial aid. Most people don’t really talk about this in much detail so it’s been stressing me out! I’m moving across country from California to Maryland to start in the fall!

      Right?!!? I dont know why it’s so taboo… I feel like a lot more people would pursue medicine/dentistry if they knew about the financial aid. Thanks for the comment 😊

    Wait so you can take out up to $40k in loans for living expenses every year? That’s kind of a relief honestly

    • @jasmineahrar
      @jasmineahrar  Před 2 lety +11

      It was such a relief to me too! Dental school is so busy, money is the last thing I wanted to stress about. My totals have been anywhere from 32k-38k a year because each semester fluctuated a bit.

      I hate to tell you this but I am a dentist and have been one for the last 35 years when I graduated from dental school the total amount I owed was $23,000 you can’t borrow this much money dentists don’t make as much as you think they do. You are going to be a wage slave and go to work at one of these Wall Street chain offices they force you to over treat the patients and risk losing your license. This career does not make sense at this price believe me you were going to be sorry.

      It varies per school because the cost of living maximum is based on the location of the school and that cities cost of living on average for a 1 person unit and food etc. so certain parts of the country might be less!

    Getting in is easy, it is the getting out is the problem. That was what my director told us when we were at the orientation. I now know why. I owed $150k (25 years ago) for dental school. Open a new practice cost about 500- 600k depends on what you want. Buying a practice cost just as much if not more but you need to know how to run a practice. If you work for someone, you may or may not like where you are because of different philosophy. So, good luck, I hope your parents are rich :)

    • @jasmineahrar
      @jasmineahrar  Před 2 lety +1

      Congrats on making it to step 3! It probably depends on the school so I would just give your financial aid office a call and ask what the timeline looks like. We didnt find out how much we would take home for living expenses until the first semester’s tuition was paid during the first week that school started.

    What is your experience having a dog during school? Did you wait till your later years or did you get one when you moved there?

    • @jasmineahrar
      @jasmineahrar  Před 2 lety +2

      I got my dog in the fall of first year and I have loved having him. Many of my classmates actually brought their dogs with them as well. I think having a pet is sooo nice to come home to and I couldn’t imagine not having him. The beginning was a bit difficult because my dog wasn’t house trained so I had to make a lot of trips to and from school to make sure that I could potty train him and break the habit of him barking when I wasn’t home. So I think living really close to school is essential if you know you will have to go home to let your dog out at lunch time. A lot of students make it work! Hope this helps :)

    Can you work a part time job like 3 days a week 12 or 15 hours in dental school?

    • @jasmineahrar
      @jasmineahrar  Před 2 lety +2

      Definitely wouldn’t be able to do 3 days a week. Plan on being in school 8-5 from Monday through Friday, then you’ll need time on the evenings and weekends for studying, especially during D1 and D2. Plus for how much part time jobs pay, it probably wouldn’t be worth it. I think it would be really stressful and would make succeeding in dental school difficult, and trust me, you will need some down time each week.

    can FAFSA help international students wanting to study dentistry in US

    • @jasmineahrar
      @jasmineahrar  Před 2 lety +1

      As far as I know, international students do not qualify for federal aid. However, it's important to still complete the FAFSA because some colleges use it to see if you're eligible for aid from the school itself. You’ll have to check with the financial aid offices of the school’s you would like to apply to and see if they use the FAFSA for international students.
