      That was so incredible I was glued to my computer screen. Having been in a similar situation at one point though (literally having a gun pointed at my head) I kind of understand what he was going through. It's a surreal experience when you face your own mortality, but in my case I was being robbed and the guy would probably have killed me if I stood up to him. It was still the single scariest moment of my life and one that I've flashed back to many times in the 25 years since.

    I love how Rodney os like completely clueless about just how famous and popular he truly is. I think he has sort of an imposter syndrome. He doesn’t really truly grasp just how influ he has been for sooooo many people. Also look at just how excited he is any time they mention one of their friends for the first time. He’s more excited to talk to about anyone else but himself. Dude is a legend and a mystery. He understands the ideal to always leave them wanting more. Then he rides off in the sunset. Rodney's story about skating in the rain was incredible. I could hear how badly he wanted to make it about the skating - and not how good he is at the tricks.

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- Před rokem +9

      Hearing him describe skating in the rain and the way the water swirls off the board as the deck spins, I couldnt help but think that sounds like true "poetry in motion" a phrase often used to describe MJs playing style and its so fitting for the art of Rodney's skating too.
      and it had been awhile since i watch that 360 camera project that he did, but i remember there being elements of color swirls/blurs in it, that i didnt really like originally or understand why they choose to do it that way... but after hearing him talk about it, it gave me an entirely new love and appreciation for it and when he stated that the filmer's had decided to tell a new story through the project and that they showed him a sample and thats what really drew him into the project... I think that story/experience they attempted to convey is Rodney skating in the rain with the swirls/blur of color around him... or at least thats what i see upon watching it nowadays.

    Mullen is such a rare human, a one of a kind. I first saw him skate when Public Domain hit the skate shops on VHS. I was never a great skater and I gave up many years ago but individuals like Rodney have stayed with me throughout life and following his growth, his evolution not only as a skater but as a human has been a source of unspeakable inspiration in terms of overcoming external and internal challenge. There is a great spiritualism to his being that resonates with me deeply also, maybe because I am not that much younger and the experience of life itself instills, or really should do, an understanding of oneself within the cosmic context of All.

      It's such a shame, but you have to respect the way he feels about it.
      Rodney is arguably the best there is at what he does, but the pressure of living up to the legend that precedes him has got to be so stressful. As much as I want to see more of what he can do, I'd rather he get to enjoy skating his way.

    ‘79 Del Mar Hester Series. Folmer was skating the deep halfpipe, Wally was doing the orange and yellow tile backyard pool photo shoot, Gelfand (Hollywood , FL) flowed me a board/wheels and Olsen flipped me some 169’s. The keyhole was packed. I could not get a single practice run. The next moment everyone just migrates to the freestyle area to see Rodney skate. McGill (from NPR Florida) was there too. AG brings the Ollie, Rodney took the Ollie to every place he skated, Folmer (BocaRato) was Florida’s Brad Bowman. And then Rodney (one of my groms from Sensation Basin, (Gainesville, FL) blew freestyle and everyone’s mind. Add Mikey’s McTwist. Florida had a huge impact on skating. Add Kelly Slater… pretty impressive. Shout out to Basin locals!!!

    In 1977 my family moved from Anderson Indiana to Clearwater Florida. We had a skateboard park on Drew Street and US 19 called “ Clearwater Skateboard Park “. My younger brother Randy and I decided to enter the contest that was being held there. We thought for sure we had a chance because we had been skateboarding since 1973. We knew how it worked. We knew what to do. We knew that we were in the game. And then, Rodney Mullen happened. We were watching everyone warm up, and the only person that was warming up was Rodney. And I looked over at my brother and said to him, Randy,,,, there is no way we can compete with any of the skaters. Come to find out, everyone there couldn’t compete with this “ one “ skater. My brother Randy and I had walked up and seen Rodney Mullen warming up and decided that all the skaters were that good. We did not enter the contest the contest. This was my home park. My brand new home park and I couldn’t compete because everyone there was better than my brother and I. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. The day that this happened, that moment was captured in time. And I just recently found it here on CZcams. It’s amazing, someone filmed it. And you get to see it right now. How cool? How amazing the technology is today that someone took the technology of yesterday and entered it in today’s? This is the video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did because of a shock to find it online. I had no idea anyone filmed it. And those who did come up come up I’m more than sure they have thrown it away way before this video was produced. Enjoy, spread the news by sharing it. Because it is an amazing piece of Skateboard history. 🤙🏼 czcams.com/video/RQ0dlpZNtic/video.html at the same contest, Mike McGill got second place in the Half pipe competition, Alan “Ollie” Gelfand took first only after Mike took a really super hard fall trying to recover from a very sketchy invert. The bottom line here is, Mike should have taken first even after the fall. But history redeems him. LOL skateboarding history. You got a love it.

    Rodney: "because of you"
    Jason "you did the ollie indy air because Tony did the ollie indy air"
    Tony "I went and learned finger flips cause of him, and he learned air walks
    cause of me"
    Jason "Nooooooooooooooooooo Mate, Oh shit!!" lmao
    I would have had the same reaction and never knew how these 2 interacted. I'm an old School BMX rider and skater. I love this interview.,

    What a truly legendary bloke. Impossible not to well up a few tears listening this guy for long enough, so humble and so meaningful, and not just to the skating world.
