24-Hour Fast vs 16-Hour Fast

  • What's better for long-term weight loss. Fasting for 24 hours once or twice a week vs. fasting 16 hours every day.
    It's widespread to hit weight-loss plateaus when you're following a 16/8 Intermittent fasting schedule. Some people even start gaining weight. There are things you can do, however, to keep the weight coming off long term.
    In this video, Mike Cola will discuss how one of his clients initially lost about 18 lbs. fasting for 16 hours every day, but after about 10 weeks, she started gaining weight. As a result, he had to switch her to a 24-hour fasting schedule. Mike explains why his client initially lost weight, started gaining weight, and how switching her over to a 24-hour schedule helped her to start losing weight again.

    Excellent video, no surprise here. Mike your videos are amazing! I started with 16:8 in July. Now I routinely and effortlessly live on 16:8, but if I want to lose weight, OMAD is the fastest for me. I started my fasting journey on July 6th; my total weight loss is currently 35lbs.

    Did you recommend her doing 16/8 on the non 24-hour days or does she eat the regular three meals a day breakfast lunch dinner on those days that are not 24-hour fast

      Hi MoTown,
      At 1st she was eating three meals a day. I wanted to make sure she was taking in enough calories. For now on maintenance she's doing the 24 hour fast once a week and mixing in some 16/8 two meals a day.

    What about 24 hours fasting every single day with 1 hour window

      Hi Vicky, a 24 hour fast with a one hour eating window it's very similar to OMAD (one meal a day). I think that's a great short term or intermittent strategy. You have to be careful when aggressively restricting calories for an extended period of time...It can slow down your metabolism.

      Thank you for responding. I started off with omad then did 3 day water fast but gained weight the minute I ate. I’m looking to loose around 25 pounds but I don’t want to take long doing so.. What do you think about the just juice diet?

      @@vickycerioni I'm sure you will lose weight just juicing but it's hard to get enough protein. Juicing might be a good short-term strategy but long-term I recommend eating about .9 g of protein per pound of lean body weight. I would also do some resistance training. I know it's hard but try to slow down a little with your weight loss it will happen just be consistent.

    duh she's right you start eating regularly again it'll just make it harder why would you recommend her to go back to that!!! I agree that 2 meals a day for 5 or 6 days and then do one meal a day maybe twice a week works

      Hey Hank, I gave her a few options and she picked a 24 hour fast twice a week. It worked for her. But now she's doing more of what you're talking about to maintain her weight loss.

      Hi Sunshine, sounds good. I'm glad 18:6 is working. I would just recommend taking a diet break every five or six weeks if you're doing 18:6 every day. I know it's counterintuitive, but I think it'll help you consistently lose weight long term.
