In Tamil Nadu, the white ones are called Vetti/Veshti and the other types are called Lungi which is coloured and designed in stripes or checks. Also Lungi is stitched it's ends so it doesn't have any opening in between that exposes the leg as it happens with the Vetti.
In Andhra , The white ones are panche and coloured ones are lungi

In Kerala, the white one is Mundu and the dotted and striped colorful one is called Lungi.
In north India we wear dhoti with kurta
And special festival or function dhoti have golden stripes, when there is haldi sanskar, upanayana sanskar and satya narayan puja
And we call regular dhoti tehmand

Well, I always wear a Lungi while going to a local temple and during Tulsi Vivaaha ceremony I were a Dhoti. Once in every month, I go to the temple wearing a Lungi and just a janev thread on my upper body, just the way people used to dress up in Vedic times.

Dhoti ko Bengal, assam and orissa mai dhuti bolte hai aur Bengal mai toh ye bohot famous hai moyuri dhuti each and every events or occasion mai phente hai mostly puja mai🥰
My grandfather's is the only generation that wears dhoti as a day to day clothing. When everyone of that generation is dead...the coming generations most probably will never see people wearing dhoti. That's what scares me and upsets me a little.

In Assam we called it " Suriya" .
North karnataka ne bhi still in villages they wear regularly and even shadi me bhi dhoti he pehane hai aaj
South india uses two types for festivals and weddings they wear panche or dhoti but at home they wear lungi

In the South, we wear Veshti for formal or going to office or court.. And circular stitched Lungi for daily wear so that one doesnt feel draft in one ass as in dhoti !

Normally lungi is the coloured one..... And white coloured is dhoti......draping style differs
And one mistake is we keralite call white dhoti (not tucked in between legs )as mundu.... In tamil it is veshti.....

I feel for Indian men, knowledge of how to wear a Dhoti should be a basic life skill. Don't wear stitched dhotis. Learn to wrap a Dhoti. It's more comfortable. If we can put an effort to learn how to put a proper tie knot, why can't we learn Dhoti.
