  • Head out, enjoy the water and stay safe. Always wear your PFD and let others know where you're going. Remain within the limits of your equipment and skill set. For example don't try to paddle to Kangaroo Island on your brand new $200 Kayak 😂

Brilliant video Terry. I use a couple of those. I do find sometimes that the forecast is incorrect wind wise but I think that's because in some places like the Lower Coorong near Meningie the forecast is taken from Hindmarsh Island or the Fleurieu forecast is taken from Parawa. If in doubt we always err on the safe side.

Great video explaining how to read and check these forecasts.
Hadn't seen the Web cam but will definitely be using them to check before going out

Great, thanks for watching, I hope it helped. So many times I had been caught out when I first started out because I didn't understand how to read the weather apps.

Terry that’s fantastic info. Gives me a great idea of what to look at and what apps and sites to go to. Best of luck at Myponga.

Thanks mate and I'm glad the video helped. I didn't touch on wind direction as I would still head out myself anyway, but not on big swell or wind.

Mate, got ready lastnight to head out this morning. Woke up to some heavy rain decided not to go. By 11am the wind had died right off and the sun was out. Checked the Web cam at Seacliff, looked like light wind and swell. Drove there and started to unload, wind came up out of nowhere and it started to rain again. Packed up and came back home. 30 minutes later, wind died off and the sun was back out. đŸ˜©đŸ˜Ą

I know this is an older vid but found a few ideas very helpful (I live in Mount Barker so the ocean isn't close!). As others mentioned the only thing to double check is where the weather is being measured. Ours is taken from MtLofty 18km away according to Willy Weather... Wirrina's weather is taken from the forest well inland.... again according to Willy Weather. Definitely need to suss the surf life saving club cams. Swell Net also has subscription cams for all the main surf breaks đŸ‘đŸŒ

Hi mate, thanks for commenting. Its very frustrating when you plan a trip then the weather man gets it wrong. I've been caught out many times in some pretty bad conditions.

Nice one Terry. I didn’t realise there are 2 webcams at Seacliff, being able to see that flag will be very useful

Yeah, so many times the weather report has been off, so being able to see it live can definitely be helpful. I remember a few videos back when I was on the water and the swell was getting pretty bad the apps were still saying that it was smooth 😒

@@kayakfishingins.a4327 I couple of weeks ago I got up at 4am for a pre work fish because the wind was low and WillyWeather said something like .3 swell at 12 or 13seconds at Hallett Cove and when I got to the beach the waves were crashing in like crazy with huge swell. So frustrating! Sunday morning was nice before the rain came. A few whiting around

@@tabae69 Yep exactly what I'm talking about that should have been ultra flat conditions and it was the total opposite. With all the technology they still get it wrong sometimes.

Great video Terry! Learning to read the weather has been my biggest challenge so far, but I think I’m getting a good feel for it now. Living so close to the beach I’ve found myself looking at the weather daily and then heading down to see what the conditions are like to gauge what I should be looking for. The only thing I would add/question is wind direction, from what I’ve picked up the best thing to look for when looking to do some in shore fishing is an off shore wind direction as it will flatten the waves. I’m no expert, but is that something you look for as well?
Also, I hit myponga yesterday morning and at 7:15 (the gates got opened early, massive score!) there was basically no wind and it was amazing. Managed to pick up 8 reddies by 10:30! They were everywhere, first hookup was a minute into my session just trolling a diving hardbody heading to the bank opposite the launch. Good luck, tight lines!

Yeah mate, you're right about the wind direction and the waves. They didn't bother me so much especially when I had my Revo 13 as It would do a good job at cutting through the waves. What I didn't like was the big swells that I had been caught in a couple of times. Im off again to Myponga tomorrow to try my luck. Sounds like you had a really good time down there.

@@kayakfishingins.a4327 I definitely agree on the big swells, not a comfortable feeling in my books at all and the main reason I head out is to relax! Videos like this are a great help for newbies so that time isn’t wasted rocking up to rubbish conditions or even worse, ending up like old mates at the end of this video. I feel like every kayak should have a sticker saying “always check the weather before heading out” just like push bikes come with “wear your helmet”
