  • Today I am going to be discussing allergens in both rinse off and leave on products. You can download a copy of our own allergen calculator as mentioned in this video, by visiting our blog page here:
    www.sussexsoap.co.uk/blog
    The content within this video is all based on our own knowledge and understanding of what is required when scenting soap that you intend to then sell within the UK. Please do your own research as well. It is never a good idea to rely on just one source of information! I may have missed something out or even interpreted something incorrectly, so please, take this as a guide but read up on everything and research for yourself as well!
    Today we begin by discussing what the term "allergens" refers to in the cosmetics industry (within the UK and EU) and how to find out what allergens are present in your fragrance or essential oils. We then discuss whether a specific allergen has to be included on your ingredients label (it is all to do with at what level it is present in your recipe). We will then show you how we have created our own allergen calculator so you can create one too or, if you prefer, we will tell you how you can access our own allergen calculator to download and use yourself.
    We have tried to cover everything that we think it is useful to know when you are just starting out with a handmade soap and bath / body business but if there is anything else you would like to know, do pop a comment down below!
    If you enjoy our videos and soap making tutorials please do give us a like and subscribe :-)
    We will be uploading new soap making videos every Friday and new behind the scenes/business tips videos every Tuesday.

    Another wonderful helpful video, I love the fact you can do one for each soap you make to put into your PIF. I, like Wayne are not very good with maths, however I feel confident with how you explained everything. Thanks again.

    Thank you so much für your video. You have saved me so much money, as I am just starting and did not know about the Lilial. I could just in time recall the safety report, which is not a cheap thing, as you know. Now I have to replace the parfum oil of two planned soaps, but better now than in one years time. :)) - Also downloaded your calculator - Thanks a lot.

      Hello Christina. I am so happy to hear that we managed to save you some money and you were able to change your report. It is always annoying to have to change something, but like you say, better now than in a year. Good luck with your soaps :-)

    Started watching your video and its a huge help so thank you. As I am watching though I have a question on your amazing spreadsheet. How would I work out the % if I have blended my own fragrance oil using 3 different fragrance/essential oils? I know the amount of drops per fragrance/essential oil but not sure how you would use that information to get the correct % of each - not great with maths or spreadsheets for that matter so any help/advice much appreciated.

    great tool, but how to combine calculation if we use more than 1 essential oil/fragrance?

  • @staceyhebditch470
    @staceyhebditch470 Před 2 lety

    I discovered your videos today and they've been so helpful. Feel a bit overwhelmed though because there's so many things I hadn't even considered. I find knowing where to get essential oils (on a trusted website with the allergen document available freely on the supplier website) a bit difficult. I bought most of mine on the Bay House Aromatics website, but have just realised based on your video that only the certified organic ones have the allergen information on the 'Technical' tab, which makes me think that the non-organic ones won't be useful for me. Do you mind me asking where you get your essential oils? (I can go for the organic ones on Bay House) but wondering if you might know somewhere more locally (as I am based in Kent)

    • @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
      @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany  Před 2 lety

      Hi Stacey and thank you for your comment. You are correct that you definitely need to purchase from a company who will freely provide all the documentation such as COA documents and allergen documents for you. Many companies do have this available on their site to download but some do not. If the documents are not freely available to download then it is perfectly ok to email the company and ask for the documentation and as long as they respond and provide it to you then this is perfectly fine. It takes a little more effort to email and ask each time you purchase a new oil but as long as they provide it to you upon request then there should be no issues. We personally use Mystic Moments and The Soapery for our essential oils. Mystic Moments have all the documentation on their site available for immediate download but The Soapery do not. However, every time we have emailed The Soapery asking for documents they have provided them in a matter of hours and we have never had any problems getting the information from them. I can't comment on Bay House as we have never used themourselves, but if you are happy using them then I would definitely recommend emailing them and asking for the documents and I would hope that they would reply and forward them over to you.

    This is great! Thank you!
    What would happen if you use multiple ingredients in one product that contain the same allergen? How would you work out the total % contained in the product? I guess it would be e.g 0.1% from ingredient#1 plus 0.3% from ingredient#2 = 0.4% total, and you'd then use your formula contained in your spreadsheet?
    Thanks again!

    • @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
      @TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany  Před 3 lety +1

      Sadly not. Depending on who you go with, they may give you the formula to work out the allergens, but they won't provide anything like this or work out the allergens for you.
