Netflix's "Stranger Things" has seemingly taken over popular culture, in no small part thanks to its moody, synthesized soundtrack by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. In this video, Justin DeLay attempts to take us in to the Analog Upside-Down and show you how to approximate some of these fantastic sounds on analog synthesizers of the day.

01:27 - "Main Title" - K. Dixon / M. Stein
05:15 - "Kids" - K. Dixon / M. Stein

Netflix: Skip intro? Me: Hell no
CaptainCake that tasty tasty synthwave intro
I always skip it, never enjoy music and whole series either ;)
i always skip it i’ve seen the intro a million times already from all those times i’ve rewatched it and i just wanna see the show lol
Montażownia nr1 ?????
@@SPAZZOID100 What?
"DeLay" is a good last name for a guy who's into synths.
He was destined for this, clearly. :)
As was Aleph Oh, Ossie Later, Lopez and Lowen Filta, and C. Quenza.
Check out the channel 'Delay' with host Chuck Reverb and his backup guy Justin Case.
The drummer in my band is called Drummer with last name ;)
It’s almost not fair to the rest of us.
I am not a keyboardist in any right, I have never really had much interest in it at all. BUT....This video was absolutely amazing in showing the how the music was composed. Huge props to Reverb and the the folks who put this together. This is how you inspire people to become musicians!
That's awesome, thanks for sharing!
Caleb Suddreth or film score composers
You need to see Deadmau5 studio if you want be really amazed
Gabriel Santuario lol deadmou5 ! Yak
I totally agree with you. I'm a huge fan of the eighties and I love all these synth sounds. This guy was able to reproduce the original sounds from Survive with an extreme accuracy. Big up for Reverb.com !
Awesome video! Thanks!
If it's a synth related video on CZcams, you can guarentee Timecop will be in the comments xD
Haha, guilty as charged! :P
Looool, so fitting
i love you man or woman! * im not sure of your identity but i am sure of your sound.
Timecop, you rock!
I have a JUNO-106 and I'm so happy about it I have to write it in a comment here and tell everyone.
Yeah but the composers already said that they don't even own a Juno lol so wrong
Of course they don't have one. No one is willing to sell their Juno-106 to them.
I bought my juno a early 2011 and what a steal i got it for... it got so expensive during the next couple of years.. im keepin this bitch!!
@@rollipolioli Same here! I bought it (France) for 450€ in 2009! Man It's been sold for +1000€ now ! I'm keepin this bitch!!
@@merrittface Man 60$ for real?!! How lucky you got that day!!
*Music plays for 1/10 of a second
Damn it, now I have to go watch Stranger Things again.
Jasper Moore
Bonecrushing nostalgia.
Hell yeah... bro... lol....
Bapbo damn... i do that!
This main theme makes me feel a sad nostalgia, a little fear, expectation and a weird satisfaction from it all. I love it.
Kind of the opposite of how I feel when I watch the show.
Same, weird feeling.
This is straight up synthesizer porn.Proper gear man i love this
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

What I really loved about the Stranger Things soundtrack was how pure the synth sounds were... as evidenced by how easily you recreated the songs with simple settings on a Juno and Prophet-5. Just classic sounds that really did their job of evoking the 80s horror/adventure feel
hell yes, nothing can compare to that sound nothing! never ever has been a better combo then the 80s horrors and music ,its just like coke and pizza , u cant miss
coffee 7 Just listen to Synthwave
The whole soundtrack was done this way. Those guys have a room absolutely full of synthesizers, it looks like very little production/processing was done, it's pretty much raw. Pretty awesome.
Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein used analog and modular synths to compose the soundtracks to the show, so it gives it that true 80’s Sci-Fi/horror/adventure feel. I have always loved the soundtracks for the show.
Just watched Season 1 for the 4th time. The music is such an integral part of the show. It’s like perfect.
Great video and explanations. Amazing synths too. I just got a Juno 6 and love it, but that Prophet 5 is incredible. Maybe one day I'll have a spare 5k!
I had a track of mine used in Stranger Things. It's a jazz arrangement of " Deck the halls" and it plays for about 30 seconds on the shop tanoy in episode 2 whilst Winona Ryder is getting a replacement telephone. I love that show, so was pretty chuffed to have even a miniscule link to it.
That's awesome, Alex!
That's so awesome! How did u feel when you knew your song would have been in the show?
Dude. I was literally shaking in how much I wanted those synths. You can do exactly the same thing nowadays, but it’s not the same. Those synths have physical knobs that you’re turning. You can get much more connected to the music. They are beautiful pieces of equipment. They could be art in themselves.
They gave an interview explaining what they used. The arpeggio was hand-played on an Oberheim 2-voice. The bass is a Roland SH-2, the pads are a Prophet 5. 👍
Prophet 5 does amazing pads. It's the king of that type of thing imo
So glad the "Kids" track is covered in this video, It's deff my 2nd favorite outta the whole soundtrack behind the title theme.
and the prices on ebay rise...
A DX100 is also a good alternative to the DX7
***** I own a DX-7 since 1991 ;-)
A Korg Volca FM does the job.
Korg Volca FM does a great job pretending to be a dx7
The Volca FM has an arpeggiator/chorus/step sequencer and the ability to automate though, the only limitations I find it has are the three voices and the inability to have velocity go in via a controller (fixed with a special cable by retrokits). It actually sounds identical to the DX7 with a little bit of tweaking for each preset too, so I honestly don't see how other than the voices the DX7 is superior. The pricing on it makes it a serious piece of kit too.
Finally. someone that explains things well, is well spoken and really knows their shit without coming off like a synth snob. Just enjoyable to watch. I subbed because of the tone of the video and how thorough he was, not to mention the awesome detailed description below the video. Bravo man.
I might not live up to his greatness but maybe you also find some of my videos interesting :D czcams.com/video/F7eO9ygr7BE/video.html
I love how you are so passionate and appreciate the beauty of these synth sounds! It really shows through.
So cool you mentioned Tangerine Dream's Sorcerer - that was a real gateway soundtrack for me into electronic music!
Likewise!
Right?
OMG, I used to have a tape with some cool electronic music for some 30 years, and just recently I learned that it's Tangerine Dream:)
There is a bit of "Phaedra" in Stranger Things when the cop finds his caravan is bugged.
Can't tell you how many times I've watched (or at least begun to watch and never quite got past few mins) videos deconstructing a songs or artist sound and it's been far from close or useful. This was a rarity, really nailed it and the presentation of the workflow and fundamentals were top notch. Great job Reverb\Justin. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! This started my obsession for vintage synths and reverb is where I go to get them, crazy fascinating
Such a badass intro to such a badass show.
This video is spectacular. Props to Reverb and Justin for walking us through synth music production techniques..
missed the opportunity to say "Props to Reverb and Delay"
This video was indeed awesome! Not only you got to the very depth of how the soundtrack was created, you actually made me relive the experience of the movie! I start to think that music was the most considerable part (if not the crucial one) to create that feel the series had. Thank you very much!
I never watched a single episode of Stranger Things, but this was really interesting. This guy knew what he was doing.
.....WHY!??? WHY HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE GREATEST SHOW CREATED!? DO YOU HATE YOURSELF!? WATCH IT NOW!!!!!!!
awesomedude345621 haha it's on my waiting list now don't worry
You come right back here and tell us what you think of it
Rhapsody in noise Im telling you right now, YOU ARE MISSING OUT BUDDY
Did you watch it now?
Ive only heard about the show and haven't gotten to watching it. Now after hearing the music I want to go watch
Please do, you won't be disappointed I promise
could be a hiLite 4U! :-)
This is the best thing that Reverb has done yet.
this was truly one of the better videos I've seen on synthesis in a while. thank you so much
These are the kinds of videos I am always looking for on CZcams. Unexpectedly great! Thank you.
"C major with an added uh B on top of it"
or just a...
or just a C major7?
lmao
that's what happens when you fail your theory exam
@@translila He could've been putting things in terms for a general audience. Maybe he knows what a C maj7 is but doesn't want to use musical terminology.
😧
Also is it just me or did he play it really awkwardly? I feel like it would have been a thousand times simpler to just play C major7 in the left hand and the top C with right hand instead of crossing them for no reason.
Such a clear and eloquent "how-to" video on the classic sounds. My first reverb video, too. Thanks for this.
We're so glad you dug it, hope you stick around on our channel, thanks for watching :)
subbed, hope to see more like this!
Man Reverb is on it! I just watched the series and really wondered about the instruments of the soundtrack.
Watching this got me really into analogue synths. I then found the video Justin did as well on the Korg Monologue and, well, now I own one! Thanks for the influence, Justin!
Nice breakdown on analog synthesis and how it's being used in the soundtrack.
Super informative. I’d love to see more in this series!
I love the second track in this video. I remember watching the series and being amazingly impressed by that track in particular. It went exactly where I expected and wanted it to!
Amazing video! I was totally drawn into your story telling ang the sounds and the music. A whole new world opening up for me diving into sound synthesis.
Amazing. I haven't even watched the series yet but this is just captivating. Probably gonna start watching it tonight. Earned a sub too. Cheers!
If you liked this - you're going to love the series! Thanks for watching :)
im guessing if u started the night of this comment, you have already watched all episodes and are obsessed...
Took me 3 nights to finish it and I consider myself moderated :D
Amazing series, now on the wait for season 2!
hahaha lol, (ivvg). ima exactly the same. Im watching it next time im at me mothers.
I watched all the chapters one after another and finished it in one night
Okay so I'm a techno producer and super nerdy on sounds. I actually cried while listening to these synth sounds, absolutely beautiful.
Very awesome video! I've had my Juno 106 and 6 packed away for some time, looking forward to setting things up again and smelling them after playing choon's for several hours!
Very inspiring video! Fell in love with those Juno sounds and got myself the TAL-U-NO-LX plugin just for that sound!
this video is incredibly interesting. i hope the view count grows exponentially. well deserved if it does.
Thank you!
It's all about the sound, great job, Reverb my favorite GAS place.
Glued to the screen for 15 minutes. That was awesome. Full-on nostalgia waves for me once those synths started communicating emotions. Seen the video a dozen times by now, but the point in the Castle Byers part where the Moog is booming and the Juno comes in with the shimmering pad still gives me goosebumps.
Explained really clearly, I like it. Fantastic Synths of their time. Love the warmth of the Analogue sound
Very instructive video for a new player of synth ! Thanks :)
Amazing stuff. Came here just expecting a discussion vid and this blew my head off
Awesome!!! Thanks for making this video. "Kids" grabbed me from the moment I heard it watching the show.
Amazing! I watched Stranger Things and loved the music, since I´m a 80´s synth fan, so awesome how you show step by step how to make the same sounds from the tv series!
This is incredible!! Very informative! Make me want to get into music.
Nice tip on the ext input hack! Cheers!
Brilliant dude. Just brilliant. Thanks for the work you put into this!
i fell in love with Synthesizers the day i discovered Depeche Mode and Enigma back in the later eighties. As a teenager, i was so awed by all the cool sounds that it could create that’s only limited by your level of expression and know how. Unfortunately, my mom gave my brother the piano lessons and there was almost no way i could afford even the cheapest synth unless i skipped school to serve burgers and fries. Well, the electric guitar was much more accessible and heavy metal seduced me and won! This is so cool, thanks for sharing!
Great, great video. I'm jelly of this guy's studio.
Great video and wonderful machines :)
This is awesome! I really loved the music in this show, and this video does a great job!
I just want to say, that i am a big fan of reverb and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the content you have been creating lately! well done all around!
yea same her soundcloud.com/kaamilmirza/cached
goddammit this makes me wanna buy a synth
Just download Tal U No Lx
Sure but if you have an iOS device you can get pretty darn close with Garageband Alchemy. And if you really get into it there are a whole bunch of synth addicts who can help you out on the audiobus forums.
Institute Synths aren't for sale, Synth Retention does everything they can to keep all synths in house.....lolz
fprintf no
buy a cheap Worlde synth and hook it up to Cubase
"A C major chord with a B on top"
Hmm.. _I wonder if there is a name for that..._
Kromium *jazz intensifies*
Kromium he should’ve said a Cmaj7 with the octave
@@prod.sardoniiq6942 yeah ikr
@@JDee-bp1pz you're the one who needs to chill. Look at you getting all triggered at me just pointing out that they could have easily explained that a c major chord with a b on top was called a Major 7th chord. Since this video is purposefully explaining the music within Stranger Things, there is not really a reason for the guy to oversimplify it when it can easily be taught to viewers.
In step edit programming we don't use voicing nomenclature as we do with traditional notation, the arpeggio sequence top note could have easily been any other note hence "B on top is correct for a top-down 10 step arpeggio sequence.
Tremendous video. Loved the series and this added to it as well! Thanks!
I loved watching this! Very cool. There is one thing I wish more people would do when it comes to showing production techniques, panning. I love the effective use of panning and would enjoy seeing where people places doubles, lead lines and additional sounds in the left-right sonic spectrum.
I have no Idea about how to play music but this shit was KickASS! Interesting without a doubt, keep it up!
that prophet 5 sounds so organic and beautiful
richard harrow doesn't it just. This is my argument to people who say VSTs sound just the same as original equipment. They don't.
@@triptechable
other than the imperfection in the hardware, they sound the same.
@@captainvoluntaryistthestat3207 they dont. human input is much of what also makes it sound analog, software is 99% of the time quantized and programmed to play midis
@@edhardy7210 WTF does quantization or midi have to do with software synthesis? You're not forced to quantize or use preprogrammed midi
@@theeltea When you are recording analog synths, the curve you increase the filter at isn't linear, the notes arent played perfectly in time. Most producers using software click in notes on a grid and experiment way less because the knobs arent in front of them, I think this contributes to the 'analog sound'
Hey man, your equipment is awesome. I love the way you describe the sounds using your hands. I'm a kinesthetic learner so to see a description of the sounds is fantastic. Normally it would take me a while to hear the subtle changes but your hand movements let m know what I'm listening for. Love it
This was a really really nicely made video. Thank you so much.
Reverb has made such an interesting channel, I hope it gets bigger
Such a good video thank you, legends
is this good music
soundcloud.com/kaamilmirza/cached
Awesome dude, thank you for putting this together.
You're good at explaining this stuff, thanks Justin.
So you need about 7 grand to make these sounds... WORTH IT!
more than that. lol. im seeing closer to 20k+ in CAD at least
+FraggingBard you wont have that analog warmth that you get by stacking analog synthesizers and outboard gear.
then when your done making the sounds, you can just toss all that gear because youll probably never use it again and has no resale value. psych!
+hvmnwvrm it most certainly has resale value. Infact, it hardly depreciates. In fact again, it appreciates.
Sean its not a debate, its a fact.
Alright, you need to break down more songs!! This was great.
Literally loved every second of this video. Was just curious about how this music was made cuz i love it so freaking much and i stumbled upon your video. This was AMAZING. I love finding youtube channels like these. New Subscriber gained!

I really liked the way you explained all of this, thanks.
Thank you so damn much for this and the project package in Ableton. I've been stuck in basic bitch solo patterns and needed a way to try to branch out and get more layers and tracks in my stuff. The package really helps to know what the hell I need to do. Thanks
We're glad you like it!
In a recent Vanity Fair video the composers of stranger things point out that the theme song was not made on a Juno or with an arpeggio (The one who made it doesn't even own a Juno). It was made on a Oberheim
Loved watching the video! Thank you so much!
The more i see your videos wth the prophet 5 and the Juno 6 the more i do love my Roland Juno 60 and my Prophet 5. When i bought those two analog synthesizer and others for some years ago the digital synthesizers where in. Everybody sold theire analog stof for buying the digital synthesizers.
Today the digital stuf is less in and the analog synthesizers are back. I love it!!!!!!! Now almost everybody wants the old analog synthesizers.
Full credit to the guys who made the music, as soon as I heard the opening theme I was sold regardless of how good the show actually was!!
This is honestly the best tv soundtrack and I think others will agree. This is the first soundtrack I've listened to on loop
Check out Disasterpeace's soundtrack for It Follows!
Al M Very good too
Doesn’t beat Twin Peaks but still very cool.
Thanks for the lesson. Can't say I've ever been able to sit through a whole synth video, ever. You had my complete attention. \m/
Its great to see and hear how that amazing soundtrack came together. Awesome video right here.
The actual synth for the intro sound was an Oberheim SEM. Check out the interview with the actual composers
Oh man, I love Mass Effect!
Have you seen Blade Runner? ;)
every time i hear the stranger things opening/ost i always think of mass effect lol glad ppl relate
+YellowStryper ?ok
I just bought a synth and I am soooooo excited to try this
This is a fantastic video! I’m glad I found it.
Prophet 5 for sure. That thing was amazing on Creepshow
That "Kids" main melody on the Prophet 5 is very Kraftwerk Computer Love sounding.
Awsome!! LOVE this sound. It's fantastic sick synth!
It's a luxury to have you guys produce these videos, thank you!
I would like a video like this but for the Mr Robot soundtrack.
and a video for the Knick soundtrack... RIP :(
Different Strokes, also has some cutting-edge theme music.
Tony White the Knick was by Cliff Martinez and he mostly uses Omnisphere software so that's a good start.
did mark ruffalo and tom hardy have a love child?
One of the best youtube vids I have seen! Very informative, thank you
Great video as always, keep it up guys!
Well I'm meant to be doing an assignment for uni, but this feels more important right now...
Damn you have some beautiful toys right there :')
well I used similar stuff and made this

I've loved these types of sounds for years, but finally watching Stranger Things tipped me over the edge. I totally want to mess with this kind of equipment. Unfortunately, my technical know-how and wallet are both pretty pathetic, so I'm pretty hopeless. Perhaps one day! Excellent video! It's so inspiring
Beautiful and well explained. Thanks.
reverb does such a great job of providing content that makes me want to go to the site even when i am not looking to buy gear and then since i am on the site, i end up buying gear. it is terribly effective but terrible for me and my wallet.
What was innovative about the Junos wasn't polyphony, there were already many in the market. The Junos brought polyphony at an affordable price for the first time, the other polys were super expensive.
Well said, thanks!
Don't forget the Korg Polysix!
Isn't it just a crazy fact in retrospect that a feature as simple as polyphony used to be prohibitively expensive?
You had polyphony much earlier on String synthesizers, still I don't think these instruments were as cheap either.
The first polyphonic synth, the Polymoog was $8,000
This was an eye opener. Thanks for sharing, it was so cool!
Incredible ! Your video blow my mind, you explained so well, keep going fantastics video like this one :) !
