((**Quick note on the roller!** Forgot to put this in but obviously let the clay dry 24hrs before applying the varnish.))
Hey guys, first off the Wizard Tower finale' is on its way! In this video I show you how I made my own stone wall texture roller for making the stone on the wizard tower/castle buildings. It's a very simple and easy method that gave me better than expected results that look just as good, if not much better than what I've seen out there for texture rollers on the market.

Let me know if you like these type of videos and want to see more of them in between the major build videos I will continue to focus on with the channel. If so, suggest away a topic you may like me to cover in the future.
Real Terrain Hobbies This was awesome! If you're planning to make more texture rollers with more designs (especially cobblestone), I'd definitely like to see that!
This is GREAT!!! I always in difficult on finding texture roller in indonesia but always find DAS clay in my bookstore.this is really helpfull.its easy and the material is easily bought.thanks
Derek Roe
Cobblestone sounds like a great idea, think I'll give that one a go!

Awesome, glad to hear.:)
Very good idea mate, give us more :p i'm looking forward: Keep up the very good work
speaking for all metric users thank you for converting
MrKittke especially as only 3 countries Don’t use metric
I gave it up lol. Our system is unnecessarily annoying, and the metric system just makes more sense and is MUCH easier when scaling and engineering.
Tutorial starts at 6:20
Thank you everybody that make these videos. Definitely helps us beginners a lot. Love scratch build stuff. Pure art
I appreciate your contribution to the craft and always look forward to seeing new offerings from you. Thank you! Now off to go make one of these :)
Thanks Aaron. Glad to hear these are able to help you out. Good luck on your roller! Takes a bit of patience with the stones, but worth it once you have your finished too all said and done.
I like it. Texture roller works great.
Looking forward to the rest of the Wizard Tower build and would really love to see the Inn & Tavern build when it's completed.
Tips and tricks vids in between are most welcome.
Great content.
Awesome, glad to hear it. Yeah I'm trying to get the tower out ASAP then finish up the Tavern. I''ll keep out with these tips and tricks as well. They dont take away too much time from the bigger builds, which is perfect.
Absolutely fantastic. I find your vids very inspiring, thank you for posting.

"Yes? Oh omnipresent authority figure?" ;)
Great one man. This is genius... I've never thought of this trick.
Daym😳 I never would have guess that was how you made the roller, thank you so much this was very helpful. I can’t get over the fact the ACTUALLY PEBBLES were used... just amazing
thanks so much for this video, ive been trying to find a cobble stone roler, and now I can make it myself..thanks so much for your advise and great videos.
Awesome, glad to hear. :)
Thank you! You are scarily talented....and you make it look deceptively easy! A very grateful subscriber.
Thanks Lise! Glad to have you on board.😊
Probably the best idea I've ever discovered thank you.
I was about to order a few rollers
Best tip yet. Also never thought of gluing clay
Perfect! Yeah it glues really well. The roller is solid.
Thanks for this video - the home made roller is a great idea. I'll definitely be giving this a go!
Awesome, hope it goes well!
So I went down to CZcams rabbit hole looking to find a way to make realistic rock texture for a light-up lighthouse clay/jute mixed media sculpture I'm making for Mother's Day and lo and behold I find your amazing video, you are a freaking genius dude! I can't thank you enough, I'm so stoked now to do this!
Super epic. Just had this idea the other day, but wasnt sure it would work. So glad I found your stuff!
I am so excited to make one of these this weekend. Thank you 😊
I love diy tools! Excellent tips! Thanks 😊 I will make one of these rollers!
As always very well made video and very informative. Thank you!
Thanks Robert. :)
This was great. My kind of DIY. Loved it after I got to 1:54. I'm glad I stayed.
Gracias por compartir voy a hacer la moldura. Sus trabajos son hermosos Felicitaciones.
Thank you for sharing this genious idea
Wow thank you! I’m making that roller today!
Very cool idea.Very creative! thank you for you work! Greetings from Germany!
Love the Baldurs Gate soundtrack!!
This video is great, your channel in general, thank you
Nice one, Neil. I really like the effect...thanks for the demo - need to make a few texture rollers!
Thanks Heather! They're great! Thing I might go with a seamless patterned cobble stone next.
@@RealTerrainHobbies I love that idea - show us how!
Clever, realisitc and superb, have to try it on my 15mm terrain, thanks!
Thanks man! Definitely give it a go just using smaller stones.
awsome video, very cool rolling pin you made there. I found that (for me personally) it was easier putting the clay directly on my foamboard pieces 1st and then going over with the textured roller. After that i cut away the clay at the edges.. But again, my personal prefrence. But it would not be possible at all if it wasn't for your great tutorial on how to make it, so thanks alot mate, really!
Awesome. Yeah I did do a little of that on my tower build. I found pressing it down firm enough was an issue though when tring to go that rout so I mostly just ended up rolling it out first and then putting it on. If you got it to work well that way for you though then that's all that matters! :)
Well this is just genius! Here I am waiting for moulds to come in the mail. Damn it!
I have only played D&D once and I don't make models or anything, but I think the stuff you do is so cool!
sweet, i think this technique can be use to make a wall roll in 1/35 scale too, just need some brick/wall base as mold to press on the clay fist
Very interesting! Will have to give making my own rollers a try.
Excellent! Takes a bit of patience to make them with all the rock impressions, but they're a great tool to have once you've made em!
Tutorial on how to make the roller actually stats at 6:13
Thanks bro
Hi, I am thinking doing one texture roller for dungeon walls and a medieval castle that ask me my child. Thanks a lot for this tutorial!
Thanks for the idea!
Cool video, I'm a step before beginner haha, just learning as much as I can before attempting anything.. thanks for the information
Nice job thx 4 showing how you made it
super awesome, good skill. great handwork.
Very well done, great video
I love this channel so much.
Thank you now i can make this to my own.. More fast and easy to my diorama.. Thank you for sharing....
Thanks, and good luck with your diorama :)
Thank you Sir for sharing your great talent
This looks a lot easier than dremelling a pvc pipe. I'm definitely going to give this a go
really creative , wow😌🤩
Thumbs up for the texture roller, I've been thinking about how to make one for some time. I only wish I could thumbs up again for Baldurs Gate music... 😊
Haha, thanks man. Yea, gotta love the Baldur's Gate music. :)
Love this
Me like it! Kudos!
Excellent!!!!!
This is sick! Thanks! :D
Nice one! 👍
Thank you for the video.
uu. love the baldur's gate music.
You're talent is glorious
excellent work
Thank you so much for this.
This is so cool and helpfull chanel , thank you sir!!!
Ummmm I LLLLLOOOOVVVVEEEEE this roller, I love the look of this kind of brick or w.e and use it allot...I would do it all by hand it is such a time eater. Will be making one tomorrow!!
Very cool!
This would make for some really nice Oldhammer terrain for gaming and display of those old beloved miniature armies from days long past.
Thank you for sharing. So far the best homemade texture roll i ve seen on CZcams, and I ve been checking quite a few. I like the result very much. Somebody else didn't like them, well you can always use some tools to get your desired result. May i ask what glue you have used for adhering the clay to the bottle? Thanks.
Pretty clever!
Been working with foam (works the same way with a roller) but I’m about to order so of this clay it looks soo much easier to use
I used XPS foam for years until I tried air dry clay, I haven't used foam since! Chavant clay is even better to work with 👌
I'm going to try to make this with my homemade clay to see if it works.
Always good to see your vids up, cant wait to see that wizard tower all finished up.
Any hints on any future projects you're thinking about starting?
hmm... hints, hints... We'll go with "snow" for now. Looking forward to doing some higher quality stuff and trying to flesh out some realistic snowy winter terrain. I was inspired to do snow after seeing this amazing job done on this Tabletop World building and hopefully replicate the amazing attention to detail done by this individual: tabletop-world.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/aFront-neu.jpg
Can't wait to see it; I'm a war gamer and have been toying with the idea of making a snow themed table, something like a gulag or work prison, with snow drifts, frozen creeks and lake, things like that
Haha this is intelligent and cute idea bro ❤️
Is there a difference between the orange clay and the white one?
OMG THANK U SO MUCH.
رائع😍 احسنت العمل 👏
انا من العراق🇮🇶
Amazing!
Thanks! :)
Hi, this is really smart indeed. Creating your own tools according to your need.
- You said "make sure the clay dries and hardens 24 hrs before spraying with varnish". Is it drying by itself or do you bake it at low temperature to help the drying process ?
- Why using Varnish prime ?
You are mastering the topic !
Спасибо! Интересно, доступно, понятно!
Love the music
Very interesting. I originally thought the clay was to become a mold for resin or plastic. I was pleasantly surprised when the obviously dried and hardened clay became the tool. One question, at the very end you cut out a very large portion of the tower, why? Curious minds want to know. Thanks for another great tutorial.
Ah yes I forgot to actually mention to make sure the clay dries and hardens 24 hrs before spraying with varnish. But yea, works great! As for the tower, I cut out that portion so you'll be able to get a look inside the tower once things all said and done. I'm going to be using some vines and brambles afterward to hopefully his the seam around the edges. Going to do what I can anyway to hid the seam for a "seamless" look.
Thx 👍
What is the difference between the 2 air dry clays? Do you let the first one dry on the roller before you spray it? What did you use to glue it to the roller.
What did you glue the clay onto the bottle with? It would be helpful in future to have some text come up on screen for those kinds of things. :)
I wanted to ask that too!
From a reply to a previous comment, he used PL Premium. Liquid Nails-or a similar product- will work just as well. There's an Amazon link in the description for Liquid Nails
Well done. One suggestion: maybe lower the volume of the music while you’re talking or do away with background music during speech altogether.
sounds good. I asked my wife if it was too loud before uploading. She said it was fine... she lied...😣😋
Real Terrain Hobbies - She didn’t lie. I could hear you, but I find constant background music distracting. I’m an avid documentary viewer and of late everyone has gone music crazy. Don’t get me wrong. Music has its place, but it can go overboard. Music to indicate the start, transitions, reveals, endings, etc. are a few examples of good music placement. Also during the nonverbal moments such as this video warrant the use of music. Believe me if I had a way to tell all documentarians this I would. You’re doing great. I’m glad you’ve found a way to distribute more content. I really like the idea of showing your techniques that will be seen in the major building videos. Super clever and I’m sure appreciated greatly by your learning viewers. I like it personally because I like learning what goes into making such beautiful and realistic creations. Explaining the techniques prior to the major construction videos will save you some work during the making of them and provides focused and detailed instruction/information. Win win all around. 😉
Thanks Paula, that was very well thought out and informative. I will definitely be taking all of that into good consideration. Super constructive and I love that. Great food for though so thanks for taking the time to let me know your opinion. Comments like these only help to improve the channel and future videos so very much appreciated!🙂
Real Terrain Hobbies - I had a feeling you were the type to not be offended. You’re most welcome!
And maybe fix the squeaky table while you at it :D
Freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!! thanks so much for posting this. Just joined your channel.. looking forward to checking out your videos.
Thanks man, happy to have you on board! :)
Bravo😍
I am making stuffed peppers as I watch this. So kool
That was awesome.. new to the channel..have a lot to catch up on but wow!. What an awesome tip.. so much easier than fooling with foam. I know it has its place but this way has some serious possibilities.. love what your doing budro.. quick question. I might have missed it but just to confirm, you let the clay dry before you sealed it with the varnish??
Sorry for the ate response but yes I definitely give the clay a good 24 hours dry time first.
Dude, that baldurs gate theme in the background got me like "wtf am I Young again?!?!?!"
Alright, you've convinced me. I tried 3D printing a roller with less than satisfactory results. I guess I'll just have to make one the old fashioned way.
Too bad the 3d print didn't work out for ya but this method definitely gives some great results!
Baldur's Gate soundtrack
Ya man.😎
Subscribed! :)
I knew I recognized that music.
Great vid! just one question.. what type of glue did you use to stick the clay to the plastic bottle ?
I used PL Premium. I put a link in the description but it is called "Liquid Nails." Pretty much the exact same thing. They don't have PL Premium on amazon for whatever reason but the Liquid Nails glue will bind to both the plastic and clay just the same. This is the link here: amzn.to/2URPy1T
Great video....just one question, what are the two types of glue you are using 1st for the roller and 2nd for the tower. Love watching your videos
Thanks!🙂. For the tower I used PL Premium, or its also called liquid nails, no nails etc. The tower I just used PVA or wood glue.
Just a small idea I had:
Fill a tub full of small stones, fix the clay on the roll and just roll it in the tub.
That might save a lot of time!
could work. Not sure how even that would turn out but you could give it a try!
Baldurs Gate Music!!! Great! :D
LOVE the concept...Please tell us what did you put on the roller at 7 min 54 sec to adhere the cover on to the roller...it looked like peanut butter...how long did you let the roller harden up before applying the varnish
Nice! Those bricks look realer than your workstation background!! lol
lol hey dont diss the faux brick! It's better than what was there before! XD
Any idea on how this type of roller works on XPS foam? That’s my preferred medium, and I would love to have a roller for it.
UNA BUENA IDEA MAGNIFICO LO ARE YO MUY BIEN UN SALUDO DESDE ESPAÑA ANIMO
So im just starting with modeling , therefor two maybe beginners questions
Both clays you use, for the roll and then for the tower, i assume harden out afterwards so that the cobble texture stays in shape?
Do you think this is also suitable to make a cobblestone road for my christmas village i am building?
Thx for any tipps!
Хорошая идея. Лайк!
Спасибо! :)
Subs from Indonesia 👍
This is great, thanks for showing and sharing, I'll be trying this soon enough out of interest what's the glue you used to stick the roller mould to the plastic tube you used? Great stuff, keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! Glad you found it useful. The glue is a construction adhesive called PL Premium. It won't be breaking off any time soon, or ever. ;)
@@RealTerrainHobbies great, thanks. I've just made a roller about 10 mins ago, I'll leave to dry tomorrow and hit it with the sealant as you've shown. Life changing I hope !!
Baldur’s Gate theme is such a nice touch
I model in N Scale for my model railroad. Making the clay roller impressions 'one stone' at a time wasn't possible. The stones were just TOO big. So I cut a piece of 1/16" thick basswood 1.5" diameter circle. Then filled the surface with small stones. About 50 of them. I added CA glue to lock them in place. Now I had a round stamp and I could do 50 small impressions at a time and stay in scale. My roller measures 1 inch diameter and 2.5" wide. Great for cobblestone road or walls.
You were great in OZ.
