To be fair Madden 2004 was one of the best Maddens out there, and is light years ahead of anything EA is releasing now. Had no idea it was a GOTY winner though.
Yeah there's no way he'd understand how culturally important that game is
@@senor8314 Only to a few, it’s kind of like giving Fifa a game of year award. When there a ton of people in US who prefer football to soccer. And even that makes more sense considering it’s the worlds sport.
@@navis462 That’s a terrible argument
@@rajchow1 Wow a 4 letter response, I’m Impressed. I’m not sure what the criteria is, but if the game of year award is also observed in Europe or pretty much all encompassing region wise, with that context I don’t understand how Madden beat, KOTR, Zelda wind waker, GTA vice city and even Pokémon ruby and sapphire. But please feel free to give your argument, since you are so qualified to say what is a good or terrible argument is.
@@navis462 First of all, Spike is an American based company and the game awards were tailored for Americans.
It’s not just “it’s like giving it to fifa LOL”, have you ever considered that the game was, idk, actually good?
My favorite part of James' advent calander is hearing James explain the advent calander for every video in the advent calander.
Strange to me that James hasn't really delved into any Arkane Games. Dishonored / Dishonored 2 are 2 of my favorite games ever. And Prey was so fun. Havn't played deathloop but their games are literally some of the smoothest you can play with endless options.
Yeah, Arkane's gotta be one of the best developers out there. They always manage to make special games that feel unique unlike most AAA studios and I love how much emphasis they place on player freedom.
Deathloop is really fun, I would totally recommend it. I especially like how it's structured, it's not like any other game out there. Basically, instead of giving you a quicksave option to retry if you fail, they designed the game around replaying the same levels over and over again and somehow that works and is actually really fun. Been looping for 70 hours and there are still lots of things I haven't discovered yet.
Also the voice acting and writing is top notch, one of very few games that have made me laugh out loud.
I'm a big fan of Arkane as well but I feel like their games aren't for everyone (which is a good thing because it gives their games a unique identity as an authentic and rare immersive sim games out there).
@@sheyarjames4904 completely agree. d1 prey and d2 are easily some of my all time favourites but they definitely aren't for everyone
Yea and for me Dishonored 1&2 are the 1st person AssCreeds I've always wanted
even though D1 is considerably better than D2…
The first 7 minutes of this video is James going "I've not played [insert GOTY] but I've played 8 minutes of the sequel" and then going on to the next year
Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece and regarded as one of the greatest games ever made.
RE4 is probably the most influential genre-defining game ever. Virtually every third person shooter game released since has cited that game as its inspiration.
I haven't played it but i think it's kinda cringe for turning the entire horror genre into a third person shooter fest though.
I have played dead space 1+2 which is basically the spiritual successor and while the enemy design and atmosphere is perfect the story is just flat out dumb the gameplay is a borderline on rails shooter interspersed with tonally out of place uncharted ass set pieces. it's all very surface level and shallow and i blame RE4 for that.
That said though i actually have so much respect for what the team did for RE7....even if the second half kinda sucks
@@TheDarkblue57 so, you haven't played it. Make yourself a favour and play it, please. It's gameplay loop is much better than dead space and it has really tense as well.
I don't think it's ever been put as one of the goats of gaming but I can't deny its a masterpiece
@@kyanmori9272 Tons of of gaming sites/magazines have In fact showered RE4 with praise as one of the best games ever made since the day of It's release , and have always said It's possibly the best survival horror game ever made , and that It redfined the genre. It's a legendary Important game love It or hate It , even though I give best survival horror game to Silent Hill 2 all day.
Love how you completely ignored odyssey lmaooo.
is it that bad?
Well to be fair Odyssey is a GREAT game but a bad AC game .
@@donrog5035 i see
well the game is for free this weekend so im gonna try it out anyways
@@donrog5035 great game huh 😂
Well this is just a smack of nostalgia to the face man. Really fun to see what games came out together but also is making me feel old 😂
I laughed when you said "If DLCs could win Blood and Wine would have won that's a whole game in itself." which is so true 😂, that DLC was like 20 hours long it was AMAZING. Personally for 2021 not a lot of great games came out this year but my top two picks are RE8 and It Takes Two 👍, but besides that for me anyway this year was a pretty meh year.
Yeah, blood and wine 100% completion takes 50+ hours.
Love the video. You've got to play Control, I played it this past summer, and it's one of the best games I've ever played. Absolutely adored it.
Love how he acted like Odyssey didn't exist lmao
Man went over scarface and metal gear solid 4😭😭and gears of war 3
I still think Ghost of Tsushima should have got GOTY over The Last of Us Part 2. Love both games tho.
Or FFVIIR or Hades.
I mean... Ghost got Player's Voice though, so its not like it didn't get anything.
@@lshe97 Closest thing to something where our votes actually count.
@@65firered Unfortunately the whole thing was soured by brigading (by both sides), though I must say one side was at least a little bit more justifiable than the other.
@@lshe97 I wasn't aware it one that. That's cool.
Gaming peaked in 2007. Halo 3, cod4, and assassins creed all came out within a month.
I remember being blown away at the open world of assassins creed, and now it hardly even fits the definition of an open world lol
James' comedy matches my sense of humor so we'll "FUCking Peggle" 11:04
Peggle is an absolute banger, was robbed of GOTY
If you used Michael Vick in Madden 04 you’d know why it’s game of the year
Perfect time
I was very surprised when you said you haven't played dishonered, it such an amazing story driven game so I think you would want to play it and like it as well
Really enjoyed the vid James, despite it being long it was a well spent 30 minutes of nostalgia 👌
The last of us 2 is one of my favorite games of all time
The profile picture of Lazzerz smiling with the dual pistols before a mass shooting at ubisoft hq
dude, what?
Good video but man it physically pained me when you kinda dismissed Bloodborne as “solid” lol. For me its up there with GoW and TW3 as the defining games of the generation. The Souls formula is so perfect and nothing will ever beat the world and aesthetic of Bloodborne. Its just so masterfully executed and cool in every way
I've never played it, I just know people like it a lot. I just summarised it as solid
@@LazerzZ You actually really need to play it, especially if you loved Demon's Souls.
Personally I believe Bloodborne is better than GOw and TW3
Objectively a masterpiece
@@LazerzZ PLAY BLOODBORNE PLEASE IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Here's my personal list for GOTY:
2000 - Diablo 2
2001 - Silent Hill 2
2002 - Warcraft 3
2003 - Star Wars KOTOR
2004 - Half Life 2
2005 - Resident Evil 4
2006 - Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
2007 - Bioshock
2008 - GTA 4
2009 - Uncharted 2
2010 - Red Dead Redemption
2011 - Skyrim or Dark Souls
2012 - Borderlands 2
2013 - The Last of Us
2014 - Dragon Age Inquisition
2015 - The Witcher 3
2016 - DOOM
2017 - Horizon Zero Dawn
2018 - God of War
2019 - Resident Evil 2 Remake
2020 - Ghost of Tsushima or Hades
2021 - It Takes Two
Very respectable list although I would have included uncharted 4 it really does deserve it.
Solid list. I will say 2017 is botw whether we like it or not. And I very never said thus cause I know people like it but I don't like horizon zero in the slightest, don't attack me tho for that
@@kyanmori9272 Why would I attack you? I understand that most people love BotW and consider it the GOTY. I found it tedious and uninteresting. I personally enjoy a well told narrative and BotW didn't have that. The puzzles and exploration were quite fun though. Horizon on the other hand had fantastic gameplay that never gets old and a great narrative. I also may be a bit biased, since one of the lead writers for Horizon were John Gonzalez, who were also lead writer on Fallout New Vegas, my favorite RPG of all time.
@@Nickulator people get mad at me for having different opinions. It's good to know people that are good are still out there. I won't try and explain why I hate hzd because you obviously love it and I don't wanna start an arguement on which is the best game. Respect
@@kyanmori9272 No worries, I don't think either of us would be able to convince the other one otherwise. Sometimes just listening and understanding the other person's arguments and reasoning is appreciated and more than enough.
Man, it's been almost ten years since I bought PS3 and started playing video games. This video brought back so many good memories from all the games that I played. I just remember playing the first AC games in the PS3 when I really "matured" as a gamer and earned confidence to eventually finish every single game I bought ever since. I also got into Rockstar games in the PS3 with RDR and GTA V. Then came the PS4 with games that filled me with emotions like RDR2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima and even Skyrim remastered. Hell, I even recall playing the prince of Persia games on none other than the PSP.
I am not really a PC fan, I mostly use it for strategy games like total war but I had the honour to experience the Witcher 3 in my new PC a few months ago during quarantine. I played it almost every night while being with my friends on discord and doing a sharescreen with them, which really enhanced the experience even more. All those games, no matter what awards they have won, hold a special place in my heart.
I remember being a kid and having free weekends that I could play video games all the time, when I wasn't hanging out. Nowadays I don't really have the time for video games, with the exception of the summer holidays, as I am studying medicine. So all those good old memories make me really emotional.
Also, have you really been playing CK3? I love it and I didn't really thought of you as the type of person that played historical strategy games so that got me a bit excited.
You were spot on about Last of Us 2. I absolutely loved it.
me too
One of the best narratives in any medium
Do not look up Wet lead designer
I know you only mentioned it quickly, but there's a fucking sick looking DLC coming out for Crusader Kings 3 early next year. Definitely a good time to jump back into it for a bit when that comes out.
Proposition for next years advent calender: Watch this video again and drink a shot every time you say "What a game".
2009 was a cracking year and some of my most beloved games came out; assassin’s creed 2, Dragon Age Origins (you should definitely play it, it’s so good!), Infamous. Uncharted 2, Batman Arkham Asylum. Kingdoms of Amalur is a cracking game that I think got overshadowed by Skyrim, but it’s definitely worth playing and has interesting lore and fun gameplay. James said AC3 is garbage (I agree) but is there a video or review that he’s done, I’d love to see that.
I just want to state that Doom came out in 2016 and should have slaughtered overwatch
doom 2016 is a masterpeice
Doom Eternal was better than Tlou2, I will defend this take with my life
@@daniyalazhar9108 i seccond this
@@daniyalazhar9108 very differnt games. But Last of us2 was an amazing game. Doom was great FPS.
@@daniyalazhar9108 I prefer tlou2 more but my top 3 in 2020 that had an equal chance was tlou2, Doom Eternal and hades. Probably would've given it to hades
Hellblade caused in me exactly the same thing TLOU2 caused in you. What a fantastic game. A must play for sure.
Clearly you haven't played the two Ori games yet. Ori and the Blind Forest is superb, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps? What an absolute masterpiece.
Both ori games are great and underrated
I remember a load of people didn't initially like Inquisition as EA forced the game to go onto the Frostbite engine which is only really meant for FPS games. So the feel of the game is a bit odd compared to previous entries in the series. The story and characters make up for it in my opinion and it was the only real good game that year bar Shadow Of Mordor which was also excellent.
I 100% agree with you on TLOU2, one of the most special and important games of the previous generation.
I loved it too
It annoying cause it got so much hate. I think the hate is due to having to live to high standards because the 1st is undeniably better. Still the 2nd is an amazing game, it's borderline masterpiece.
@@kyanmori9272 No the hate is for the stupid decision to kill Joel and replace it with a damn whinny he/she.
The Witcher 3 is actually soooo goood
good shit man, did you do a breakdown video somewhere on why you're not a fan of Breath of the Wild?
Nah, I don't really want to either, I like that people like it and I don't want to rain on their parade. I'm content knowing it's not for me, but plenty love it.
@@LazerzZ at what point did you not like it? I remember in your stream you were saying it's an amazing game and you loved it. Just wondering haha. (BTW I think you got star wars bf1 and bf2 mixed up in this video. Bf2 was the disaster not bf1)
This not only makes me feel old, but also makes me feel sad because as an old person, I remember the magic these old games from 04-2014 felt like they had and I will never be able to have a child’s mind again to feel that magic.
James, are there any plans for a "Valhalla broke me" video?
I appreciate the thorough research for this
I wish I could like tlou 2 after yet again listening to you talk about it but I just can't for some reason
As a huge Splinter Cell fan, it is widely accepted Splinter Cell conviction is bad but most of us had fun on it for some reason
Love this! Would love to see some CK3 content from you!!
2007 was such an insane year for video games.

RE4 was one of my favorites in the series
Hey, have you played any of the Doom games? You completed missed 2016 em Eternal in here. Those are one of the best fps of all time. You need to play them in case you haven't
It’s just fascinating to see this string of great year after great year, and there’s also probably a lot of great games that just didn’t immediately come up in the Google search results, and then after 2012, you’re lucky to get 5 good games that year, when it had been a renaissance of creativity since 2007.
What a steep, steep decline for this industry in so many ways expressed with just a few search results.
i think you are wrong every year has had multiple good games but we have rose colored glasses for games back then when I play them now some of them don't hold up
You should really play psyconauts 2. Hella fun that game is
Bro keep making videos like this, they’re fun to watch
Once you've come around to playing and finishing the original FF7, are you gonna watch the movie Advent Children? A watch along with your fans would be pretty great :)
Definitely, I plan to do the whole compilation for FF7
@@LazerzZ ayo thats crazy.
I played the remake because your enthusiasm for it pushed me into playing it. I genuinely loved it and didn't want to wait forever so i could find out what happens next. After i played the yuffie dlc it went straight into the original game for me, and i litteraly just finished that one too. Now I'm playing crisis core emulated on my phone, and once I've finished that one i will read the two spin off novels. I'm gonna top it all off with the movie. Thank you for introducing me to this franchise :)
Can’t believe Lego Star Wars released the year before I was born.
It was my suggestion, happy it made it through the advent calendar 😁😊; thanks James, interesting and great opinions as always 😁🎄
here is who I would've give the award (of course I havent played all games in the existence, so dont judge me)
I will start in 2003 because why not
2003: KOTOR
2004: San Andreas
2005: SOTC
2006: Bully (Yes over Oblivion and FFXII)
2007: Portal
2008: GTA IV
2009: AC2 (Yes over Dragon Age and Uncharted 2)
2010: Mass Effect 2 (New Vegas really super close second, 2 of the greatest games of all time)
2011: Skyrim (I really wanted to give to Portal 2, but I can't ;-;)
2012: BO2 (why not lol)
2013: GTA V (Black Flag and The Last Of US close seconds)
2014: Divinity (Inquisition is good tho, and I love Shadow Of Mordor)
2015: The Witcher 3
2016: Uncharted 4
2017: Shadows Of War (I never played Breath Of The Wild or Odissey)
2018:RDR2
2019: Fallen Order (Didn't played Sekiro)
2020:The Last Of Us 2 (I think its a bit overrated tho)
Usually I don't type comments saying this was a video but THIS WAS A GOOD VIDEO
I agree with The Saboteur. I love that game.
my fav youtube series
TLOU2 GOTY BABY THE MASTAPIECE
2003 had GREAT GAMES. Madden was just ahead of it's time then
You should really play Deus Ex, James. You should really, really play Deus Ex.
Also, as a side note, the VGAs (or at least the new ones) have always been corrupt, and are known to gatekeep certain genres from ever winning awards at all. Upper Echelon has a really good video on this that he uploaded recently.
Tlou 2 is a masterpiece
It really is. I hated it the 1st play through. I hated what the did to Joel and Abby was idk, annoying. I replayed it and my god the locations and set pieces are just incredible. Still hate they killed Joel. Abby has grown on me a little.
2013 GOTY was TLOU, not GTA V
Tlou got more goty awards but gta v won the spike award which is what he was doing
I could hear that excitement for Warrior Within in the 2004 section lol
I'd love to see a video on that game, I feel like it's criminally overlooked because of it's "edgy" aesthetic, while it's IMO probably Ubisoft's best game ever.
"Assassins creed 3, garbage..."
AC3 is tied for first with Black flag for me lol
Loved this one mate!
Alternate title:
Bangers Through The Years
Although they were not listed Persona 5 came out in 2017 and Persona 5 Royal came out 2020
Holy shit yes. P5 royal is my goty in 2020 and is my 2nd fav game all time.
They showed the Odyssey Logo on AC origins, the disrespect smh
Love that this man is now planning on playing the FromSoft games
The greatest games of all time
You need to play the walking dead game, I don't need to say this, but it's personally the best, most personal game I've played, in terms of characters and meaningful emotional moments
felt the same way about last of us 2 then i played ff14, a story thats had 10 years to breath with good writers at the helm just can't be beaten
I love James' critique videos, but there's something about him just gushing about games with us casually. It's like we're sitting down and just having a chat with a mate. Love his content.
I understand that The Witcher 3 was pretty much the probable winner of 2015 but don't disrespect MGSV like that man, it was a great game.
Imo, MGSV has The Witcher beat handily in the gameplay department. Story wise, I think the opposite is true though. Both of them are lovely games and I consider them both to be all-time greats.
@@Nich0Latte For sure, Witcher 3 is my favourite game of all time, however MGSV definitely has the tighter mechanics, with a 10/10 gameplay loop - And so it should, considering it was the 8th Metal Gear/6th Metal Gear Solid developed by Kojima.
@@Nich0Latte but witcher3 also has beat in the open world department as well. Great open world games normally dont have the best gameplay.
I’d really like to see you try telltales the walking dead
2013 and 2018 were incredible years for gaming.
@@gleam6370 2013 was also an incredible year for tv shows! That year was so special to me. Breaking Bad finale, True Detective season 1, Game of Thrones (when it was at its peak), etc.

I think you should definitely play the Titanfall 2 campaign as in my opinion it's really, really great and some say a masterpiece but I'll let you decide. Also surprised you didn't mention life is strange or Undertale for 2015. Also (again) you should check out the outer wilds and control.
It was Ight
2021 is kinda dead too, 2022 will be pure videogame havoc
Mr lazerzz heart this comment and when you do I’ll edit it later to be something epic and cool and nice so it appears over the rest and people see it first thinking “this guys epic”
Yoo man you mentioned Kingdoms of amalur. I'd love if you'd play it and maybe make a video about it. Such a gem
My 2016 was 100% Inside. I loved Uncharted 4, put hundreds of hours into overwatch, but inside was my first indie game and I freaking love it. If you haven’t played inside, I feel 15 quid is a steal, even though it only took me two hours first playthrough, those were a solid freaking two hours man. Cool as hell.
Cyberpunk is very good, but i would have put got over it and the last of us. Ghost is just so good.
No way this man said no to mgsv
Bloodborne is more than solid
“Just cause 3 has nothing on just cause 2” imma have to stop u right there
The wolfenstein games are underrated
great video
Funny how nostalgia changes our preception on games. Before 2010 James was a kid, and has a kid he loved every game and felt nostalgic about it. After 2010 we all got older and games just dont hit the same, thats why the "quality" dropped.
As a 2000 kid, games just dont fell the same after 2015
so 2012 is the year of the "3" games
After watching this video i remember having so many games in my Steam and Epic library and game pass which i gotta play. Seriously though i really enjoyed The Tomb Raider reboot series. And being an AC fan i've played all games till Origins, going to play Odessey next. The Yakuza series should get more love IMO. Can't wait for GOW to come to PC.
Oh man did he just skip past DMC 3 without a mention
This honestly made me really sad. Back then there were SO MANY amazing games. Every game felt fresh and revolutionary. Now games feel like carbon copies of each other, full of microtransactions and terrible design decisions. I'm glad I got to experience so many great games growing up, but I'm really sad at the state of the video game industry right now.
Surprised you aren’t playing deathloop. Heard it’s actually pretty good and Arkane has a good track record. Haven’t played it myself but from what I’ve seen the world building and lore looks really interesting.
If you heard it good then your listening to the wrong people. The game got heaps of bad reveiw and rightfully so. Only critics and IGN said it was good. Unless you really want to or its on a deal so it's cheaper don't get it
Trust me James The Walking Dead is narratively right up your alley
Omg please make a video on prototype
Wait what did you not like about Metro Exodus?
Can’t believe u didn’t notice spec ops line brilliant game
Pure Nostalgia!!

You can tell the games he hasn’t played - Mass Effects, he like open world games far too much for me
This video made me feel so old😭
