Insulation was a huge expense for me, so good advice on containers. I'd love to convert a rail carriage.

Great video! Been toying with the container home idea for a while now and very glad I came across this. Much appreciated. Jeremy, Zululand

Awesome, thanks for the feedback Jeremy. There is place for containers which I think is more from an architectural point of view.

    This is fabulous!!!
Thanks so much for creating this video.
Steve is very helpful and informative.
This is a lifestyle that so many people are desperately seeking for but with all the options, things to consider and legal ramifications and limitations it can be so overwhelming.
Having a South African resource of relevant info in the industry might help the movement progress in a positive and healthy direction.
Off the grid tiny living communities is a wonderful opportunity when you find the right builders, co tractors and fellow community members.
Looking forward to the next vid and thanks again!

Some good points, everyone's scenario is different, some people have more labour and time than money, others have money and no time, some own land, others don't. I think it's very subjective, but it's always wise not to get caught up in some fantasy and look at what is truly practical and effective in the given scenario and the resources available.
I think the cheapest way is to contract a decent "Wendy house" or log profile company, get the shell up and then add as you go along.
If you seal it up properly and insulate you shouldn't have a rodent problem. If you look after it, it will last a lifetime. No foundations needed etc..

My husband and I moved to KZN for work. Our home is still in Cape Town and we did not want to buy property in KZN. So we bought a luxury off-road Mobi lodge. It would be great if we could find a safe place to park it! We need access to water , power and a porta potti disposal place.

Hi there - fantastic info shared in your video, thanks a mil. 👍 We are currently looking at buying land with the intention of developing a tiny house village in the Wester Cape. The land zoning issue seems to be a bit of a headache. What would the best land zone category be for a tiny house village (preferably non-moveable tiny homes because the moment you mention a tiny house on wheels then applications for resort zoning - caravan and mobile homes, comes into play). Any suggestions or assistance would really be appreciated.

Lucia. There are a few legal scenarios here. Basically the law doesn't differentiate between a tiny house and a house, a house is a house no matter how big. To follow the law to the t, you would need residential zoned property and would have to subdivide into either sectional titles or full titles, pretty much the same as any town house or estate development. To do this, proper planning will need to be done with services installed and so on. Most properties in SA are allowed no more than 2 dwellings on a stand, many in towns only one, depending on local bylaws and property sizes and so on...
