    It's impressive and mesmerizing how timeless and completely unbelievable this album is. I'm a new member in the Elton John community, I'm just 25 years old, even though I'm kind of a "product of my time" and completely ignorant about music on a technical level, beholding the drums of Danny Bailey was something to live for. I felt like I had this beautiful and dreadful monster in front of me, and the magical suspense this sound gave, the, almost, religious revelation it was, and how it still give me all the chills after I discovered this album in highschool for ten years by now. And, most incredible of all was surfing through these monuments of albums, and uncharting the first decade of this band. It was and it will always be an enchanted time I had as a teen and for life to come. Thank you Ray, Davey, Nigel, Dee, John and Bernie for blessing us with your music!
    And thank you, Jon Blackstone for making the incredible content!

    Hi guys. I enjoy your videos. I was thirteen when this album came out and just moved to a new neighborhood and met my best friend (even though he passed away, still my best friend). We used to listen to this album over and over again and again. It was like listening to a story. Each song took me to a different time and place. Every time I hear a song from this album I’m back in 1973 sitting on the couch and traveling through the songs on the album. There are SO MANY songs that don’t get the airplay they deserve (This Song Has No Title, Jamaica Jerk-Off, I’ve Seen That Movie Too, Social Disease). Great memories!!!! What a time to grow up as a teen!!!

    I am always amazed that Elton, Dee, Nigel, and Davey (plus Gus) wrote, recorded, and completed GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD in such an incredibly short period of time. Everyone (Bernie included) was so on top of their game - all at the same time. I didn't buy the album until the summer of 1976 - at Durant's Appliances in Kemptville, Ontario, Canada! Elton and the band were able to almost effortlessly excel writing & performing such a wide range of genres at such a high creative level all on one record - extraordinary. "Bennie and the Jets" hooked me as a single in early 1974 and then "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" on his GREATEST HITS blew me away. Hearing "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" that summer of 1976 on GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD and HERE AND THERE was mind blowing. The whole album is filled with great songs: "All The Young Girls Love Alice" and "The Ballad of Danny Bailey" and "Grey Seal" and "Candle in the Wind" and "Harmony" and, as you mentioned, the underrated "I've Seen That Movie Too." The title track is sublime. Agreed, the songs on the album are cinematic. A pop (much more than that) masterpiece. I am so glad that I got to see Elton, Dee, and Nigel live in 1980, and then with Davey in 1982 (twice), and 1984 (twice). Do you think that Gus gets the credit he deserves for shaping Elton's sound on these great 70s albums? Thanks for re-posting this video in hi def.

    My stories of being a child and listening to this album is way too long to get into here, but this album and Captain Fantastic define my childhood and played constantly along with The Beatles. But Goodbye is literally the one and ONLY album I crave and need to listen to every so often. "I've Seen That Movie Too" is the stand-out track, "This Song Has No Title", "Harmony", "Danny Bailey", "All The Girls Love Alice" and "Candle In The Wind" are just sheer classics with very little competition.

I was a closeted homo and a hopeless romantic completely in love with a roommate at the time that had the finest stereo equipment in his room. We would lie on his bed and listen to this album endlessly, never touching one another, thoroughly channelling our hearts and feelings into this album. And me, hopelessly longing. I was born in '74, was raised by my great aunt, and some of my earliest memories were of my cousin playing piano along to this album. He gave me his copy for my tenth birthday and I would play it over and over. There was just something magical about its sound plus I was struggling with my sexuality and Elton being so obviously gay made me feel less alone. I couldn't be as openly flamboyant but I didn't feel like I was such a weirdo. Elton helped save my life. To me he'll always be one of my biggest inspirations and heroes.

    Bernie taupin is my favorite lyricist because his words are so cinematic. I have always thought that Bernies words were the movie that I I was watching and Elton and band were the most memorable and greatest soundtrack music of all time. That brought the movie to life and and made the movie live. . If you like Bernie wrote the script, and Elton and the band were all of the actors and the soundtrack.

    • @JonBlackstone
      @JonBlackstone  Před měsícem +3

      Agreed! I believe Elton's writing changed dramatically as soon as he began writing with another lyricists on "Single Man". The change was obvious and shocking to me (even as a kid). I bought Single Man the day it was released and I'll never forget the way the first song felt lifeless to me. Then the opening words to "Shine On Through" instantly caught my attention; "Oh, my love. I have cursed the stars above". That first lyric jumped out at me. Bernie Taupin would never write something so trite and generic. Nor would he have ever written such a cliche rhyme as "love + above". I'm not saying I was smart for a kid; but I immediately felt the loss of brilliance in Elton's composing style and the lame lyrics. I believe Bernie's lyrics inspired Elton in a way no one ever has since. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the great comments!

      @@JonBlackstone absolutely. As talented as Elton is. Elton,,Bernie, and the Elder John band, were an entire package. Like, The Beatles and Pink Floyd I will throw LED Zeppelin and Queen in there as well. When those bands, broke apart, the original creative spark ended, although, the obvious talent was there. That was it for the groundbreaking creativity.

    There is nothing better in the musical world than the early works of one Reginald Dwight. This album is amazing on so many levels. Dissecting the tracks and songs you get to hear Gus Dudgeons arrangements (producer) and David Hentschel's engineering of the music. The way the orchestra and strings combines to offset and complement the timing of each song and accentuates Elton's full playing is mesmerizing (listen to Ballad of Danny Bailey and I've Seen That Movie Too). Have loved this album since it came out. This is Elton's opus at the time and is timeless. While I also personally love his second double album (Blue Moves) GYBR will be the litmus test for music for a very very long time. Thanks for posting!!!

    In 1973 after church on Sunday my family went to JC Penny and I was bound and set to buy my first non-cut-out bin records. I had only so much money to spend from my paper route income - I could either buy Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or Don't Shoot me and Now and Then (Carpenters). I chose the latter and ironically these two albums remain among my least favorite albums of both artists.
    It wasn't until several EJ album purchases later I bought GYBR in 1975, again on the way home from church on a Sunday. This album was the first album I played non-stop from beginning uninterrupted and VERY loudly, much to the chagrin of my mother, lol. She asked me, do you have to play it so loudly? I said, yes I do! I was enamored with every single song - pure genius.... This remains a perfect album and my favorite album of all time by any artist.

    When you first heard the GYBR single in September 1973, did you also automatically think that Bernie's Honky Cat was fed up with the big city and reversing course? I sure did, and could imagine a screenplay beginning and ending with the two hits... maybe with some of Social Disease, Country Comfort, Rotten Peaches etc... I had seen Friends and also thought of how 'Can I Put You On' and 'Honey Roll' were inserted into the narratives about the young rich boy and the young girl with family property in France escaping the trappings of their urban families...

    It's almost unthinkable to me that a highly successful artist would so capriciously and summarily fire his entire band, at the absolute zenith of their fame. Truly a head-scratcher, and without any other comp in Pop/Rock history. If it were a single member, one could surmise that it was a personality or money conflict of some sort....but the entire band? Who does that?!?! And it's fairly obvious his music was never quite the same afterwards. Yes, there were scattered hits across a couple more decades, but the punch & fire was completely missing.
