  • Dr. Ashley Milton is an African American who moved to Ghana and recently released a podcast she produced for the BBC called The Return.
    She had a listening party that brought a group of diaspora together to listen to the podcast. Afterwards, she had a discussion about her experiences in Ghana and touched on some interesting topics of being a diaspora living in Ghana.

    This desire to go to America is present here in the nation of Panama. Everyone wants to make the money to be made in the US, which greatly exceeds what they can earn in their home country. I explain the reality of chasing that dollar and how it affects you as a person living in the US.

    Wonderful conversation. So grateful to live in this day and time and Esther Armah’s emotional justice roadmap especially the point of giving each other grace in our interactions across the divide is so relevant.

    I'm Ghanaian now living and thriving in Ghana after 9yrs of living in Babylon U.S.A... I can relate with your story of crying yourself to work. America can kill you, believe me. Thanks for sharing your story. But believe me the Ghanaian who haven't been through the American experience will hate you for telling them the truth about life in the west. Shalom. APTTMH YAH❤

      Making a blanket statement based on personal experience is ignorance at best

      When you are deprived of certain life essential for a long time, you become so obsessed with getting that thing, that no other effort can take away your attention from it.
      No doubt Western world is stressful but there are wide range of opportunities that everybody gets his/her chance that ordinarily one will not get in Africa; healthcare, option of schooling and education, ease of getting material thing, luxury, cars, clothing, ease of getting credit etc....at same time, your time, your happiness, relationship, peace etc are taken away from you by the system.
      On the other hand, Africa offers you peace, relationship, less stress,less competition etc.
      The dilemma and the irritating thing is when one either and does not value it but crave what someone doesn't value it. Ghanaians will not hate anybody for advising people stay in Ghana and not rush to go to Western world.
      Simply, "you don't know the value what you have until someone place value on it.

    Need more of such intellectual discussions by African diaspora articulating in that substantive way the various aspects of life on the subcontinent. And Sisters, your current daily experiences & realities - not sugar-coated - is brought full circle by that quote from Maya Angelou. Keep Sharing …

    No one is saying anything about having a husband. When I came to Ghana, I said, "thank the Creator that black women in and from the USA are not the only beautiful black women in the world. Real familys are in Ghana

    A poor african arrives in America to a higher standard of living. A good aprtment with a fridge and gas stove, running water, electricity that works and functioning government.
    why would they NOT want to go to America?

  • @markweekes8858
    @markweekes8858 Před 5 měsíci

    your stories arent relevant to the natives because the African reality is different and the immigrant's mindset is different to the native african american. He doesnt worry about police brutality and racism, his.mission in america filters his American experience.
    So stop trying to influence their decision to go to America, when your very presence and relative economic comfort is a real advertising and confirmation of their reasons to leave for America.
