  • GPD win max 2 is an awesome device, especially this year. But do it's specs, and jack of all trades mentality save it or hinder it? Is this really a device you should spend over $1000 on? Let's talk!

    64gb 7500mt ddr5 ram

    I have this with 64gb and 2tb storage. For me as an Architect who use some CAD softwares and 3D software. This is absolutely beyond my expectations. The Performance is much better than my previous laptop which is razerblade 15 2019 version. For me , I used this mainly for portability and also for some AAA games! But Man this is absolutely beast in some way. Performance is very good even at 15W . I’ve tried to play Arkham Nights in medium 800p at 15w, it got me around 3hrs playing continuously. What I do really hope this will not break up with me in just few years, of course because of GPD support maybe questionable in some dudes. But time will tell . I will be happy if this will still perform and not broken down the line for the next 4 to 5 years. 😊 portability is my number 1 factor why I bought this.

    Don't know why but I love to use devices you will not see on every corner. For some years I use a 3" inch phone from Unihertz and its great. I use it for music, to navigate and for streaming or hotspot and now for traveling I'd like to have a small laptop too. My Lenovo is 13" but on public transport still not easy to use and the new 14" are even bigger and the feel more heavy. So I think the GPD is perfect as I even can play a game on the go or at home on a bigger screen. Oh and for music playing live I think it will be great too. Good performance and touch for some tweaking of tracks.

      I like the size of the win mini, but I struggle to think when I would use it over a plethora of other devices. Maybe if they do a future iteration with a dual screen instead of built in keyboard I would be interested. I think ayaneo is doing one of those as well, but the current renders of it look really ugly 😂

    I love my GPD WinMAX 2 2022 version. Sure, there is games on the phone but this is a soli9d option if you want to play your PC games, browse the web or watch videos or movies on larger screen during bus commute or lay down and play games in bed at home or hotel room when traveling. The antennas suck for wireless compared to other devices I have using the same wireless chipset this one performs worse, the 4G might be diminished by them as well. I originally got the steamdeck LCD but found that text was difficult to read unless I used the magnify function, so I prefer this screen over the steamdeck and Widnows supports more of the games I was playing

    Its weird, I've now had rog ally, legion go, steam deck, and a win max 2, and I keep coming back to the win max 2 no matter what, like you I cant really say why, I've only got the 6800u version to but would still rather game on it, jack of all trades, master of none suits it well

    • @ancientflames
      @ancientflames  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yeah it’s an interesting device. Fun to mess with. The rog ally doesn’t have good ergonomics or buttons, and the steam deck is too weak and requires a lot of tweaking to get epic, Xbox and other windows stuff running on it without dual boot. The win max 2 is literally just a little touch laptop and is super versatile. If the next iteration has a version where the trackpad is down and the keyboard is up (and removes the built in controller) I think I’d like it more. The built in controller is just not good enough to use over a Bluetooth Xbox or switch controller.

    hi mate! just watched the video and although i don't admit to be wrong easily when i find something that looks to fullfill my needs to the absolute most, i'll say that your points are really strong. i see how gpd is moving very fast in some unconventional aspects and leaving behind others.
    as of now i'm still quite convinced into converting my 3 devices setup (gaming pc, cheap laptop for studying and tablet for note taking) into the single win max. about this, i'm quite concerned about the real usability of the touchscreen for notes. do you think that with the stylus it would be accurate and responsive enough to write on it? and about the display hinges, i can't seem to find the max opening, can it open fully flat? thanks for the response!

    • @ancientflames
      @ancientflames  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I think you would be fine with the stylus, and the win max opens to what is essentially a 180 degree angle, but I wouldn’t call it flat per-say as the screen is obviously higher up than the rest of the device and I’m not sure about putting too much pressure down on it when it’s in that position. And even if you can I can’t imagine it would be very comfortable.
      In no universe will this device be an optimal replacement for any of your devices except maybe the cheap laptop, and even then the screen is pretty small to work on.
      If anything I’d keep the current device you have that is indispensable and use the win max to replace the other 2 devices that you use less frequently. Like if you take tons of notes, write and draw keep the tablet etc, etc.

    Nice ESO thumbnail background, I have that as my desktop background. I love the win max 2 but had problems from day one that only got worse every day. Eventually gave up and returned for repair this past weekend. At that point my screen had stopped displaying entirely and before that it was randomly restarting. Also restarted when lifted once turned on. Two separate hardware issues!
    I can’t wait to get it back though, it’s like I’ve sent my child to overnight camp. I have other handhelds but I like the win max 2 the most because the screen is larger so I can hold my device further away from my face.
    Regardless of my issues and my costly return fees, if they get it back to me fixed quickly I will buy the next device from them that catches my eye. After getting the Deck, AyaNeo, and Rog Ally this one is by far my favorite design. I just can’t go back to the other styles now.

    If you want a portable laptop- NOT a gaming handheld with no keyboard- with a full array of i/o and enough power to do more than watch CZcams videos and play minesweeper, then this is pretty much the only game in town. The built in controllers are cool to have in a pinch and, if you're resting it on a table, are actually pretty comfy... but i use em about only 5% of the time
    10.1 inches on a screen is a bit small for my liking, but nearly everything in the 11-13 inch realm is REMOVING ports instead of adding them. I don't know about you, but for a lot of us dongles are deal breakers. I need a PC to give me the advantages only PCs have over other consumer and creative electronics, so i have no clue why so many big companies shy away from that
    I'm one of those "bozos" with a job where this device plays really well with my lifestyle(merchant mariner, if you're curious) but i won't also pretend a major appeal of this device is just the cool factor and, to a lesser extent, a strange nostalgia for netbooks. I'm 32 and this is basically what we wanted netbooks to be all those years ago lol. I also recognize this kind of presentation just isn't for everyone either. This will never be a gangbuster selling laptop because it's too niche for what it's offering
    The best thing i can say about the WM2 is really just that's it's a super friggin solid jack of all trades. For every niggle or complaint about a design choice, i can think of 2 really good things that same design offers the device overall
    I will say the trackpad is really just not great. Not in placement or function. Other than navigating the OS, you're better off getting an external mouse

    The screen is sadly it's biggest flaw. To be fair it's more of an "IPS panel" problem than the specific display that GPD used. But it's really bad when you play games with a lot of motion. I played a lot of Overload on my Win Max 2. But after playing it on my Steam Deck OLED. It basically ruined even more the Win Max 2 screen for me. If they ever make an OLED Win Mini I would jump on that without any hesitation. Still has really vibrat colors on static or low motion images. It's just a shame that the IPS tech has such poor response times.
