    Hi, are there any substitutes for the spackling compound?

  • @sarahmcdonough7713

    so i saw the correction about it being spackling not caulk when you misspoke, and other fake cake videos ive seen also only use spackling, but as soon as i learned that fake cakes are a thing (obsessed obv), i thought about caulk right away. its seems so naturally shiny and glossy and beautiful, kind of the.. swiss buttercream of the hardware world. does it not work for fake cakes? have you tried to use it? the gun trigger applicator style ones might be kind of awkward to use but the ones in the plastic tubes seem so inviting.. its like it WANTS to be frosting already u know?

      The first fake cakes I made (like 8 years ago) I used caulking. It works beautifully but it’s incredibly heavy and very tiring to squeeze!

    Hi! weird question, but im autistic and textures are an issue for me. Can you describe what it feels like? is it akin to unglazed pottery you would say? or like a bumpy chalkboard or something?

    • @sarahmcdonough7713
      @sarahmcdonough7713 Před rokem +2

      hey, i dont have texture issues but i just really hate unglazed ceramic, though part of that is the various sounds it makes (against other things, against hands etc) as much as how it feels. i dont have a problem with the dried spackling. its dry, and a bit foamy feeling. i wont press into mine very hard, but it has a bit of give under pressure. it somehow feels.. light, as if your fingers can sense that its very low density. its not super smooth, so not like a chalkboard. its mostly lacking that kind of "dusty" feeling that both chalkboards and unglazed clay give me (i dislike both), though like i said its not smooth or glossy, so it does have a very fine (and not unpleasant to me) grit, but not like sandpaper or the coarse grit of unglazed pottery.
      i dont know if you asked this because you were thinking of making your own, but i recently made some faux frosting hair accessories using 100% silicone outdoor sealant, which dried incredibly smooth, glossy, and rubbery. so if you think the spackling might not work for you, you could give silicone a go. i also tried silicone caulk (there are so many different tubes of this shit at the hardware store and i honestly dont know the actual difference between them so idk if these terms are the best, i just know the first one didnt say caulk on it and the second one did) which i didnt like as much because it still seems a bit malleable in a way i dont like (you can still make a fingerprint imprint in it) even after drying; imagine hot glue thats like 90% dry. the pure silicone that i used first holds its shape and springs back when you press it so if you do try it id suggest looking for something that pretty much just says silicone on the tube, not caulk. and definitely in a squeeze tube, not those cones with the long tip that you need a separate applicator to use. also make sure to check on the tube that its white, not clear!

      @@nootnoot630 no problem. I was basically born to answer this kind of question in excruciating detail 😂
      I’m able to look at the tubes now and the silicone product I do like is GE brand advanced 100% silicone for windows and doors projects, the packaging is gold and blue. I did NOT like Dap brand kwik seal ultra 100% waterproof siliconized sealant for kitchen, bath, and plumbing, silver and red packaging, because it’s still like squishy and malleable.
      Dap does make a super tiny container of the lightweight spackling, like the size of a rocks glass, if you were curious just to try it without getting a lot.
      Hope this helped, good luck!
