I've made this video as a few people have asked me for the parts list to upgrade the Hogwarts Express that I showed in my previous video:
• Motorized Hogwarts Exp...
Here's that parts list for you to download and import to Bricklink: bit.ly/2V4zze7
Note: in the video, I used a Minifigure base, but in the parts list, I've swapped that for a studded 1x4 tile, but that's up to you to decide.
Now, in my original video, I had used grey pieces as I hadn't yet ordered the red and black bits I needed. This has now been rectified thanks to my last BrickLink order:
• LEGO Parts Haul from B...
In the video I'll show you the things you need to know, build it up at a high speed in HD. This means you can pause each frame and see exactly what I did in it.
Overall, I am very, very happy with the end result. This new tender - v3 as I'm calling it - is rock solid and will hopefully work well for anyone that builds it!
There's some optional bits like the coal I've put on top. Seen other people do this and think it really adds to the look. You may also want to fill the gap into the left of where the cable is. Again, up to you. This is just my suggestions.
Let me know what you think of this build along with any suggestions when you've finished watching the video and don’t forget to like it!

what are the exact motor pieces you used.
Playin Braedyn I’ll get the part numbers for you later. But it’s the white powered up battery box and motor that’s included in the newest trains.
what is an 'xml field' on bricklink
Hi I can’t seem to access the part list for this build, do you have another format I could download it from
What a fantastic conversion. I like how you dressed the powered up top with the "coal". I'll be doing it this way tonight as I already have it mostly completed.
How’d you go on the conversion?
I do want to watch it step by step. Thats why I'm here.
Thanks for the xml list, as a first time bricklink user it was not as scary as I thought, hope to have this thing running around my Christmas tree, thanks :)
Good to hear! Hope it helps you and you get as much pleasure from it as I do! Let me know how you go!
Whohoo, nice pumped up speed build! =D It was quite easy to follow how you built it, even at speed. I like that you have used mostly common parts, so just about anyone could do this modifications with a few spares they have.
Thanks! When I did the mark 2 (the one before this) it was a lot of my parts bin. Only bits I didn’t have - in the wrong colour - previously was those corner plates I used. I like the strength they give it
@@GJBricks Yeah the Corner plates are great for strength. I find myself using them more and more.
One of those pieces I wish had existed growing up. My models would’ve been so much stronger
STEPS FOR ADDING THE BRICKLINK PARTS LIST WITH EXTRA PARTS FROM SET 60197 FOR THOSE WHO ARENT FAMILIAR WITH BRICKLINK
1) click on bit.ly/2V4zze7
(the parts list XML file in the description of this video)
2) copy the xml text but EXCLUDE the first 3 lines. So the first line you select should be and select all the text down to the bottom which is also
3) login to bricklink and click the "want" tab
4) click "upload" in top right of page and then click "upload bricklink XML format"
5) under "add to" tab, select "create new wanted list" and under "wanted list name" I called it "75955 - Hogwarts Express motorised powered up upgrade" (yes we spell Motorised with an "S" in Australia (and the rest of the world, haha))
6) paste selected xml text into "copy and paste here" window
7) click "proceed to verify items"
8) scroll to bottom and select "add to wanted list"
9) now you have to add the extra items. 1 x motor, 1 x battery box with bluetooth, 4 wheels and 2 axles. In the search bar at the top of the page type in the following;
bb0896c01
and click enter / select the motor
10) select "add to my wanted list" and select your wanted list that you created. I selected "75955 - Hogwarts Express motorised powered up upgrade" as that's what I called this list
11) confirm the "quantity" tab is set to "1" and then select "add to my wanted list"
12) add the rest of the items the same way as in steps 9-11 but make sure to change quantity as indicated
bb0892c01 - you require 1
55423c01 - you require 4
3706 - you require 2
13) you should really confirm all these parts and quantities, but these are the parts and quanitites I found I needed when looking at the 60197 passenger train set inventory on bricklink. You can do this by typing "60197" in the search bar at the top of the bricklink page. Then selecting "60197 passenger train" and once it loads the page, select "Set Inventory"
Thanks Josh! It's not the most simple of processes. I actually did a video on that process too.
czcams.com/video/y0DcsaJ_Who/video.html
And I'm going to do a new version of the video to include the motor and be clearer.
Agree it's a bit more straightforward with the new motor and battery combo. Great job. And thanks for the shoutout 👍
Thanks Caz and you’re welcome (again). This was a more thorough version of my last one with the right parts. Felt good to finish it!
I need a way to like this video more than once :) Thank you!!
thank you, can you do it step by step. slore
Great work Greg 👍 Like how you laid the pieces out so we can see what you were working with. The blue tooth motor is so good. Your city is going to be well serviced with train options!! Oh, and you win my prize for best Speed Build music ever.....foot tapping!!!!!! 😂👍👍😀
Outstanding! What do I win? An Emerald Night? :) That song just felt right and was the perfect length - took that as a sign!
Glad you enjoyed the video. When are you picking this set up? And I'm 99% certain it would fit the IR system. Main difference is lots of cables and taller.
GJBricks The prize is.......a free subscription to my channel. For a year. I know - too generous. But you deserve it 😜 I will pick it up at twice the price once it’s been discontinued - I’m really good like that. I will definitely follow your guide when I do and upgrade my motors at the same time 👍👍
Awesome! sign me up! Wait... I already am signed up!
And you need to work on that pricing thing. Caz got 2 for 1 on hers I think (I want a 2nd one for parts! Mainly wheels but will make the carriage upgrade easier)
GJBricks not quite as good as 2-4-1 but it was 3-4-2 from Argos. I got two trains and the Pirate rollercoaster 😃
I wish we had deals like that here! I need that roller coaster to go with my Ferris Wheel!
I really love the Sleek design you gave the Tender and Will be using it for my build. However, for the couplings, I think I'll be going with Magnetic ones similar to the Emerald Night.
Good call! I will at some point. Just haven't ordered any yet. But prefer that consistency for sure!
Hi Jacob, since you didn't mention the wheel arches in the build, I had to reverse build on the ground and then figure out how to space it so that the wheels were not jamming against the car. You should add a side note to your video. But besides that, thanks for the video.
Hey lee, glad it helped. Can you send me a photo of what you mean. I didn’t use any arches in my build. Gjb.bricks@gmail.com
Thanks. Greg
Great tutorial GJ! It’s a very nice version of the ‘add-power-functions-to-the-HE’! You and Caz have very great solutions both! Ha, the music was cool :-D The result is very nice - I like how well it’s hidden away! Great stuff! Thanks for sharing this and keep up the wonderful work - looking forward to seeing the next upgrade :-)
Thanks Jakob! I went with the super rocky music. Very happy with how it turned out as it is rock solid! More planned. Just need to plan how to get time!
GJBricks ha - there are many great ways to use time to find out how to get more time 🤣
I need the LEGO Delorean!
GJBricks we all do! :-D
Was a great set!
nice touch with the 1x1 round plates :)
I’d like to take credit for it but I’ve seen quite a few people do it. Does make a huge difference though, especially being a bright white block like that! I kind of like how it makes it feel a bit more like a working train
Thanks for everything. I orderd your bricklink parts list, and did your build, Everyone had an awesome time driving the hogwarts express around the tracks. only Comment for potential improvement, a video posted that was slowed down, would have helped, it wasnt a complex build, but I did find it hard to follow at that speed, but through repeat watches and pausing I was able to duplicate it, and it is a very good build.
Glad you found it useful and everyone enjoyed playing with it! That makes me so happy knowing people found it useful!
And I learnt from this video myself. Was in two minds about redoing the video as I’m not sure how long the set will last. But I’m better at them now so maybe I should. Thanks for the feedback. There’s other feedback to incorporate too.
I’ve worked out that we are missing wheel arches. We are complete novices with this stuff, and it’s a bit hard to try and work it all out. Apart from your parts ;list, is there anything else we should havre. Thanks for patience.
Hey Tina, that is not a problem. I love helping LEGO builders. My parts list should cover most things. Besides the train motor and battery box, that’s it. Or should be. I’ve got a Facebook page. Hop on there and send me a photo of what you’re stuck on through messenger. Https://Facebook.com/GJBricks
Amazing
I also invite you to subscribe, watch and comment on the channel
Hi Jacob. Good video, although somewhat fast, I solved it by configuring youtube for slower playback and to better follow the video. I would like to know which piece is the yellow one that is placed at the base, minute 2:21 approx.
Can I replace it with Plate 4x4 ? Thaks.
I’m curious why people have started calling me Jacob. I’m Greg. Lol.
The plate is actually a minifigure base. I found it had a good amount of clutch power.
I’ll redo the video as I’ve had some feedback like yours on it. Thanks.
@@GJBricks Sorry Greg.
How do you get started - the footage is so dark and so fast it’s impossible to see what’s you are doing. We’ve tried pausing the video, but can’t get precisely the frame we want when your hand is in the way. So we’ve got the motor, and you appear to put 1 x 4 plates on ieach side. What do they fit to?
I made a similar setup with 5 carriages but it struggles round corners if it's slow
Nice tutorial on how to make it motorized. Useful in a Lego City if you want another awesome train in your city to move by itself.
Yeah! Totally agree. A shame LEGO didn’t make it slightly more motorisation friendly but guess it would’ve pushed the price up. At least they designed it to work on tracks
@@GJBricks Yeah that's true.
How to I get the motor To run .... what blue tooth do I need ?
So I am a complete Lego novice....
I don't want to spend $160 on the other set just for the motor and stuff. How can I get whatever you didn't put in the BrickLink list, including the track, ideally from BrickLink so it's one order...
I just added these extra items to the list now, so I will explain my steps from the start (you may have already done some of these).
1) click on bit.ly/2V4zze7 (the parts list XML file in the description of this video)
2) copy the xml text but EXCLUDE the first 3 lines. So the first line you select should be and select all the text down to the bottom which is also
3) login to bricklink and click the "want" tab
4) click "upload" in top right of page and then click "upload bricklink XML format"

6) paste selected xml text into "copy and paste here" window
7) click "proceed to verify items"
8) scroll to bottom and select "add to wanted list"
9) now you have to add the extra items. 1 x motor, 1 x battery box with bluetooth, 4 wheels and 2 axles. In the search bar at the top of the page type in the following;

and click enter / select the motor
10) select "add to my wanted list" and select your wanted list that you created. I selected "75955 - Hogwarts Express motorised powered up upgrade" as that's what I called this list
11) confirm the "quantity" tab is set to "1" and then select "add to my wanted list"

bb0892c01 - you require 1
55423c01 - you require 4

13) you should really confirm all these parts and quantities, but these are the parts and quanitites I found I needed when looking at the 60197 passenger train set inventory on bricklink. You can do this by typing "60197" in the search bar at the top of the bricklink page. Then selecting "60197 passenger train" and once it loads the page, select "Set Inventory"
Hope this helps
Where is the website to get the list of parts he mentions in the video?
Thank you for this video! Very well done!
You’re welcome. Hope it’s useful. Do you have this set?
No...I really want it tho. Might get it.
@@mocmedia6179 It's a beautiful train and a fun build! Lots, and lots of scope for improvement too
Hey the video was great
Glad you liked it! Hope it helped. Think I need to do an updated version as there’s been a couple of questions about it.
Hey... nice video.. the one bit I'm struggling to work out is the base of the train cart. You just swapped them over?? Is it just a duplicate of the parts in 75955?
Basically yes, but have to change the lower bit to sit on the motor properly, and also deal with the "pin" that comes up from the motor.
Awesome! Very nice motrization!
Thanks! Was good to work through it and finish it - might have left it as it was otherwise. You’ve got this now don’t you?
I haven’t actully got this but i got a moc one! It’s not my moc but it looks realy good and acurate! The original creators name is Zanthera and i haven’t got premission yet to use it in my video.
Nice, very nice! We also dream of having train sets in our city. No funds yet. :)
Thanks! It's a fantastic looking train when it's in motion! And don't rush for trains! They will consume you - and all your spare cash and city space! You saw my last city update has a raised area to accommodate it!
@@GJBricks Yeah, I noticed it. Thanks for the tip! :)
Well done.
Thank you! I hope it helped!
Wow that set is awesome we love anything Harry Potter 😁👍👫🎄🎄
So do I! I've deliberately steered clear of the other sets and minifigures but that might change in the new year's sales!
Do you have this set and have you motorized it if you do?
I cannot read the brick list... What should I open it with? Thanks
I’ve got a video explaining how to import files to BrickLink that will hopefully help you: czcams.com/video/y0DcsaJ_Who/video.html
Great, thank you so much!
You’re most welcome! Hope it helped you get your train moving!
Well I bought everything from your list, but it is different from yours in the video. I needed different wheels as well, so I don't know why I got the small one. Everything looks different... Sad
I just re-checked the list and I've got to apologise. The wheel was incorrect as you said. Somehow the list had reverted to an old version. The correct part is: www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=55423c01&idColor=11#T=C&C=11
I can only apologise for that screw-up. As I said in the video I'd used another donor set (60197). I added these in as a couple of people had emailed me asking for those added.
@@GJBricks don't worry the person that got this swapped the wheels from Hogwarts express... Still the part that the wheels go(don't remember the name 🤣) looks different from yours, as you put something on the side.
The person that got this as a gift as a good imagination and made it work, now she just has to buy those wheels and extra parts to cover the hub.
Thank you, but for the future make the video at normal speed, at least for people like me that has no imagination 🤣. Oh and thank you for Bricklink I had no ideia that existed
Thanks so much!
Hope it's useful for you. Love to see how you go if you build it!
I hope you or someone else can help me here. I got the powered up hub, motor and remote (so BT not IR). But the train wheels and "axel" doesn't come with the motor.
So I need to order these aswell. But which size are the "sticks/axels" and which train wheels should I go for (are they different from each other?).
Hope you can help. Cheers :)
Hey Kristian,
So the parts you need on bricklink are:
2x Black Technic, Axle 6 Long
4x Black Train Wheel RC Train
2x Black Train Motor 9V Decorative Side with Open Hub Points (fits RC Train Motor) [Optional]
I'll check my list as I thought I'd added them to it. Sorry about that.
Let me know how you go.
Greg
@@GJBricks Thanks Greg :)
So.. the 9V deco side was not on the list, but on the table on your video? ..just to clear that out.
It should have been. I’ll check that if not. You don’t actually need it but it looks odd without it
Great video! What's the yellow/orange piece? It's not in the parts list.
Can’t believe I missed that out! It’s a collectible minifigure base - I’ve got so many. But a 1x4 half studded plate would do. I’ll update it later. Sorry
Are the extra axel pins needed? They're not included already with the set?
Is the orange piece not needed? It's not on the inventory.
Hey Daniel, what pins do you mean? the 1x4 technic plates? They replace the 1x3 that's in the set to stop the move. And the Orange plate I mentioned I used to hold it in place. And you're right, I did miss that out. That's my mistake, thanks for pointing that out.
@@GJBricks the 1x4 plates make sense - but the pins you put in each end to attach them, can't you take those off the 1x3 plates and reuse them?
Thought maybe there was another part in there instead of the orange plate, thanks for clarifying
Daniel Stanton no because for some reason they don’t do the 1x4 with a round hole, one the cross hole. Unless I missed something but I couldn’t find it. Unless you you the 1x4 technic brick with round ends? I just didn’t like how thick that looks.
@@GJBricks thanks, I've ordered the parts, including the 4x3 orange plate, part number 88646, in red (also comes in black - there are fewer reds available), from Bricklink
Do you have a list of the blocks I need ?
Having issues using the upload file with bricklink. When I upload it says .XML is not a supported format. Is that new? Or is there a converter you use to get to one of the 4 supported formats listed on bricklink upload page.
That’s odd. I’ll have a look because it’s exported from bricklink.
I checked and you need to select the "Upload BrickLink XML format" option on their page
@@GJBricks awesome it works I just was doing it wrong! Thanks!
Nice
Thanks! Got to stay on the request videos! You got any interest in this train?
@@GJBricks yep because I don't have any Lego train i want to have it to use it in my animation
@@GJBricks can I have a shoutout
Awesome!
Hey, do I need to buy new wheels for the tender as well? I am a bit confused. They weren’t in your parts list so I didn’t buy any different wheels.
Alyssa Samways hey Alyssa, the description mentions I used parts from another train that had the axles and wheels included. If you’re buying the motor, you’d need the wheels too. I can add them to the parts list if you like?
Ah, thanks, sorry I missed over that part! I’ve purchased the wheels and axels online now, just have to wait a few more days to finish my train ;) thanks for replying!
It's ok. I wish I'd said it in the video. I mentioned where I'd gotten the motor from but completely forgot those parts were extra for those not starting with a donor set. Let me know how you go
@@GJBricks I purchased your list that says it includes the wheels and axels, but I can't figure out how to attach the listed wheels?
Nice Video
Nice comment ;)
Hoping it helps people when they're thinking of doing this. Or maybe even inspire them to get the set so they can do it!
Someone should fix the funnel
Ok but I want the step by step on how to put the parts together! If we buy the parts how are we supposed to know how to put it together???
I put the parts together in the video to show you
@@GJBricks Yes... at mach speed and not very close up. I slowed it down all the way and got it eventually but it was very annoying rewinding.
I apologise for the speed. I’ll try to do a new one frame by frame. I have upgraded my setup since that video just not had a chance to reshoot
Will you need any extra pieces
Yes. A few. There’s a parts list in the description (and a video link to how to import it to bricklink - not my fault they made it hard). I tried to limit the parts but to there just aren’t some in the box you need to finish it sadly. You could improvise a few and things like the black dots for coal aren’t essential.
Hi Greg another brilliant video where do I find the parts list for this please?
Mark
Thank you! And the parts list is linked in the description, but it’s this one which you can import to BrickLink: bit.ly/2V4zze7
Many thanks for your help 😊👍
You are welcome! Let me know how you go 😃
I’d best get cracking on some more train tutorials. They are one of my most popular videos.

@@GJBricks how do I do this ... the link doesn’t work or is that how it show look like .... a fax page from the 1980s
Cool
I think I might have missed something, but who is Caz?
Hey Tina, that’s a fair question. There’s should have been an info card that appeared in the top right - although I think on some devices it can be temperamental. Caz runs a channel called BlockHeadUk
It is impossible to follow the speed. Way to fast
To bad it is blurry and sped up so fast you can not see what is being done.
You’re the first to say that. Sorry it’s not good enough quality for you. I’ll try and reshoot it when I get time
