    For a gameboy game this is pretty impressive. The animation, the amount of game available and just the whole trick it does with the classic arcade game. It seems like its had more effort put in than super mario land 2 (i know mario land 2 came out before this, but what is essentially just a reboot of a non-mario game its quite amazing.)
    This is also what I want Mario vs DK to return to. A puzzle platformer. The minis were nice at first but then pulled a rabbids move and centralised it too much to the point it took over the entire core gameplay and changed it.

    • @LateOne15
      @LateOne15 Před 6 lety +3

      The first Mario vs. DK played almost not e for note like this, with new mechanics/stage designs thrown in. The later sequels to that were the ones where everything changed.

    • @ZipplyZane
      @ZipplyZane Před 3 lety

      @@LateOne15 When they moved to the DS, they wanted touch controls, sot hey focused on the mini-Marios and made it more like a Lemmings game.
      Puzzle platformers are nice, and I wish Nintendo would make more. The closets we have now is Toad Treasure Tracker, but they specifically make it where he can't do platforming, as he can't jump! (or equivalent. It's more like Load Runner 3D).

    One thing I adore about the game is how much of the story of the game is told in the background. Where the exits are, what you can see in the distance of the cutscenes. Sure approaching world 1 you can see a city, but the final boss gauntlet is visible from soooooo far away. For a game with no actual story, it does tell a globe trotting adventure.

    On a regular Game Boy or anything that's not a Super Game Boy (e.g. Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Player), since it has no SNES sound channels, Pauline's "Help! Help!" screams are changed to an 8-bit "Eee-YAAA! Eee-YAAA!" and they are a lot higher pitched compared to this.

    I loved this game when i was little. It sucks I don't have it any more. I'm thinking about getting it on virtual console for 3ds, but at the same time, I really really wished they'd let gameboy games have the option to act as if they were on the super gameboy or not, because I would much really rather have color...

    So... We have Donkey Kong in the arcade, which introduced us to the standard platformer concept. Then Donkey Kong '94 here, which introduced an Action-Puzzle twist to the game. This then carried over to Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which introduced escort puzzles as pre-boss minigames that decide how much health Mario has in the fight by how many Mini-Marios get to the toybox, made possible by them loyally following the real Mario around. ...And then we had the rest of the Mario vs. DK games which focused entirely on the escort puzzles, but with Mario only appearing in cutscenes, the Minis have no sense of direction and so they wander aimlessly.

    Actually, there's a couple of reasons to play it on the Super Game Boy over the Game Boy Player. DK 94 was the flagship title for the Super Game Boy, showing off all of the features, such as the custom backgrounds, added colour, and extra sound layers. The Game Boy Player doesn't add in those features, and basically runs the game as if it was in a GBA SP. I also prefer the SNES controller over the Gamecube controller for games like this.

    Donkey Kong '94 was the first of many Game Boy games that included color graphics when played on the Super Game Boy (or almost any Game Boy player made later on). The first gen Pokemon games were the same way. While they were still black and white on the classic Game Boy, they had the programming to add color when used on a device that supported it.

    1. Paulina's screams become quieter and quieter (and eventually mute) the more you die (as DK is getting further and further away).
    2. Mario's comical reactions to injury (fire, getting squashed, fall damage, "bats"). There's also getting hit holding a key.
    3. Definitely enemies. Those "Rappies" go nuts if you're hold a hammer (no clue why). Later on, "certain animals" get very upset if you snag them by the tail. "Mummies" lol...

And there should be NO downloading of ROMS for this game. Even after all these years, this game is so awesome that Nintendo deserves your money for making it.

    Just a heads up ProtonJon, they used the tightrope again in Mario vs. Donkey Kong, a VERY similar game to this one. I honestly though it was the first game to use it as well as other mechanics (like the handstand to high jump maneuver, getting the key to end the level only, the trashcans and trash shredders used) but wow this has been an eye-opener. This almost looks like an early version of that game just because of how similar it is. Great video dude!
