  • Following a complete rebuild between 1996 & 2004, on the East Lancashire railway, the 'Duke of Gloucester' steam locomotive is seen in this clip being trialed, prior to its return to mainline service. Apologies for the sound quality on the clip and note it was shot in 4/3 format.

Impressing pictures with stunning sound, especially the pictures of the preparation, very rare to see on YT. Thank you for this gorgeous upload.

A genuine piece of history there Hugh. Seems like a lifetime ago now though doesn't it? Chris

Very interesting information on the most interesting locomotive other than the Red Devil.

Thanks once again Rainer. It comes from at extensive archive of similar footage, that I intend to upload over the next year or so.
    Best regards, Hugh.

Yes Its surprising how quickly things pass into history Chris & how history comes back to haunt us, as the controversy surrounding the East Lancs war weekend proves.
    Hugh.

Google David Wardale. A fascinating story. I have actually stood next to the Red Devil, stored under a bridge in Cape Town.

I thought that name board said "THE MID GAY SCOT" for a moment.

Google "Red Devil Steam" and the first result should tell all!
