  • This was a competition flight from Spanhoe Airfield in the UK. It was the first time I used the new Insta 360 and was a test of that camera.

    Sound and video both improved Darren and beutiful UK day. Never lose sight of the privilege of free flight like meeting up with a glider pilot and working silently as a team to cloudbase. Smashing that!

      You are TOTALLY right Billy... working together and zooming up in tandem, it's a wonderful feeling.

    Nice one. Enjoyed the varying angles the camera was able to show giving a nice overall picture of the flight.

    The sound is Absolutely perfect 😎👍
    The video was better too, loved being able to see the other hang-gliders and sailplane,
    I'd love to chain together thermals like that, hopefully one day 🤞

    Nice looking conditions over there, looks pretty. You're having all the fun!
    Gotta watch out for those Insta360 cameras, I just got a new X3 as my X2 fell off the stick while I was paragliding...LOL. I highly advise getting the lens covers, they're much cheaper to replace than the lenses should they scratch. For a mount I use an old Flytec instrument mount that I stuck a carbon rod on, works great.
    Cheers and happy flying!

      Felix, the moral of that X2 loss story is.... don't fly paragliders!! ;-) I have attached my X4 to the glider by a bit of string, just in case of such mishaps. Again, I have used an old hangglider mount and a steel rod to mount mine on too. The part that failed was the old mount, not part of the actual X4 setup. As for lenses - I'm totally with you there. But the X4 comes with removeable lens guards and I would not fly without them.

    Hey Darren, may I ask you 2 questions? 1.) Do you have that external mic on it with the two kind of boxes (Im guessing, thats what got disconnected)? I just bought an X4 and it only records wind sound. 2.) Do you use a power bank, or stop recording at some points? Great vid as always, though, you outhermalled that glider so nicely !

    • @MooSurfer
      @MooSurfer  Před měsícem +2

      Hey! So... 1. Yes I have an external mic on. For this flight I had a mic wire going up an upright (or downtube), then coming down my harness and to a wind muffled mic on my harness. The mic lead got disconnected when the camera fell off and I was fiddling with it, so yes, that's why no sound. I have also experimented now with just having the wind muffled mic near the camera to save all the wires - it works nearly as well. 2. I don't use a power bank. I turn the camera off and on when I think there is something interesting or I have something to say. This not only saves power, but also memory on the card and most importantly cuts down a LOT on time spent editing.

    Great quality image! Were you recording in 8K mode, and then exported to 2K?

    • @MooSurfer
      @MooSurfer  Před měsícem +1

      No - I recorded in 5.7k and exported it. I haven't even tried 8k mode yet!

    • @EphiBlanshey
      @EphiBlanshey Před měsícem

      @@MooSurfer Nice! Would love to see the quality difference in 8k. It should also allow you to zoom in more closely on nearby thermalling gliders, which is currently a bit limited using the 5.7k resolution.

      There are two schools that are relatively close to you that I would recommend: 1. Green Dragons: www.greendragonsairsports.co.uk/. 2hrs 20mins from you. They have really good training slopes and also parallel towing to get you going quickly on those early flights. They will take you to Elementary Pilot level on their hills, then take you to a bigger hill for a 1 day conversion when you are ready for the Club Pilot level. 2. Derbyshire Flying Centre: d-f-c.co.uk/ 2hrs 40 mins from you. They do training in the Peak District where there are a variety of hills, low and high. They will train you to Elementary Pilot and then Club Pilot level on these hills. Both schools have a history of getting pilots qualified and both are run by friends of mine. So if you contact either of them - tell them I sent you! Please let me know how you get on...

      @@MooSurferThank you Darren, I'll look into it now 👍

    • @MooSurfer
      @MooSurfer  Před měsícem

      @@charvais I may have a third option for you that is closer to you... just looking into it and asking about it with my friend who runs it... I'll post back to you shortly

    • @MooSurfer
      @MooSurfer  Před měsícem

      ok - so the third option is 1hr 22 mins from Milton Keynes. This one involves learning hanggliding via aerotow. If you learned this way and then wanted to jump off a hill you would need to do a short conversion. Also the same the other way around, obviously. This is a club and operates near Cambridge - called Red Kite Tandem Hanggliding experience. As the name suggests, with this one you fly with an instructor by your side (initially at least). Details can be found here: www.bhpa.co.uk/schools/schools.php?region=all&category=hg#schools or give Tony Smith a call on Mob: 07875 489 399. He knows you may call.
