The world of Beethoven is stunning enough......but this ladiy's piano playing is out of this world. !
Give me a week to practive and I'd do even better. You'll have to tell me which key is middle C first though.
Maestra Grimaud is out of this world. She plays with a special neatness and touches deepest fibers. Thanks for sharing this jewel.
My dear, you are an angel! Completely out of this world. Thank you from the bottom of my 83 year old heart. May God bless you richly. 😊
My sentiments exactly, and I am 83 years also.
I worship the ground upon which Mme. Grimaud walks.
He already has!! ✝✝✝.....
The more I listen to this, the deeper is my awe.
Heaven! Beethoven would've been immensely proud to hear how much intelligence and feeling Grimaud puts into this. Just feel like she's talking to Beethoven directly as she plays this -- with a very modern sensibility, which he would've certainly shared. Excellent partnership with Eschenbach - he conducted this perfectly to showcase her and maximize the relationship between piano and orchestra
I got out of wrist surgery Friday, 2 days ago, where they re-broke & re-set my radial bones & put in a plate, screws. When the nerve block wore off I was in FREAKING AGONY for a day or 2; up all hours dragging myself slowly from room to room, moans involuntarily leaking from me the whole night long; I had no idea what I was doing as I staggered slowly from room to room (THANK GOD I live alone... I would've been embarrassed to have anyone there to witness me in this pit of my life). Anyway I must've played Helene's Beethoven Piano Concerto #4 here a good 50 times (at least) all through the night & following day; how very comforting it was, spirited, lifting me up, a joy; she saw me through the worst (so far) of my weekend travails; may GOD bless her... what a brilliant cutie-pie; watching closely how this beautiful piece so transported her, & in turn me, for I felt a tiny part of that passion, which eased my mind through the worst of my pain. THANK YOU HELENE; THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSPIRATION, for allowing it to be a beacon to me and all the world lucky enough to witness this performance!! It was fresh to me every time; I'll always be grateful for being able to watch and hear your glorious music this weekend when I so needed it... -L.
Just revisiting, 5 months later; still can't use my hand much... but this music still a balm, still fresh, still an exquisite joy. The drugs they gave me; utterly useless; sugar pills maybe.
Praying for you ❤
@@kathycollins3043 - Thank you so much, Kathy; all prayers gratefully accepted! You pray for me & I'll continue to pray for Ukraine.

Praying for you too, sincerly.
Cannot have enough of this magic (not only the music, but also the smile).
If there was a ranking for youtube presentations of classical music, this is a candidate for number one. Hélène Grimaud is a Greek goddess that plays piano. Beethoven's concerto no. 4 is one of the best ever. The best performance because Hélène is much more than a virtuoso. She is one with music and totally dedicated to what she plays. Finally, the best filming with superposition of plans of executant, orchestra and audience which is difficult but results marvelously.

There is so much in the world today that makes me angry, sad or unhappy. This is the antidote.
A human performance so brilliant, it's hard to comprehend.
Thank God for Beethoven, and performers such as Hélène Grimaud to play Beethoven so brilliantly!
Grimaud better than Yuja for playing Beethoven.
This concerto is also according to Grimaud the one closest to her heart. Thanks Ludwig.

I absolutely love Helene's artistic passion and magical performance, she is totally 'connected' with Beethoven and the result is magnificent!
Just as she is totally connected with the rest of the world music!
Beethoven knew something nobody else knew. I think Helene Grimaud picked up on it . Incredible.
Highly recommend Mr. Gould’s recording. He brings transcendence to everything he does. God bless!

@@johnnichols2088 As you have probably heard or read, Grimaud is considered the female Glenn Gould. Both have high verbal intelligence and lightning speed articulation of the English language. (despite Grimaud's native tongue is not English), including Gould's facial and mouthing movements in Grimaud. She stated in one of the interviews, that her piano idols are Gould and then Horowitz.
numéro de cirque cette composition ! pauvre Hélène !
Very strongly into the spirit and ethos of Beethoven throughout. Thank you Ms Grimaud and all concerned with putting this together and for the download.
So beautifully played. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍💖
Merci musique.
What a joy of an audience. And not a mobile phone in sight.

A beautiful woman, a grand piano and Beethoven...
What more can be said!
One more reason to know that music is the greatest form of art.
Timing phrasing the complete conversing between pianist & orchestra
Beautiful woman, great pianist. Thanks, Life, for all your gifts.
Helene Grimaud is so brilliant in Beethoven's piano Concerto no.4. It is so enchanting, so divine, so beautiful. The Paris Orchestra conducted by Christoph Eschenback is so exceptional. It is so marvelous, so romantic, so beautiful. Helene is an extraordinary pianist who is so fit to work with her sublime fingers with Beethoven's revolutionary music. Indeed, Beethoven is the master of all masters. I listen to his music with deep emotions and with immense interest. He will continue to have profound impact on the succeeding generations. And Helene is so talented an artist. Beethoven would have been pleased with her performance.
She plays like every note is the most important note she has ever played
alan dougan. With Beethoven every note is as you say important. And it's as important in how it's played as well, and Ms. Grimaud is right on the money every time.
My goodness, the look on her face! She is totally invested in this performance. It's incredible to witness such artistry, and commitment to excellence. She's absolutely magnificent..best I've heard since Argerich.
What would the world be like without Beethoven?
A bit quieter, maybe. But this is great.
She's the most intensely focused pianist I've ever seen. Utterly absorbed. Truly an exceptional talent.
BEAUTIFULL dancing from key to key, and passage to passage! Beatifil pianist in addition! Bob R.
What beautiful music to prepare my supper by. I keep coming in to the room when I hear the music's intensity. Her fingers and hands, what music she weaves...
I utterly agree with you.
Beethoven: peerless. Period. Helene Grimaud: perfect.
Has there ever been such a combination of artistry and extraordinary beauty in one person? I'd like to see her.
Helene Grimaud is an amazing pianist.
I do not know how many times I listen to this concerto, but this time I heard it as a brand new experience, Grimaud is incredible. Today the technique of playing is as a given, but the soul is not technique it is rarely appears only in deep artists such as Grimaud.
I do so agree with you, music performed without soul is worthless & Helene brings so much it tugs at our emotions like no other pianist can!
I don’t remember an occasion that from the very first moment the pianist touched a key, I knew something magical and extraordinary was going to happen! This was so wonderful!! I so wished I could have be there!
Thank you
Thank you for the music......... Greetings from northern Sweden

Absolutely wonderful. Makes you forget for a while all the Covid-19 misery. Thank you Beethoven, thank you Helene, thank you Eschenbach, thank you orchestra.
AND the Beeb's film director and camera crew for such a marvelous opportunity to see musicians emotional attachment to their music so expertly
Helene is always a wonder.
The princess of the piano, Helene Grimaud my love: I saw she played this concerto, and though I didn't remember the piece (The Emperor is my favourite), the mere fact that Helene Grimaud played it made me click on the video. Then , some hacknied music in the piece, orchestral parts that I recognize and now remember only too well, to my chagrin. But the piano performs magic, as usual with Helene Grimaud. And I call inwardly:.Yes!!
Madame Grimaud, what an outstanding rendition of this gem!!!
Your complete command of the concerto almost makes me think that it was actually written FOR YOU! Your deep passion shown in such a humble way, without the overly dramatic that some performers sometimes put up, makes it only a pleasure to drink in the beauty... both of the music and you. It is a truly wonderful experience to enjoy along with you. I thank you. And I thank God for beauty such as this.
And bravo to the orchestra and conductor too!
Magnificent. Reminds me of Francios du Toit. Beethoven's spirit sits on his shoulders when he performs "The Master's Works" and whispers his satisfaction once Francios plays the closing notes. I suppose a similar situation arises with this virtuoso too.

Beautiful woman. Magnificent performce. Thilling piano playing!
I saw Helene perform years ago for the 1st time, and realized she was the real deal. So many times I've made special trips to San Fran. Davies Hall to see her perform, as I like to sit right behind the orchestra. Once, after she had concluded, the guy next to me showed me a copy of her book "Wild Melodies", about her work with wolves. They say "music hath charms to calm the wild beast" and in her case, it actually is true. Some great camera mixes and ECUs here (Extreme Close Ups) which also adds to the heft of this video. Bravo and Bravaa to all involved !
I once heard someone play practice this masterpiece while walking on the streets of Edinburgh... I stood there listening under the rain. Magical moment
Hard to believe this was just over 20 years ago...bravissimo!
I heard her play this concerto at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in 2009. It was...transcendent. I've always loved the Beethoven Fourth Concerto; now I'm in love with Helene Grimaud playing it.
This is Perfection, there are now worldly words to describe it. Mr. Eschenbach follows Miss Grimaud to perfection. Thank you so much.
Love her interpretation of this piece. Her modesty shows when she first comes out and takes a bow. But we all know it’s going to be great!
My favourite recording of the 4th ever.. sublime! ❤
It seems almost impossible that anyone could have composed such sublime music. The execution is almost perfect. What would Beethoven not have done to hear this performance! thank you with all my heart.
Beethoven would have been exhilarated to be able to hear dogs barking for all it mattered...
I wonder if he really heard it in his head the way it was later performed, or if he would have liked some nuances differently. Maybe, if you go deaf and could hear before, you remember some sounds differently?
@@Fidi987 I don't know if it's possible to understand what's going on in the mind of a genius.
@@Fidi987 . Beethoven wasn't deaf when composing all seven of his concertos.
He became profoundly deaf later in life.

When I was an undergraduate student at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, I would go to concerts every week given by the College of Music. This is where I learned to appreciate the classical music of the great composers Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Vivaldi, Wagner, Grieg, Strauss, and many more.
No more to say, just GREAT
Does anyone notice how subdued the normally lively Proms audience is and how particularly intense the general vibe is ? This was the evening of September 11th 2001. I heard the performance live on BBC Radio 3 and I thought it was the perfect piece for the moment. Such an intense and emotionally charged performance from Maestros Grimaud and Eschenbach and OdP, bravo ! Thanks for posting.
They played the Eroica (2 mvt) at the start and CE said a few words. With hindsight they probably should have cancelled the concert but everyone must have been too dazed to know what to do.
I agree with you. in Japan, JST、4:04分
Thank you Helen for this extraordinary interpretation of Beethoven's Concerto 4 for piano and orchestra; Bravo.
The more you hear the more you're lost in the background.. The 2nd movement is par excellence... Beethoven must be satisfied in his grave on having such a wonderful performer following his legend..
in radio this morning, so encouraging
How delicate she is with every note. An eccellente interpretation of one of the greatest concerts written for the piano. The dialogue between piano and orchestra is extremely integrated. One of the most romantic of Beethoven concerto's. If you listen carefully you will find Chopin style in many thematical moments. Cadenza very delicate. Beethoven a genius...only that.
I agree, however I’d like to point out that Beethoven came before Chopin. Elements of Beethoven’s style reside in Chopin’s music, not the other way around.
The orchestra overwhelmed her. She hasn't got it
Me too! I’d like to see her.
@@thomaselliott573 - Perhaps what you need is the application of some Q-Tips to your ears... don't push them all the way in; go partly in and twirl them slowly to truly remove that obfuscating rubbish that's no doubt blocking your appreciation of this divine meeting of orchestra and soloist.
Interesting about the presentiment of Chopin. Romanticism being born.
Spellbinding rendition.
I am already pleased simply by her modest demeanor in approaching the piano on stage, with a humility and demureness, dressed elegantly in dignified attire, unlike many young women performers I sadly see on today's concert stages, who are dressed in attire befitting a barroom audience, in provocative gowns revealing all of their body from strapless bossoms, to mini skirts so tight and scant as to leave little to the imagination. Here one can concentrate on the Beauty and power of Beethoven's ideas and imagination reflected in her rendering of this masterpiece for its own sake (not seeking the titilation of mere lasivious audiences). Thank you Ms. Grimaud for your integrity to your Art. You have made Herr Beethoven very happy, I am sure.
You're one love with people, a love as a musician.

The opening phrase is so full of feeling and so delicate, i could watch that in an endless loop.
Allegro moderato is so fantastically beautiful (and very difficult to play)!
Rondo vivace, just amazingly complicated to play, such a treat beyond words to see a performance like this! Thank you to all: Madame Grimaud, conductor and excellent orchestra! (from Canada)
This is one of my favorite classical music videos. The quality of the music, the performance, and the video itself is superb. I think it was fitting that this was performed on the evening of 9/11 because 9/11 showed some of the worst that human beings can do, whereas this video shows civilization at its height. Evil may drag us down at times but here's an example of something (Beethoven's music, as interpreted by great musicians) that lifts us up and is part of our humanity that is worth fighting for.
September 11th was not the worse thing that ever happened but as it was an American tragedy it has become synonymous with evil.

I have heard many versions of this, my favourite piano concerto, but this one is unique. Her interpretation is so beautiful and heartfelt. Her technique is something else!
I am guessing that you must play yourself. Generally when people mention technique they are talking about keyboard pyrotechnics, but there is so much more. In this performance her control over the volume and attack of each note can be breathtaking.
She has a feather touch, doesn't she? Makes her more agile on the keyboard IMHO.
i thought exactly the same. i always like claudio arrau but when i heard Grimaud interpreation, just unreal!

I, too, fall into the idolization of this remarkable pianist, much like the shot of the three gentlmen in the front row entranced by her playing in the 1st movement. She is a remarkable artist and nature lover with her love and protection of wolves.
