In this overnight adventure, I head up to Mt Charleston for a winter wild camp under a tarp for the first time. It's was a bit of a challenge and learning experience but a cool time! Enjoy!
Backpacking With Jason Thanks Jason, I really appreciate it coming from a seasoned camper😎 You’ve got a cool channel buddy, I’ll be checking out some of your vids to get some pointers👍
hi Alex! late at night here in Argenitina and get on your video because i was looking for some advise on going camping into the wild .. and i have to say man..Extraordinary the way you show , very natural !!! kepp on doing stuff like these!!! buena vida amigo!!!!
I love how you show your mistakes and feel like I can totally relate to your experience and skill level. Great video. Being alone in the dark is one of my own fears. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. lol Cheers.
Jeff Green Lol! Glad you liked it. I have to say, it’s a bit less scary sleeping in a tent than under a tarp for me. Being enclosed makes a difference. Thanks for watching the vid! 👍👍
Waypoint Outdoor Adventures Thanks bud, I appreciate it! I’ll be watching more of your vids as soon as I get back home from my trip. Looking forward to it...
Oh Alex. I was yelling at my screen, 'Your tarps facing the wrong way !!' I was telling my daughter, 'He aint gonna make it to morning. The winds gonna make sure of that.'😋 Wind was blowing up the hill and essentially making your tarp a sail. If you had the wall facing the opposite, the wind would have been blocked and you would have slept better. At least you got out and had an adventure from which tou learned several things. Great video and im now a subscriber. Looking forward to more vids ! 👍
Curious if you were shaken awake by the wind or got cold? There are many tarp configurations that will help with that, however you may need to pack in a dedicated ground sheet, and/or contend with condensation if too enclosed. Either way, I commend your high spirits and willingness to brave the elements!
Eric Logan Hi Eric! I appreciate the follow and comment. Yup the wind kept waking me up. I stayed warm with my sleep system so that was good. I definitely need to work on my tarp skills, configurations and such because mine are pretty limited, for sure lol...
Hey Alex, I'm enjoying your vidoes, watched a few of yours when you were in the UK, I have the Alocs alcohol burner, it's a great bit of kit for the price, always good to put a bit of alcohol around the rim when it's cold as it will light and bloom up better and don't snuff the flame with the lid with the rubber ring in... use the proper lid. Looked like you were on quite a slope there 😁 done it myself numerous times... looks flat but isn't. Enjoyed this. Lee.
Burton Outdoors Glad you’re enjoying the videos! Thanks for the pointers on the stove. I didn’t know that and makes sense! Unfortunately the terrain around there was somewhat steep, that was the flattest I could find in between two trees. The camera optics also made it seem a bit worse than it was. As long as I wasn’t tossing and turning it wasn’t too bad, lol. Just subscribed to your channel as well! Can’t wait to watch some videos!
@@alexonthemountain8343 Hey thanks for the sub, there's a mixed bag on my channel but I'm sure some of the camping ones you may enjoy. Happy Christmas and have a fantastic New Year. Lee
I get it with the fear of wild cats. When I through hike in Tennessee and Georgia they have wild boars that will charge you! I’ve been lucky so far. In all likelihood you’ll always be fine. Make sure you use a bear canister or hang your food up high
Thanks Graham! I know what you mean bud… Camping in the US, especially out West where there are lots of bears and mountain lions, can make you sweat a bit at times. That’s probably one of the comforts I like the most about camping in the UK. I’m actually planning a trip there within the next month or two and do plenty of wild camping... Cheers 🍻
AS THE CROW FLIES HIKING Thanks buddy, I really appreciate it! Yup I really liked the sleeping pad, I also forgot to mention that it’s not very noisy, unlike the NeoAir XTherm, which helps if you’re a light sleeper 👍

I agree… I’m more and more concerned these days of mountain lions myself, especially where I live now on the Central Coast of California (moved here a year ago). I’ve had two encounters with cougars here this year alone. So far so good, they just ran away and seemed to be wary of me, but still made me nervous as heck. There have been quite a few reports of them recently around here. As for camping, I think they would be less likely to attack someone in a tent than under a tarp. I haven’t hear of cougars attacking tents yet, bears yes though. Black bears are typically not an issue as long as food is stored a ways from camp.
@@alexonthemountain8343 Here in Yakima, WA it's the little things I'd be concerned about crawling over me. Fun idea: Timelapse film cowboy camping and see what comes to visit in the night.
I also have this tarp and let me tell ya, it's not waterproof after 2 days of rain... found out the hard way when I woke up with a puddle on my sleeping bag (using a hammock) good for a few hours in the rain but nothing serious

I prefer the illusion of security a tent provides. I mean, mountain lions can't operate zippers, right? (No thumbs)

I have that tarp, it’s great value and I’ve found it to be fully waterproof after using it in some heavy rain.
