    I like this video because it's steadily throwing light on everything: melody, chord melody, comping, scales and how to play the whole song. Thanks.

      You're super welcome. My goal with this series was to take a deep look at the elements of improvisation on a bunch of standards. More to come like this!

    Great method for learning tunes. Jazz is a life time pursuit.

      Thanks! The method is constantly evolving too. Teaching improvisation is always difficult but even more so through asynchronous video. Thanks for watching!

    For anyone going through the comping section, at the start of the second A section the chord chart doesn't match the Eb6, and the Cm6 is one fret off. But excellent video, it's really helping me get a grasp on these substitutions and how things relate. I'm sure I'll be able to recognize them faster as I practice. I would love to see a video on Lady bird, or Blue Bossa.

      @15gchu ah so sorry about those errors. This was the first video I ever made. More recent efforts are of a more consistent quality haha. Glad you were able to get something out of it. There's lots more on these subjects on the channel. Thanks so much for the feedback! I'll have to come back to this series soon.

    It’s like talking to someone. Which is what Jazz improvisation is trying to communicate to our listeners.

    I am really impressed how you have absorbed the Barry Harris thing, It's a lot of information to translate into your playing but I can see the logic in it.

    Good morning, Man. Personally, I find your videos fantastic. You mentioned something at the beginning of this video, that I thought I may suggest to you. I always tell students to play as you speak. Most teachers (including yourself) don’t mention is breathing. Once I learned about circular breathing, I became aware of the importance of breathing. You can play all the notes you want, even correctly, and they may still sound as just correct notes, and not say anything. Phrasing has to do so-much with communication, it’s unbelievable. All I’m trying to say is include what you share, especially the Barry stuff (I too am an avid follower), is the importance of breathing. This way you can say what you want to say so much more clearly. Continue to be Blessed, and keep sharing.

      @dsg_studio  Před 2 měsíci

      This is excellently put! It's very true that guitarists especially forget to breathe when we play. I'll have to remember to mention this point when I get around to making a video about rhythmic phrasing and pulse. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Glad your enjoying my work!

    I really enjoyed your videos I watched so far! Some of this is still going over my head, me not being a Jazz Player, but I will trying to get some of the techniques and concepts into my Fingerstyle playing for sure :D. Would love to hear you talk about Solo Arcs (that graphic you briefly showed kinda blew my mind ) if you can, as that has demystified the whole "tell a story" thing everyone keeps talking about :D

    • @dsg_studio
      @dsg_studio  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for watching! I may do some videos in future breaking down some of these concepts for beginning improvisers. That'd probably be a good place to go over how to create a good solo arc. Something my teacher used to have me do is to listen to a solo that I'm intending to transcribe and draw the arc as I showed in that graphic. Thanks for the wonderful feedback!

    in bar 18 the actual chord played has the low tone on the 4th string at fret 13 (D#) rather than 10 as shown on the score ("this chord I really like")

    • @dsg_studio
      @dsg_studio  Před 9 měsíci

      Its possible there's an error in the score. Sometimes these things slip by me. Thanks for having such a keen eye!
