this is so surreal seeing one of the people known for Japanese horror literally react to cats and on top of that get scared by Azumanga Daioh of all shows
The scenario. Imagine what Ito would do with the EXACT same scenario, and it starts to make sense.
@@aradraugfea Yeah, I think he's got that storyteller-hat on permanently, so he's always thinking of what's happening and of what's _actually_ happening.
It's interesting how Azumanga Daioh built up a decent amount of suspense/intrigue in a subtle way in that scene. Compared to Bleach where you get all these stupid shots of Ichigo looking surprised and making sounds.

As much as I love his horror, I highly recommend his Cat Diary manga. It uses all the same tropes, pacing and build up of all his horror stories. Except the payoff is always some variation of "Yay! Kitties!" XD
It's a hilarious read for people that enjoy having their expectations screwed around with. lol

I'd mostly recommend the cat manga to folks who don't like extremely disturbing stuff but still want to get a taste of his art and writing style.

Junji Ito is one of those people with an incredible ability to conceptualize horror and separate it from reality. He's a normal person with a talent for generating the unsettling - just because he creates it doesn't mean he IS it.
I know this reply comes 2 y. later, but THIS! I wish more people understood this indeed: the fact that an author creates something doesn't mean they ARE it! 👍
It is nice to see he likes cutenesses in cats but evil at the same time. I remember reading his manga in my high school years and man that was pretty interesting to see all those swirls, balloons, and Holes into everyday life

Pretty sure when he says something's scary, he's just being polite, which is very Japanese, culturally. It's like if a master guitar virtuoso saw that you were passionate about playing guitar, and listened to you play. Even though he's way better than you, he'll still say you're really good.

I don't know what I expected him to be like but an adorable cat lover was one thing that didn't cross my mind. Like how such an adorable man can be a master of horror? I find the entire thing fascinating.
He is a nice man, also very outspoken about mangakas needing to get enough sleep and free time. Mangakas get overworked and develop health problems in their bodies and their minds. It even kills some people, like Miura creator of BERSERK. Miura had a crazy work schedule for years, never got enough sleep, couldn't go outside enough... Junji Ito therefore is very strong in his opinion that they should all try to maintain a good work-life balance and ESPECIALLY get enough sleep. He is a really sweet guy.

Junji Uti calling Azu Manga Daioh scary is a level of pureness I wasn't prepared for. This is making me realize that some of the best artists in the horror genre are the best because they're cowards. If you can find the frightening in the mundane then you can scare just about anybody.
