Will My Electric Hummer Motor Spin?! - DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE!

- Today its time to wire up the high voltage batteries to our Electric Hummer conversion. Working with high voltage DC Electricity is extremely dangerous. In todays Electric Humvee video we are going to install the VCU which gives throttle and gear selector commands to the inverter. Kind of important. When it comes time to wire up the batteries for real, we will have 450v with 100kWh worth of capacity. HUGE Thanks to Oshcut for laser cutting my mounts and battery box: www.Oshcut.com

The series that never stops giving! This is my fave thing on CZcams right now.
I can't wait to see this beast moving!

I’m so excited for the results
old theoretical videos, to MMDA videos to technical videos to this series that we always follow. We are quite the same interest. I hope I'll meet you sometime. Since I'm 15 I'm familiar of you.

Absolutely loving this series, man! Every episode has been a treat
Both of you are doing DIY car/motorcycle CZcams so we’ll. Can’t wait for the next episode from both of you!
When are we getting treats from you ? 🤣

This is honestly my favourite series on CZcams in the last 5 years. I’m not even joking. You have done an amazingly good job at recording all of this progress
Thank you!

Seeing him fail at first try, is the best thing ever. I mean, don t get me wrong, but when you re doing something so complex and everything works from the first try, it must be broken :)))
Programming taught me that, it applies to everything.
Thank you for this amazing series and for showing us the failures too, not only the good things coming.
It makes the whole series "human".
Underrated comment.
in programming it is always like if it compiles first try you did something wrong
Seeing Zach's face light up like a 6-year-old boy on Christmas morning when the motor started spinning was well worth the watch. Great job fellas. Looking forward to seeing how this awesome project reverses..... I mean moves forward.😂
This is the only series on CZcams I’ve been watching and following religiously where I look forward to every new episode. I can’t believe there’s so few people working with this type of tech but I hope your series inspires more.
Seeing zack wearing MKBHD's t-shirt, and making the best CZcams series EVER ! what else can I see in this world.

Could you imagine building your own electric vehicle just like building a pc!! I am excited for the future.
SOOOO many points here!!!
First: Your voice is SOOO smooth to listen to! You could be explaining the benefits of converting pig manure into electricity, and I'd be able to listen without considering the detriments of the smell at all!
Second: You have run into so many obstacles in this project, but not let a single one stop you from moving forward!
Third: You PREDICTED point #2 way up front by pointing out that this is the first time you've done this, and you EXPECTED there to be obstacles! None of these obstacles have unreasonably slowed you down, and you point out what you've LEARNED from each one of them!
In short, this has not only been a learning process for YOU, but for everyone that you're explaining the issues to! Very interesting to learn from each new obstacle AND accomplishment along the way!
Thanks for this! Keep us up on this project! Cant wait to see the finish product.
That MKBHD merch 🤜🤛
I love this series. The level of details that you show us is incredible. Thank you for this highly addictive content.
This series is getting addictive, thanks for the awesomeness zack ! Waitin for another visual treat 🤓
I absolutely love this project
I'm learning A LOT while enjoying so much this project, the absolute best on CZcams right now. Can't wait for first driving tests!!!
Zack's pure Joy and Enthusiam from the motor turning, might be exactly what I needed to get through the rest of 2021.
Nice.. Congrats Jerry! Every week I'm waiting for the video update about this project to be uploaded on this channel and now I feel so great and overwhelmed to see that you made it. That Spinning wheel will be the new start for the new life of that beast.
Later when I came home from the work, I'll show this video to my father and I'm pretty sure that he will feel the same to as yours 'cause he also have a restoration project for his 18 yrs old motorcycle. Keep it up Jerry. I'm your fan from the Philippines 🇵🇭
When he shows Jeremy putting the waterproof plug together, I fully expected to hear "Like a little lego" after he said "And connects with little pins inside of the inverter". It would have fit there just perfectly.
this series has been the best part of my mornings recently.
can’t wait for zach to floor it
This series is incredible. Love the seamless editing too - makes it feel like we’re working on this together with you
So stoked to see my two nicest electric vehicle channels do a collaboration !!
When these videos come out I just drop everything I do and watch them!! So cool and interesting. Love it!
As an electrical engineer, I'm impressed how much research you have put into this project, even going as far as knowing Heat shrink on a cable is for identification only, as its not designed as an insulator. Too many CZcams projects are done dangerously by amateurs. Huge thumbs up from me, loving this series
Yep, did you seem him use the proper ratchet/hydraulic crimpers a while back? Nobody else on CZcams gets that right
Thanks a ton for sharing!
That was a lot of joy to see the wheels moving!! Kudos. I'm keeping up with the series, to see this car moving.
That big smile on your face when it was about to turn on! Priceless!!!! Hats off and big respect!

Absolutely loving this, felt so happy seeing your project working!
This series has been total gold! Cant wait to see you finally get it rolling.
When you make the loom, if you do it yourself theres a lot of great advice online, but i reccomend talc then a fabric strip like fibreglass or a fireproof fabric cut into a tape size strip wrap it around and . Talc inside to stop chafing of cables the fireproof fabric around the entire loom, Then tape it up like a handle of a tennis racket for example then put it in convoluted tubing.
At the cable ends terminations etc. Use dielectric grease or at a punch vaseline use it around all your headlight connectors and every other electical termination or join. It will keep rust water and crap out of your connections.
Not sure about the High voltage side of things but in general 12/24v evert offroader ive ever rebuilt ive done the same and it protects the loom and everything else. Id assume dielectric grease would be ok just check the spec sheet.

What an epic series Zack. So fun watching you work this out. It’s going to be an amazing ride when you get it going.
This video was way too exiting! The problems that keep appearing are so frustrating, yet intriguing and exiting when you guys fix them.
hola
Congrats! Question: why did reverse still work even when forward was disabled? I would expect the VCU to disable both if it thought the brakes were engaged.
I came here to ask the same question. It doesn't make sense.
Cause the programmer didn't add another if condition.
Safety. It's common practice to back with your foot on the brake. (and torque is limited in reverse.) EVs aren't like ICE cars; they have almost zero rolling resistance from the motor + transmission, so without brake or motor torque, they roll very easily. With the brake at "100%", [in drive] road vehicle rules say it must not apply torque. (I call it the Prius Rule(tm).)
(and for the record, there are a lot of idiots that drive around with their foot on the brake.)
@@jfbeam wouldnt it be safer to have at least two steps in the break, fully pressing it down should not allow any movement, not even backwards (so you acidentally dont back anything over and can quickly stop)
@@albinekb ABS cars have for years had additional sensors to detetmine how hard and fast the Brake pedal is depressed. Fluid pressure transducers, pedal stroke (distance, direction, & speed.)
I've nothing to do with what you are building, but still I just smiled and felt satisfied watching the motor spinning. Love this series, and your effort is appreciated!!

Loving seeing this series! Great progress so far, really looking forward to seeing this beast go on road, and off.
Would an oil cooler for the diffs be needed considering how much more power will be going through them, and possibly higher speeds?

You were just like how a kid would react ie excitement on your face to see it turn "let's do it again" . So adorable and precious those moments ❤️😄
I would recommend going back through the wiring and add a waterproofing so that you can go through more water if something leaks into the passenger area. Might as well go all the way for future protection. Not to mention, making the top of the hummer a solar array (if there aren't plans already), get that passive charge going for emergency use and to increase range.
Solar panels on car roofs always sound like a great idea but it won't provide much charge to the batteries.
in addition to that add an straight horizontal wire being perpendicular to the forward motion of car. Add many of them in series and use like 20 m of wire. Then if the car moves in any direction except N-S or S-N it would generate potential difference. In best scenario when the car would be moving in an E-W or W-E direction it would cut a magnetic field of 50 micro Tesla and generate a highest potential difference of about 0.1V if car travels at 100m/s 😂😂.
I know that's highly inefficient that it won't be able to even turn on an LED but i just want to try this once, but i don't have anything to do that 🙂🙂
The solar panels would be better for the 12v system than the main battery.
@@kingarthurthe5th That's not a bad idea. Maybe you want some light, or to charge your phone without cutting into the car's main power reserve.
@@cnutsack Let's be honest here charging your phone wouldn't even make a dent in the main battery.

Hi Jerry, thanks and this video is interesting and can't wait for the next few ones. I have been following your Humvee videos and learning more on EV. Keep it up.
While learning more on EV, I came across a smart coil driver (the brain as you described) that can boost the EV performance in both torque and speed. It will be very interesting to see how it can perform on a Humvee.

More than the basic Hummer EV will cost.
Amazing project Zach! Question: Why not go with electric power-assist steering instead of hydraulic? That would be a bit more efficient too, I would think. Maybe someone already mentioned that. Great work, I really enjoy watching this series. Good luck!
