  • This video is about the restoration of my old Mirror Dinghy and her first sail thereafter..
PLEASE NOTE:- I am not in any way expert or proficient at restoring wooden dinghies, we have done a couple before but have a lot to learn..
IMPORTANT:- please note that proper breathing (dust) and eye protection should be worn..

Very nice. Doing this at the moment myself. I'm fibreglassing the entire hull and doing a red resin top coat. Can't wait to get her back out on the water 😊

Nice job Woody. Spruced up and ready for another 40 odd years sailing. I've looked at a lot of mirrors on EBay and the price and condition varies quite a lot. I enjoy the channels on YT like David, Mirror Cruising and am surprised at how seaworthy they are. I guess they are a great way to learn to sail, as they are rigged like a very small yacht.Fair winds....

Hi Dale, yes a great boat to learn to sail in, surprisingly quick and stable too.

Oh wow this has inspired me to repair my Mirror that I bought 5 years ago and has been sitting in my garden and even suffered an incident when I dropped her in her trolley in some garden rocks and put a hole un her hull but it’s not worrying me as I look forward to the experience of repairing her.

Very nice. I have just bought a mirror for my granddaughters and am getting tips for repairing it. It has not been sailed for many years but has been stored safely in a covered rack at the sailing club. Hopefully not much more than painting and varnishing.

Nice job sir! Although having just completely sanded my Mirror inside and out, and replaced all my fibreglass taping inside and out I was surprised that you donned a pretty lightweight face mask late in the piece. Old paint and fibreglass are just about the most carcinogenic combinations to be breathing in a confined space. I just never sand in the garage, always outside.

can you help, i am just doing mine, i notice he didn't tape the joints, where they actually taped on the outside, on rubbing mine down, i don't get any tape residue, and if so can you point me in the direction of buying a tape kit, in the uk.

Oh goodness ! I've done two mirrors in a similar fashion. Will remember to get better equipment for any future restos.

I would imagine Trident UK has what you are looking for, they are very good with Mirror parts. Woody

Really useful video, no need to over complicate life.
I’ve stripped mine back and just waiting for the weather to getting on with some epoxying.
    Can you tell me…
how you sealed the centre board with epoxy? How did you get it in there and ensure coverage?
How did you fix the gaff back together, the one we have is similarity split
    Thanks

Hi David, thanks for watching, I took a long handled art brush and painted the epoxy on thick on all four joints of the centreboard casing, (thus only epoxied the joints) also letting a little run down the joints. It seemed to work as she takes on hardly any water now. Good Luck with your resto.

Great video. I have recently bought a mirror that could do with a refresh. There are a few minor things that I would ideally like to get sorted, is there a book or anything you could recommend? I have tried googling but there are too many different opinions on the internet

There is a book called "Sailing the Mirror" by Roy Partridge but its more about the boat as a whole.
