450 WHP 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX - (One Take)

  • I don't know why, but I just love this Eclipse GSX, which is why we didn't just feature it on Tuned, but we are also featuring it here. Making 450 Wheel HP from its built, turbocharged 4G63 engine, this ancestor of the Evo is stupendously quick in a straight line, and can hold its own in the canyons.

    Things I learned from racing the 1G DSM over the years is this: First and foremost, before any mod build your transmission to the teeth and get a quality clutch and adjust the hydraulics properly! You do that and you've taken care of 90% of DSM issues, then you can have a very fun, VERY fast AWD car to absolutely destroy most things on the street.

    1990 Talon TSI AWD with swapped red top 4G63, big 16G turbo, 4 bolt rear end....former owner from 10 years ago checking in. DSM- driver slash mechanic. When my car ran, it devastated all...but it ran good about once a month. The rest of the time I was in the constant process of fixing something. Leaking transfer case, boost leaks, clutch, oil cooler lines, turbo banjo bolts, injectors and fuel pump, rattling and leaking sunroof. Still, for 1990 Talon/Laser/Eclipse cars were ground breaking, with "free" mods they dusted almost every domestic car from their time period. Driver focused cockpit and very slick factory transmission were definitely a huge bonus.

    Super clean 1G! I owned a 1G Talon about 3 years ago and it was an absolute mess. You gotta be really picky when purchasing a DSM. The 4G63, in bad hands, is a money pit to work on. However, if you get a good motor, like this one, and you build is accordingly, it will reward you. Hitting boost in a 4G63 is one of the greatest things I've ever felt and it's definitely an experience every car enthusiast should feel. It's insane.

Stock intercooler, 18g turbo aftermarket cams, aftermarket fpr, 1/2 fuel line, 3 " exhaust blowing flames. DSM'S equal lots of work and experience building. I miss my 20g/E85 1990 Talon. It leaked oil, didn't like to start, and would randomly die on me but there was no car on the planet I would rather have been driving at the time. Ate my brothers 2006 CTS-V on the highway. It had 186k on the motor at the time. I was planning on getting it prepped for road course duty when it was totaled on an icy night in a highway collision with an out of control SUV driver. I was soo pissed I cried.

    Southern California back-roads are always nice. Most people use the freeway network leaving behind many of the old transit roads that are nearly deserted. There are also usually not a lot of driveways. I remember when I was a delivery driver running late because I got lost, so I took one of these roads in East San Diego county between 60-80 in an E-150 van. I probably will never do that again.

    My 91 GSX, total rebuild, but the drive-train is a stage one to stage two by TeamRip, complete suspension upgrade, drive-train upgraded to 4 bolt and all components upgraded by TeamRip to 93-99 configuration. Daily driver, and is reliable, with drive-train upgrade, all electrical components under hood, cam sensor, tps, etc. wrapped with special heat reflection tape, main reason for failing is heat. Upgraded coilovers from Meagan Racing, changed all bushings to urethane, upgraded super heavy duty anti-sway bars, strut tower braces, JE pistons with ceramic coating, too much to list...love this car my 4th and last. Drivetrain rated to 6-800 h.p continuous, approx. 4-450 at the wheels.....

    • @fastfurious9489
      @fastfurious9489 Před 4 lety

      @@CaptainTonus 20G, and the 4-450 is at the crank, did not mean at the wheels, but after a while will be upgrading to a bigger turbo maybe. I know that the mitsi factory set up can handle 250 ft. lbs. torque and not continuously, should be going to the dyno before the end of the year then will have better numbers.

  • @UncleSiam
    @UncleSiam Před 8 lety

    I had a 93, took it to 450whp 11's 120 traps, 23 psi on premium octane. Doing it a disservice to not be using a race seat with harness. These cars not only accelerate but are great track cars. Without a seat and harness you'd stop short of finding the handling limits because you are flying out of your seat or holding onto the steering wheel.

    • @CaptainTonus
      @CaptainTonus Před 8 lety +2

      I'd like to get a racing seat and harness, but I also want to keep the interior as original as possible

    • @UncleSiam
      @UncleSiam Před 8 lety

      Tony Bird I tried to do the same thing. I only changed the driver's seat. It was a Corbeau that could still slide forward and backwards.
      The harness was a Schroth AutoControl. It is designed to lock up with an inertial switch but I installed a manual switch so that I could keep tension on it at all times and release it when I had to be able to access controls.
      The harness is anchored on the rear seat belt buckle anchor point. No roll cage is required. I could still use the passive seat belt.
      Cheers! :)

    I don't know if this is anything new for anyone or if it even makes sense at all, but the audio isn't flipped. It's an audiovisual illusion. The video that fills the most of your visual field is the roofcam, in that video, Matt and the owner are facing the correct way, but the audio comes from the inside of the car, which is when you look at the smaller screen when you hear a voice. But the interior GoPro is facing the other way around, so Matt is talking to the left side of the microfone, while being presented on the right side of the screen. You see him from the right, but his voice enters your left ear.

    I had a 1992 Plymouth Laser RS AWD. Leaked everything but boost, squeaked like a mouse in a meat grinder, tried to kill you with the seat belts, beat your kidneys into a mush after 2 minutes, and spent as much time on jack-stands as it did on the road. But when it was right, it was RIGHT. I miss that thing every day.
