- The Blood Angels are a fan favourite chapter and during the Horus Heresy, they defended Terra with absolute courage and fierce determination. In this tutorial we show you how to paint a Legionary for the Horus Heresy (great for Warhammer 40,000 too!) from start to finish.

im curious, what is your setup for making your videos? specifically whats your camera setup like, your work table, your paints section etc. basically behind the scenes of these videos. Also how do you decide what miniature to do or the color schemes.
You had me at Blood Angels. Now need that Sanguinius episode.
What I love the most about this channel is it provides tutorials and tools for those who still don't want/cannot afford an airbrusher.
It's getting quite hard to find quality tutorials in which the painter do not skip certain steps with it
I just love how you paint Blood Angels. I gotta thank you for introducing them to me through your original "How to Paint a Blood Angels Tactical Marine" video from the original Warhammer channel
That was a classic tbh
Love the look of the angel. Also I hadn't realized this till recently but your videos have been a good way to reduce frustration when hitting mistakes in my own painting. A lot easier to be calm and focused while watching you be that way.
I’m still just wondering what Legion Duncan went with for his HH army…
Sons of Horus 😁

I love your channel! You make it seem so much more manageable and it’s easy to keep up with.
Thank you so much! ☺
Thank you , DRPA .

This is a great guide I think I will borrow most of these tips to do Farsight Tau for my first army.
Oh my oh my, I can't wait to see a guide to Heresy Thousand Sons!
Received my grand master pledge today. Blown away! Well done Duncan & Rog 👏👏
That's fantastic! Thank you for the support but most importantly, we hope you enjoy the paints.
Only 2/3 year late. As an American I'm still waiting.
Got my paint set today! So excited!
Also it somehow escaped my notice that the included minis would be metal, but I am delighted that they are! I LOVE painting metal minis!
I just love the Mephiston Red colour!
Superb painting and tips on painting the sons of Sanguinius, Duncan!
Thank you
I have a whole ton of primaris marines I haven't painted. I have a ton of first born that I painted years ago. Because the paints have changed over the years, this is a exactly what I was looking for. The reds will be off (used the Blood Red of old) but I think they will still look OK. My old models on the table and new ones using this technique. Thanks Duncan! On a side note, you might want to change the roman numeral on this guy for the 9th and not 11 :D. Now it's time to get painting!
I always enjoy your videos. Not your talent, though it is incredible, but your delivery makes it a joy to watch, and an encouragement to try.
Wow, thank you!
I love Blood Angels, my favourite chapter❤
Definitely gonna think about a BA Legion army
They are a fun Legion to paint and iconic too
That crisp red... Perfection 👌!
Thanks, it's a fun and an iconic colour scheme to paint 😀
Great Video though I noticed one little mistake. At 19:40 the Roman Numerals on the right Pauldron are incorrect. XI means 11 what should be there is IX for 9 since the Blood Angels are the ninth Legion. You probably just flipped the Decal by mistake but it happens.
TWO THIN COATS!!!! The battle cry of The Brush Bearers..
Great, I'm looking forward to doing my own. Thanks!
Have fun and enjoy, they are such a cool Army
Excellent work as usual Duncan!
Thank you! Cheers!
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Hey Duncan, is Sanguinius on the table for a future primarch video? It’d be neat to see your work on the father angel!
Third time telling that Duncan Rhodes is my favorite birishti popel pseron
Just lovely
I knew right from the start that I would like the outcome :)
Can't wait to get Two Thin Coats paint in the states! I love citadel but I'd much rather give my money to Duncan.
Hey Duncan. I love your tutorials, brilliant content. I'm finding it particularly tricky to find that sweet spot for thinning the paint to do edge highlights. Did it take you a lot of practice to get so clean and sharp at it?
Zephon will look really good with this color scheme
I'd love to see Duncans take on some GRIMDARK Space Marines such as Ultramarines or really dirty Blood Angels!
Watch this space....
We
AWESOME Content as always. Would love to see your take on Alpha legion for horus heresy
Already done. We did a full tutorial for the Academy (duncanrhodes.com) a week or so ago 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA 🤗
This looks really good Duncan. Very smooth red.
Personally I would have painted the right shoulder pad black, because with the left shoulder black, and the black holster and bag underneath, with the gun held on the left it almost gives the appearance of the figure being half and half.
Now, how about some Alpha Legion next? I REALLY love their resin Contemptor Dreadnought.
Alpha Legion is already on the website (along with Alpharuis) and we are looking at a way to do the Alpha LWgion colour scheme without an airbrush 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA what about the old "Akhelian Green over metallic undercoat" method? I think it looks pretty good.
Hi Duncan, love the work, i've got multiple mark armour types for my blood angels (3-6) and i decided to make the mark 6 more of the old school rogue trader red (really bright red - like old blood red and yellow gun barrels too) while having the older marks a slightly darker more "heresy" era colour. Would love to see your version of that bright colour scheme on the newer gw mk6 model.
Mmm... not a bad idea 😀
Good marines to play 2d edition with.
Questions for you-
-Do you have to thin down the washes when you apply them?
-How do you keep a point on your brushes?
How about a tutorial on The Sanguinor for 40k? Love that dude.
Hi Duncan! Do you think you'll ever paint a Raven Guard marine on this channel? I was thinking the colors you used for the the black bolter casing might be the good for Raven Guard armor.
Omg...beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Please show us how you would approach building, assembling, and painting a Gundam from Bandai. If you need recommendations on which one to try I have several which fulfill different criteria from beginner friendly to more complicated, from 1/144th to 1/100 to 1/60th scale.
Can I go straight to washing if I opt to use mephiston primer by Citadel? Or do I still ned to cover that with mephiston red?
I see him painting it.. and i still cant believe how he does it
The paint job is great. The legion number decals are backwards though! (IX not XI)
Maybe you can help me. The new Ymyr conglomerate League of Votann use the same red. I could always use mephiston red over the same primer you used, but if I was able to get some red citadel contrast paint to speed it up the process a bit, would it work over this same primer color? I'm trying to save money and use the spray can I already have haha
Very nice tutorial, enjoyed watching at 0.75 speed :D
I have some classic original metal Terminator miniatures I want to paint as Blood Angels, but I want them to look as close to the original early 90s Blood Angels from Eavy Metal as possible. So brighter than the current look.
What colours should I use to get that look? Obviously using currently available paint, not the original Blood Angels Orange. Would undercoating in white but using these same colours achieve a close approximation of that early 90s look?
I’ve seen your video painting Ultramarines in the early 90s colour / style, and it’s great as it uses modern paint but looks like it was painted in the early 90s.
Fantastic video, however, have you done one yet for the heresy Dark Angels?
Not yet! But it is in our plans.
not related to this mini but which brush from other companies would you suggest as replacements for the citadel xs artificer layer brush if you know of any.
Check out Artist Opus, they have a wide range. They are a little expensive but are great quality. Windsor Newton 7's are also really good.
It’s a nice paint job Duncan, although it looks like you made him a member of the 11th legion
the best painter with his fantastic painting tutorials are back! little question : i start a new Heresy alpha legion army and i watch TON of tutorials but i'm loose.
How do you paint metalic (or not) alpha legion Master Duncan please? 🙂
He's got tutorials for those in the academy. It's been well worth the money for me, I highly recommend giving the paid subscription on his website a try. I've been subscribed for almost a year now and haven't regretted it. All the tutorials have been worthwhile, there's always something to take away from them.
@@niklas3947 Thank you. i'm agree with you and i will suscribe his website ^^
What do you mean by Blood Angels are cleaner? Like this armor is more parade ready?
Dear Duncan, you are my Bob Ross of miniatures painting.
Would you apply exactly the same steps while painting a Blood Angels vehicle like a dreadnought, a predator or a Spartan? I think the trick is to correctly break the paintjob apart so it's not just a single colored blob. Do you have any tips for this or links to videos where you cover this?
Also, what color would you recommend for glowing things like plasma or volkite on the Blood Angels? I'd probably go with the eye lenses step in thus tutorial for plasma, do you agree?
So Duncan, what about more 30k-ish tutorials? With more weathering and less edge highlighting like Forgeworld's style of doing them? I mean this is just basically 40k paintjob with a 40k model with 40k markings
Great video by a cute Englishman !!
Please do those white scar guys
Painting white scares me
Duncan… is that an XI transfer on a legionary of IX Legion?
Do you by any chance have a timeline for when your paints will be available for purchase. I just found the kickstarter today and was crushed that it was already closed.
Hi Michael. The last of the Kickstarters are being sent out now. As for getting the paints into stores, the team at TAG is currently working on that as I type this.
Love the tutorials, just one thing: the Roman numeral is backward… Blood angels are IX legion
Could you explain how to paint iron warrior legion for 30K?
Honestly, these would make for good first born marines for the raven guard! Mark VI is literally named after their primarch and they made do with this armor for centuries.
Is it the same color scheme for 40k?
Where are you getting those transfers? I have the ones from FW and the one you put on the leg is not there.
We couldn't get the Forgeworld ones as they are sold out so we had to use the 40K version 😊
Would love to see you painting some knight models Harry potter miniatures if you ever get bored Of warhammer 👍🏻
wouldnt it have been better to put the silver before the wash?
Don’t want to paint anymore can’t make anything this good🤪
Is this method viable for mkIII marines?
Sure is
god that deep breath at the beginning, happens every vid lol
😄
Curios why he used mephiston red when his own brand has an equivalent?
Who is your favourite primarch? 😁
Surely if you're using the same water to thin your metallics, you then run the risk of metallic flakes on any subsequent paint you thin after that. That's something I was taught back in the 80's when I started.
A little amount doesn't matter but yes, if you've used quite a bit then you must most definitely change your water and clean your brush
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA and here's me I've been so wary of it all these decades!
Can I play these CZcams tutorial videos in my hobby store?
I would love to try it with Duncan paints, however, I live in America and bought the most expensive Kickstarter set over a year ago, so obviously I haven't received anything yet. *angry eyebrows*
Gotta reverse that decal. IX not XI
Duncaaan D: you got the decals wrong it's the IX legion not XI D:
3:03 where can we even get these paints? I'm from the uk and cannot find them on any of my favourite hobby sites or stores. Not particularly selling your paint range well when we can't get ahold of them.
The Kickstarters are arriving now and the paints will be available in online stores in the near future. You can use the alternative colour for each paint now so you can paint along 😊
I don’t know how I got here but I’m gonna make a shit anime reference,
IS THAT THE RED COMMET?
(Also nice video!)
So, for a clean and neat look, wash, wash, wash?
Hello how are you
Love the work, however the roman numeral is upside down. It should be IX, Not XI. They are the 9th legion, not 11th
*Deep breath*
IX Legion, not the XI legion...
Excellent paint work though
Indeed!
There's a severe lack of Age of Sigmar miniature painting on the channel and it makes me sad.
Do not prime in black! Prime in Brown from below and ivory from above. You get a. Super highlighted and shaded miniature and all you have to do is slap 2 thin coats of red and then you're done.
First!!
So... Update on EU shipping.. ?
You say close but no actual estimation, ever.
No blood Angels Orange and Terracotta highlight? these aren't real Blood Angels... or I'm just old lol
not for nothing but with the recent and 5th delay on Two Thin Coats paints, how about you dont use them until we have them in our hands?
Wait duncan. I know the video is a bit old. But why shade the entire models when you can just base coat it, recess shade and then highlight. I think it feels like you're expending more energy to wash and then reapply the base cost. 🤔
That's a good and fair question. The answer is that I simply find that it is quicker, especially with Space Marine armour.
