Half-Life: Combined | A Half-Life Cinematic [S2FM]

- The Combine Empire is ever expanding thanks to their significant ability to adapt and survive in new and hostile environments. By enslaving and combining themselves with the natural inhabitants of conquered worlds, they are able to swiftly take over and claim control of new dimensions.
Some natural inhabitants will more willingly than others choose to combine themselves with the Combine Empire, in exchange for a better standard of living. Perhaps to protect and care for a loved one, however, things may not always turn out the way one had intended.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this cinematic I did my best to 'show not tell' the story. The dialogue is at a minimum, and the story is shown through character expressions and movements. If you have anything you think could improve the future story telling of my cinematics, please leave it in a comment! :)
The story is of course not canon, and my work is in no way associated with the work of Valve, however, I tried to stick as much to the Half-Life lore with this one as I could, but there's still a few things I have added here and there.
If you enjoyed the film, I would gladly appreciate if you left a comment or a like on the video, it would help me a lot for future projects! :)
Thanks for watching, more Half-Life animations and sketches coming up before you know it! Stay tuned! - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Incident report:
During the standard anti-insurgent raid, heavy unit D-647-2H got a serious emotional disorder that leads to the death of the whole platoon and losing of insurgent intel data caused by fire in the building.
The platoon havy unit was emotionaly connected to the one of the female insurgents that was executed during the standard procedure of raid.
The incedent showed that sound and visual mind reconstruction procedure is ineffective against extreme stress situations and leads to the failing of Combine operations.
End of report.
Suggestions:
Cybernetic brain augmentation can solve the problem with emotional disorder, but tactical flexibility will become lower as the whole quality of the units.

Having this take place with HL:A's Combine actually makes the returning of memories and betrayal more accurate than HL2. The Combine soldiers act so much more human in HL:A, like erasing memories is not exactly perfected yet, or they are having a hard time removing human nature unlike HL2 where they refuse to disobey and are complete cogs in the machine.
It isn’t lore accurate. Memories are suppressed by the advisors. And the suppression is refreshed every so often. So it is impossible for them to gain their memories back.
@@ChaoZz07 shhhhh
I can't remember specifics but wasn't the memory erasing procedure not in effect yet during HL:A?
@@ChaoZz07 Its obvious they have some humanity at least at a Grunt level. Hence the "He is kicking it." moment, no Combine soldier from HL2 would be kicking a dead strider for fun. Its like overwatch has to keep them in place more often. They also have more human movement and tactics, along with more will to live than the bodies that basically just run at you in HL2. They even speak more human.
@@echostar034 you mean disabled strider?
11:07 the blue glow from the eyes is an awesome visual indicator. It really makes his presence be felt even if he's not physically on screen.
Imagine how much harder Half-Life 2 would've been with these guys. When I make a HL2 SFM series, I am definitely going to be incorporating these new combine in it.
You join CP either because of the ration deduction, starvation or you are scared of the Combine itself. Now you joined CP without even wanting to beat people but guess what happens, you have to finish your "Beating quota". If you dont finish it, say goodbye to your relatives and urself. There is no evil human in HL2, there is only Combine which is there to enslave races anyway.

I feel like half life alyx is a bit more friendlier than half life 2 when it's about the combine
Yea, if you mean they treat the citizens with a bit of more freedom, youre right
Different writers
@@dietzel8988
Different times i'd guess.
Can be explained for example by the fact that, from what i remember, in HL2 Combine is close to mastering local teleportation, and thus humanity is loosing it's only value.
But tbh I don't feel how the combine gives more freedom in HL:A, it's rather just that valve didn't show almost anything about that. Doesn't mean it's not there.
The combine was just as gruesome in Alyx as HL2, I think. Possibly moreso because you saw in more detail how they harness other lifeforms for their tech (vortigaunts, antlions, biomatter locks)
Also they shoot an unarmed dude in the face in the QZ.
Also they haven't even finished building the citadel yet so they havent properly culled the herd fully
Well it might be beacause that happen a couple years before the events of half life 2 so maybe after what alyx did they started giving them less freedom
Imagine anti-brainwashed combine soldiers working with the resistance. Now that would give them some much needed fire power.
If you look closely on the HL2 resistance models, some of them have combine solder neck armor under their clothes.
During the battle of City 17 all CPs either deserted or were KIA.
it would technically be possible since combine soldiers (contrary to popular belief) retain some free will, as demonstrated multiple times throughout hl:A and hl2, but they are extremely indoctrinated, it would be hard to convince one that the combine are bad considering that from their perspective they owe their existence to the combine.
@@Eyeling you forgot about the fact they modify your body and put implants in your brain so for the higher ranks there's barely any free will,
@@waffler-yz3gw Where did you get that idea from? They all have the same voice lines, just edited slightly for the higher ranks to sound different. We can actually see what implants they get in their brain in hl2, as there is a shirtless and helmetless combine soldier Easter egg in hl2. The implants are focused around the areas of the brain that are related to empathy, meaning that the combine want the overwatch soldiers to have some level of free will, as the lack of empathy areas of the brain will turn them into psychopaths and they will be more predisposed to cruelty. We can hear emotions in the voice lines of the combine soldiers too, just listen very carefully. And why would Breen address the combine elites at the end of hl2 as if they were sentient? He askes them to take the gravity gun away in a very casual way. Also, why do the combine soldiers not shut down when both nova prospekt and the citadel were destroyed if they don't have free will? Who is controlling them? Isaac Kliener literally says that the Combine Overwatch Units are basically left to their own devices, desperately trying to recontact the combine overworld. Valve has always shown that the combine soldiers have some level of free will and self awareness, there really isn't anything in half life that shows that they don't.
Look at that source 2 bread holy crap it looks good
All the SFM 2 food

5:48 - I cannot fathom to explain how much that part broke me I mean the videos creator did a spectacular job at subtle details! The way that Combine Commander or the Officer looked away made me remember that they were human they still had their human minds and personalities as well as their ability to feel emotions
That's one thing I'm not clear on, I'm pretty sure the combine soldiers have their emotions wiped in HL2
@@naturesquad9174 Half Life Alyx makes it *very abundantly clear* that the Overwatch Soldier indeed have their emotions even personalities intact
There are several lines laughs and speech dialogue that you can find on yt some are very depressing they are saying they are sorry as well as help us occasionally
@@thedoruk6324 I think the soldiers in Alyx are just earlier overwatch soldiers from when the Combine were 'experimenting' on humans and when they had not established themselves enough on Earth. The overwatch in HL2 are improved soldiers, they have different uniforms, and have their humanity removed.
@@blueshark7385 probable although combine appearently already had the control on Alyx

10:17 *The only thing they fear is you intensifies*
I want to see more storyline of the CP's and the Combine after the events of Half Life Alyx and how they become more strict towards the citizens like you see in HL2, after the Gman gets let out of the vault.
At the beginning of Half Life Alyx, Civil Protection seem to be a lot more relaxed allowing citizens to ride bicycles, the blue uniforms are optional to wear. You are allowed pets and you could socialise with other people.
It seems they got stricter after the loss of the vault, the completion of the citadel allowing them more ease on resources through import.
And a standardization of combine forces if hl2 combine soldiers are to take any form of higher canonicity over hlA soldiers.
It seems the combine wanted to finally leave their transhumanist prototyping stage, get the local teleportation technology and ship all combine forces to the next occupation zone.
Thus everyone was being pressured hard to join the CP aswell as then enlist in the Transhuman Armed Forces.
most likely became stricter as times went on in amore gradual fashion once rebellions began to creep up on the radar, plus the more gradual change is a smart move as it allows more time to adapt to small changes so theres much less resistance to them
To be fair, I think another big reason for the differences is simply that the lack of variety in both Combine units and citizen attire, as well as the lack of more complex sequences and behaviours, was just a lot more reasonable 16 years ago compared to when Alyx came out. This seems more like an expansion on ideas they’d have implemented if given the chance. Of course, that’s just the meta reasoning. The in-universe time gap gives the developers all the canonical explanations they need.
I'm guessing it's punishment for rebellion. The more rebels cause chaos, the more privileges get taken away for everyone else. That is a pretty smart strategy to be honest - it makes more rebels surrender so civilian life will be less difficult.
I think it simply because combine or breen are simply that smart and they took freedom away gradually so people wont notice. its likely from the latter since the combine themselves would NOT care whether human like their control or not, Breen would likely persuade the combine to be nicer in earlier days so Eli keep working on the local teleport and also simply as mercy for his own species (remember Breen didnt want combine extinguish human and only took the role to save mankind)

If I recall, the soldiers in Alyx are implied to be less brainwashed than the ones in HL2...guess this would be a good justification for why they're prequel-only units (though the lack of an Overwatch equivalent to the heavy soldiers and LMG units still ends up being an oddity in retrospect).
The composition in this is incredible. Some of these shots (like the protagonist smashing the gunners head in) was badass as hell
Now I hope the combines understood the lesson because they were not snugly destroyed by a citizen but the fact that the collector remembered the girl and taught revenge for her how I want people not to die at the hands of combines ...

I played in hl2 + ep1, 2 in hla not played I lost my VR glasses + I lost my acc on steam
The combine always understood the lesson though, all of their units receive family protection n stuff n haves their family with them/constantly united
What i assume happened here is that she was caught at the wrong place at the wrong time.
There are 2 kinds of ways to humanize civil protection

my god this was chilling, a masterpiece and i'm not ashamed to admit you made me cry, *twice,* and i don't think i've ever seen something so real in the half-life universe, the emotions felt real i felt his anger, his pain, his sadness all in a sequence of going postal on his makers, yet there isn't catharsis in taking back your free will from the monsters that made you into what you are, there's only letting go, and he did, and he found his love once more.
i can't begin to state how much this moved me, genuinely, and I don't know the right words to sum it up really but you've made something incredible here and I want you to know I feel the effort you put into your work just based off of the emotional response this elicited from me.
and below all the soppy stuff i just want to compliment you on those action scenes too, seeing him mow down the combine with ease, take them out they way they dealt with civs, the camera work, the bullet's both impact and ricochet sounds, the audio work, it's just all so fucking good, it's always gratifying when the ''bad guy turn good'' trope is used but it's a common trope for a reason, it's always fucking cool and this is no exception 11/10.

I think after the combineification procedure, probably their brain most likely works like a bionic computer. Their memories not only been erased but probably their brain redesigned as a bionic ai computer only capable of accomplishing certain tasks.
heart-breaking as many comments suggest, this story clearly showed the POINT where the main character (AND all other humans depicted here) broke away from his humanity, aka had his heart broken.
Implies the whole question of collective responsibility: once too many yielded to the Combine (aka, corrupted), there's no other choice but 1) joining the Combine, or 2) fighting the Combine. Silent obedience or running away is a mere delay, but the choice is still imminent. Any sympathy for the guy AND his wife should end once he made his first baton hit to "provide" for his family. He made HIS choice. HE put himself and his wife above other men and their wives. And didn't she know what was exactly the difference in his "status" as an earner of one loaf of bread and an earner of a full package of produce? Oh, she DID.
So, where's the moral "duality" here? You either fight the evil or run from it. As soon as you decided to just "accept it" - you're in for the death and destruction. First, the ones that you are complacent with, then complicit to. But later on - it will imminently turn against you. Same as in any dictatorship.
So watch yourselves, good citizens of ANY city.
Best comment so far.
That's so much easier said than done, lmao.
There's a reason why HL also portrays accurately the sheer hopelessness of your average rebel, such words mean nothing when you get a baton to the face and lined up in front of a firing squad.
Not to mention "evil" learns too, changing tactics and approach, the ""best"" kind of tyranny is that one which you do not recognize as such.
