    Hi Tom! How are you? Wow! That video was fantastic! I can't imagine the amount of time to put all of that together. Thanks for the reply earlier about the leaf litter. Down here in the South Appalachian's I have to pick up the leaves practically one by one since we have way tons of stupid pine needles everywhere. But when Autumn arrives its better. We have oak, elm, popular, sycamore, maple, etc.
    Oh, btw, I have the "oh, cool, nice T, let's buy it!" disease! And I learned there is NO CURE!!
    Side affects are: uncontrollable urges to buy every kind of feeder insects; waking up in the middle of the night to check your T's; your storage areas are full of used and new enclosures, various substrates, bags of soda pop bottle lids, stacks of new and used deli cups of various sizes, boxes of cork bark and spider wood plus interesting tree branches you found on a walk; more boxes of rocks for decor and of plastic plants; you are awake all night watching and waiting for one of your T's to molt or worrying why your A. chalcodes hasnt eaten for months; checking various breeder sites online for sales, new species availability and prices; you cannot walk through a Wal-Mart or Target without looking at a Sterilite or Rubbermaid container and thinking, "oh, this would be perfect for...", and heaven forbid you see a Container Store!; cannot look at a wall and think where to put shelves to display your various T's; squirreling money away to buy a new species you've seen (even if you have no more room for it!) 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 😂
    I'm being verbose since I just bought two more T's. A Tliltcotl vagans and a Grammastola porteri from Tyler at the west coast Spider Shoppe in Tacoma, WA. (I had a $30 discount and just had to use it) So, yes Tom, I may have survived the Covid pandemic but not the "I need more T's disease." 😆

    Hey Tom, we spoke during the life premiere but I’m hitting the comments again bc I know this is the fastest way to get ya. So I just witnessed something I’ve never seen before and I can’t remember you ever mentioning it on the podcast and I’ve gone thru them front to back…two of my slings (larger slings) both just ditched their meals, turned their back to the partially eaten prey, shook their butts, and did another 180 to resume eating. The only thing I could come up with is that possibly they didn’t feel they had a secure grasp and were using their spinnerets to anchor the prey to get better leverage. Could be way off here but let me know if you’ve seen this or what your take is on it. Thanks again!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Před 3 lety

      Hey, Joshua! Did it end up eating the rest of their meals? If it's a big item and it starts to get sloppy, they will take a moment to web it up to hold it together while they eat. The thought is that this keeps it from hitting the ground and attracting other bugs like ants. Could that be what you saw?

    • @joshuaread1563
      @joshuaread1563 Před 3 lety

      Hey Tom thanks for the reply. They did in fact both finish their meals. And your explanation makes a lot of sense. I never considered that they may be protecting it from other scavengers. I guess even captive bred keep most if not all of their wild instincts. Very cool! Ps I’m going to have more questions so I’ll likely always attach them to this video for consistency sake. Just a heads up. Thanks again.

    Hey Tom, I was listening to your latest podcasts on a long car ride, and I thought I'd share some tips I learned from being in the houseplant hobby that you might find useful. You were talking about having holes in the bottom of an enclosure to rehydrate peat. One way to limit the amount of substrate that would fall out of holes like that is to cover them with a little piece of carbon fiber window screen. Another thing that might be useful is misting down dustier substrates with water to stop particles from flying off in the air as much. I haven't tried with peat, but a little bit of spraying has been really helpful for keeping perlite dust out of my lungs. As for additives, I like fine sand a lot. I also have some imagitarium sphagnum moss from petco that I like to throw into mixes to maintain moisture if appropriate. It isn't as effective at holding moisture as the New Zealand sphagnum, but it's smaller and it comes in shades of green that I think looks much nicer
    I'm inclined to agree with you that Avicularias (and C. versicolor) aren't the most appropriate spiders to be your first ever tarantula. I've had a crazy hard time getting them to consistently eat live prey, and I also had a lot of trouble setting up my slings correctly in a way that wouldn't allow them to run out of the enclosure onto my arm. I gave my Avic avic to my professor as a class pet since he had a hisser colony, and unfortunately he never got it to eat and it starved :(

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Před 3 lety

      Hello! Thank so much for chiming it! Using screen sounds like a good idea to me. As for the peat, I DO try to moisten it a bit, but it comes so dry and dusty that it doesn't do all that much. Haha I do have to try to find some finer sand. And I'm so sorry to hear about your Avic. :(
