    That diffuser is a real trap for a start, if you don’t have it pushed all the way in so that it clicks into the locked position then the flash head zoom function will not work. The user manual doesn’t mention this, in fact the user manual doesn’t even show there is a diffuser, go figure how a company can be so dumb not to mention this. I thought my flash was faulty and was about to return it before I figured it out.

    Hi Frederik, this was very informative video. I appreciated explanation from someone who knows what he is talking about. I do looking for good Speedlight for my Fujifilm X pro2/XH1 I do have couple of Nissin Di700a but I do looking for something with more power also better recycling time and also want to get away from AA batteries. Only I struggle between this and MODUS 600RT MK II SPEEDLIGHT from Hahnel. If you are familiar with Modus speedlight I would really appreciate it if you can comment or share any thoughts between those two.Thank You JN.

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  Před rokem +1

      Hi JN. My speedlite journey has been as follows: Looked at brand flashes and could see my budget would not contain these. Then tried Youngnuo, only to learn they were very specific to camera brands, so I went with Godox and initially Godox with AA batteries, but later upgraded to LiOn. And the mark III of the V860 checks all my boxes. So I have found a small path through the woods, and unfortunately Hahnel has not been part of my journey. I tend to stay with Godox - my motto is that if you're loyal to me, then I am loyal to you. And Godox has been a very loyal gear partner (no, I am not sponsored). Hope this gives some context. All the best!

  • @bennykanny

    Hi Frederik! I often get a clear light shadow bar on each and every picture depending on what side I use the flash. In this case it’s the top of the flash that fails to give a full light spread. I have used 1/1 full flash in manual mode and I use 50 zoom mode with of my 50 mm lens. Latest photos with this issue had a shutter speed of 80 and f.4.0, iso 400 on a canon 5dsr, so clearly not a sync problem. Is this a known issue, and could it get resolved with a firmware update?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  Před rokem

      Hi Benny! Thank you for raising an interesting case there! I have not heard of a similar issue before! Judging from your camera settings I would agree: a shutter speed around 1/80th should not give sync speed issues. A few questions: when you say "depending on what side I use the flash", I do not follow unfortunately. Can you elaborate on what you mean? And can you tell me how far away you are from the subject?

    • @bennykanny
      @bennykanny Před rokem +1

      @@frederikboving Thanks for answering so quickly. Yeah so I would gladly mail you the pics so you can judge for yourself.
      Sorry for the cryptical description. What I mean is that the issue seems to be on the top part of the flash head (were the reflex, and white plate are kept). I mean, that. the side were the loss of light shows on the pic. The distance is about 5 meters or more. I go down a notch in flash zoom to a wide angle of 25 mm the light spread is more equal, but you can still see a slight loss. It's super frustrating cause I recently bought it, model Godox 860iii.

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  Před rokem

      @@bennykanny Ok, that is truly frustrating! My best advice is: try to vary a lot of things and see what you can learn about the "consistency" of the issue, e.g.:
      what happens if you try to pull out and engage the built in diffuser? Does that change anything?
      What if you pull out the white reflector, does that change anything?
      What if you leave the shutter open for a long time in manual exposure (say 1/10th of a second) and at the same time close down the aperture dramatically?
      What if you change the lens - any difference?
      Is the mechanical shutter engaged or are you shooting with the electronic one instead?
      What if you de-mount the flash and re-mount it again - any difference? Is it (or the trigger) properly mounted in the hot shoe?
      I'm just suggesting all the variances because I think each time you shoot with a variation you may get a little more information that pin-points the issue more precisely. Also, try to forget the diagnosis you currently have (something wrong with the top of the flash) and look at what all your tests tells you with a pair of fresh eyes. Hope this is a bit of inspiration. All the best.

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  Před rokem +1

      Not quite: you cannot cover the built in flash. It needs to be able to send so much light that the slave can see it. And it will not work the same way as a radio controlled flash, as the optically triggered flash can only be set to manual power. I have written a blog post about shooting with an optical slave flash here: frederikboving.com/what-is-optical-slave-mode-in-flash-photography/

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  Před rokem

      Hi, sorry to hear about your troubles! I have only owned the Nikon versions of the Godox flashes and then controlled them via the XPro trigger. Sounds to me like you have the flash sitting directly on the xt5. I believe the xt5 is a relatively new camera, so my best advice is to check if there is a firmware update to the flash that you can install. And maybe a bit basic: make sure the flash is pushed all the way forward in the hot shoe.
