theres a massive difference between scripted and guided, the show was guided,
I never thought Mythbusters was a reality show simply because it wasn't fake.
I could be wrong, but I think for union purposes, any show that is unscripted (as in, the episode is not written beforehand by professional screenwriters) is considered "reality television," and that includes things like documentaries.
You'd be surprised just how fake something can be even if everything that was filmed was totally unplanned and spontaneous. Editors are storytellers, and they have ways to invent a story out of footage that doesn't contain one.
At least in the case of Mythbusters, they kept that to a minimum. Just enough to keep things making sense, keep things entertaining and funny and well-paced, and have a basic episode structure. They don't seem to have gone to the lengths a lot of other shows do to make the audience think something far more dramatic happened than what actually happened.
It's interesting that he compares the pilot to CZcams, because in a lot of ways Mythbusters feels more like a CZcams series than a television series. Like it was about the experience, not about all the showbiz nonsense.

Adam, I don’t think you’ll read this. But if you do, please know when Mythbusters was on the air, we’d all sit around as a family and watch. My kids at the time where something like 8-10 years old. Mythbusters was a good family TV show-which is non-existent now days. It was nice to gather as a family, be entertained and learn something every week. We all wish it never went off the air. Thank you for the great family memories.

@@tested We didn't have cable at the time, but when the DVDs came out we definitely sat as a family and watched them avidly. We each have our favorites and we've many over and over again. I REALLY wish more of the episodes were available streaming. I don't find Ultimate Mythbusters anywhere, and isn't there a Shark Mythbusters as well?
There were a lot of times on Mythbusters that I didn't think it was "scripted", but it really seemed like they were repeating a conversation they had when they weren't recording and one of them said "oh we'd better say that for the show" or something.
I was once in the studio audience for _Top Gear_ (in 2017) which is a similar kind of 'create a situation, put the talent into it and let them go as they will therein' kind of semi-scripting where they only have bullet points for what to discuss. Every so often, the director would ask them to repeat a piece of conversation that just happened from the heart, so they could get a different shot or tone or whatever. I often thought that take two or three of a conversation/back-and-forth, they came across a little more self-conscious or slightly less natural in how they delivered it, just because they were thinking about it again rather than going off on one impulsively. Maybe the same thing happened on _Mythbusters_ as well.
Pretty cool to have a community of viewers that would gently redirect Dan in a friendly manner. Says a lot about the culture Adam helps develop and sustain.

@@tested It's dissapointing that these Tested videos with Adam have such a seemingly personal format, but yet he is so far removed from the comments on the videos. People think they're replying to Adam but they're not.
@@mrb5217 It's odd that you find that disappointing. In all honestly, do you expect him to sit and comb through every response on every video? The channel has more than 6 million subscribers. The fact that there is a person/team at Tested who are making sure he gets to read some comments is amazing!

@@mrb5217I will add to what other's are saying and tell you this is true for a LOT of channels on CZcams. Any sufficiently large channel has a team for comment curation. At least here this is transparent, there are some channels that are not so transparent.
Think of company social media accounts in the same vein. Do you think the mascots, CEOs, ect are behind the keyboard of the posts? No, is a specialized individual or team. CZcams is yet another frontier of business and livelihood as any other business. Actors have their own set of teams to help with social image and to maintain it when it would otherwise be Impossible.
To think that this, or any other channel should function differently based on asinine expectations are ridiculous. I'd like to see your attempt at doing everything Adam does, while still maintaining THIS comment section too. I hope this does something in the way of making you think a bit more or differently about the function of CZcams channels like these, or any other.
Adam, in 2006 my wife and I ran into you on the showroom floor of Macworld. She promptly and simultaneously grabbed my wrist and your shoulder and yelled in your face, “We love you, Adam!!” While true, I still silently apologize to this day. Thanks for what you do and for for keeping me infinitely inspired.

I work in entertainment and cross paths with celebrities every so often and usually it's fun and cool but not something I seek out. Hearing that Adam Savage was going to be in the building where I was working was different -- I actively wanted to meet him (which in itself felt weird). I made a point to go to where he was saying hello to people and felt very awkward and nervous that he'd turn out to be a jerk. Just the opposite -- he's absolutely the nicest guy and genuinely interested in the world and the people around him. Later I had a chance to be in a video with Adam for Tested and the comment section was absolutely the kindest, most positive place I've ever seen on the internet. Adam shows his fans how to be great and they respond by being great. It's remarkable.
Adam, I recognize your desire to keep the kids names private to respect them and to honestly potentially keep them safe. The first time you called them thing 1 and thing 2 I chuckled.
yeah- I've been a fan of Adam for almost 2 decades (since I was a small child myself) and I'm vaguely aware he has kids, but I know absolutely nothing about them and want it to stay that way out of respect

I remember hearing how the car episode kinda saved someone as they saw the episode and later in life went into a semi frozen lake and remained calm and did what Adam had described on the show and made it out. And being in cold water is a different game. Imagine sinking in a car but you can't think or breathe even when your head is above water
It’s absurdly easy to remember Mythbusters episodes with just a few words “underwater car episode”. I suppose they were that interesting.
I understand the weird fan thing. I was a Journalist in the Navy, stationed at a broadcast detachment overseas in the early '90s, and anchored the nightly newscast. It was a great job but every now and then someone I had never met would approach me, address me by my first name, and start talking to me like they had known me for years. It wasn't scary or anything, just weird. I can't imagine what real celebrities must go through.
One thing that I am sure was reassuring for Adam during "Underwater Car" is that Jamie, who is a certified diver, was underwater the whole time he was.

It’s a good thing they explain the plan to everyone, including producers and insurance companies while having experts offer assistance. Imagine if they did something stupid like dive 2.5 miles below the ocean in a cheap tube with everyone trying to veto it for safety reasons.

Adam, I think Kristen reads these, but maybe she'll pass it along haha- you have been such an inspiration to me as a maker and geek since I was a little girl watching Mythbusters on cable with my family. You have taught me so much as a maker through this channel! Your infectious joy and wonderment with your projects help me want to make more and not give up! Being able to get a view into your creative process and problem-solving process is such a treat. Growing up, I hoped Mythbusters would be on air long enough for me to be old enough to join the crew. Alas, it did not happen, but I still love to creatively problem solve in making as well as in theatre/prop making/set designing/etc!
Maybe some day I will be able to meet you or take a tour of the cave and be able to listen to your thought processes and engulf myself in your storytelling with each piece or tool that comes along. Love you man!
Mythbusters was my absolute #1 "Must-Watch" TV show! I definitely miss it. It has so MANY good things going for it! The geek humor, the SCIENCE, testing and experimenting, building cool stuff, "seeing what happens when..." and the best parts were where the myth was busted, but then they went on to "duplicate the results"!! I really wish this show continued. As for naming Adam's kids! :( SHIELDS UP! RED ALERT!! Man, that is totally a NO-GO-ZONE! :(

I knew Mythbusters was unscripted for sure after Adam split open his lip on the vaccum cleaner motor. Who would tell him to do that? Anyone who put 2 seconds of thought into that knew it would be a bad idea -but then again it was great television...
the question wasn't asking if the events of the show were scripted, but if Adam and Jamie were instructed to cover certain topics or go down a certain path with conversations. They were not asking if the entire show was planned out.
I've always thought one of the big reasons Mythbusters was so successful was because everything was so genuine, and it wasn't some pre-scripted nonsense like a lot of reality TV is. The sincerity that you all displayed on camera was the magic sauce that made the show so compelling.
It’s odd to me to think about pressures from “the network” being a thing today. Only a very small portion of the TV I consume-for I-don’t-know how many years now-has been anything produced by a network.

I had a huge fear of speaking in public up until sometime when I was around 10-11 years old, and we had this school project where we had to pick a subject and then talk about it in front of the whole class. I was totally petrified and tried to weasel my way out of doing it. But eventually the teacher forced me to stand in front of the class and state all the fact I knew about "the Elk". After that I never had any kind of issue with speaking in front of a lot of people. It was just like a switch was flicked inside me somehow. Pretty weird in retrospect.
One of the things I loved most about Mythbusters was that it was genuine and not scripted. It was the only true reality show. You did experiments and the results were the results. Thank you for all the great nights sitting with my son watching you.

@@icarusbinns3156 I always hoped that Discovery would do a Dirty Jobs/Mythbusters cross promotion like they did with their other shows. Lord knows that the Mythbusters delved into enough "dirty job" type myths that Mike would have been right at home. Given that the premise of Dirty Jobs was to give much needed recognition to the unsung heroes that do the less prestigious jobs, and given Mike's general experience with blue collar jobs, he could have easily become a temporary intern helping with a dirty myth of some sort and show what the rest of the team who weren't Adam, Jamie, Tori, Kari or Grant had to do to make the show run.

I’ll never forget the episode where the insurance company told you no. You where very upset about it because it was an iconic sort of hero scenario from movies. The falling through canopies stunt. I wanna say that was also the plywood wind surfer/parachute and the jumping just before the falling elevator hits the bottom. I know you went through a lot of prep beforehand on some of your stunts, looking back similar to the falling through the canopy’s, is there a list of myth’s/stunts that you wish you got the chance to film? Do you think the way you sorta jumped into a stunt or myth, had a rip the bandage off fast so your brain had less time to try and get you to say no, situation led to a lot of your success with the show? I know the contrast between you and Jaimie was a big part of it, but I liked seeing the enthusiasm and even the failures sometimes because it wasn’t like the scripted perfect TV or pre manufactured reality tv drama crud. I could honestly enjoy watching a rerun of all seasons, with an extra adding of cameo’s of the characters reliving the shows and maybe a peppering of newer myth/recorded data from today.
Asking for some community help in finding a video Adam made because he said some really wise helpful things and I want to go back and watch it again. He was talking about not always knowing how he would solve a problem completely, or not always knowing all the steps in a big complex build but the thing he pressed on is that you only need to know the NEXT step in a build. Do anyone know in what video he talks about this? I don't remember if it was in a Ask Adam or a philosophical interlude in a one day build or something else. Thanks in advance!
It's cool knowing how much control y'all had over the show. Like even in editing, if there's the potential to manufacture drama, producers will do everything in their power to make it happen at the detriment of everyone. Maybe got a glimpse of that in Mythbusters with that Baghdad Battery hoopla.
I can recall that water slide from 3/4 of the way up. And it wasn't until he mentioned it, going from flopping around like a live fish to tucking it in, and how much better he landed than I thought he was going to.
I loved Mythbusters and the lack of scripting kept it fresh. I could have sworn I saw you in the Tassajarra Peets one day. I know you guys filmed near there, I wasnt sure enough to say hello :)

That underwater car episode carries some great significance with me. I got a job in the 90’s, a few weeks later I heard that I filled a job opening due to two employees dying in a car that accidentally drove into a pond and they got trapped inside. They required us to carry a window breaker on our keychain from that point onwards.

The underwater car story reminded me of learning to roll a kayak back upright after tipping over. In order to do this you have to get comfortable hanging upside down under water with your legs sealed inside the kayak, then organize your paddle and body position to sweep the paddle and right the kayak. When you are learning, you will fail to make it back upright many times. You are faced with the need to be submerged again with very little air and having to stay calm enough to reset your position and try again. It's incredibly unnerving and it's not an easy thing to learn. I remember many scary practice sessions alone on a lake, trying to learn this skill. There were some scary last minute escapes and it was always hard to return to trying again. I did eventually learn the skill and it became easy over time, but it was not easy to learn and the scary nature of learning is probably why most amateur kayakers can't roll their kayak back upright.
8:30 - I'm glad even you of all people have had this experience lol. I've met multiple famous/successful people that I admire as actors or creators, just as people, etc. Despite many people I've mentioned them to telling me that it doesn't sound that weird at all, I cringe about a couple of those interactions that I've had on a nearly weekly basis. I've tried to rationalize it like "I'm sure that's far from the weirdest fan interaction they've ever had" or "I'm one out of a million, I doubt they ever remember that" but the fact that you share this can hopefully ease my mind a bit haha.

It is amazing to me how involved you were with things that meant so much to me and my family that was NOT Mythbusters.
You and the entire team were real and I've always hated "Reality TV Shows" because of all the drama and learning later the truth that even the Tuttles drama was scripted turned me off their show.
But everything about Myth Busters was real and yes there were times I felt Jamie was irritated with you but only because you're two different people with markedly different approaches to problem solving.
Jamie was always thinking and you seemed to jump right in with both feet and what you saw as the first workable idea/solution. An acquaintance is like that and his favorite tool for dealing with pipe fittings or nuts and bolts was water pump pliers. Several times when I helped him out by repairing something, I had to replace fittings or nuts because he'd used his infinitly adjustable pliers.
As for your Tested channel on CZcams, I've learned so much about making and about myself, I wish I'd had much of the information 40 years ago and I'd ended up doing something that I would have loved, instead of just trying to survive.
Watching the infamous “Tory’s bike accident” episode will teach everyone it isn’t scripted
Adam Savage is one of the most normal and down to earth celebrities. He’s such a fantastically well rounded man. I hope to inspire some of his traits into my kids. Being humble, polite, curious, and willing to get their hands dirty. I really appreciate him as a person. Not just a “celebrity”.
MythBusters was such a special show! Entertaining and super educational!
I think your team did that well in planning the show out that you didn't need writers. By having the right people doing their respective jobs meant that everyone understood what needed to happen, making the explanation of each experiment to the camera seem so natural.

Except you're most likely not going to remember an episode of a TV show in the middle of a life or death situation. I think you're severely overestimating your ability to deal with panic and adrenaline.

“People who name my kids…” I know a lot about Adam, because he shares a lot of information with us on this channel and elsewhere in the inter webs. I know that his sons are twins, I know that Mrs. Don’t Try This is their step mom, and that they are adults who have their own lives and careers now. That being said, that sentence made me pause this and feel immensely creeped out. I have no idea what his kid’s names are, I frankly don’t want to know, it is none of my business if it is not a shared piece of information. The fact that people have taken the time to ferret that information out is unimaginable to me… I think the one instance where it wouldn’t feel creepy is if I met one of them in the real world and they told me, “oh yeah, my dad is Adam Savage.” Then I’d feel comfortable saying to Adam, “I met [insert name of Thing 1/Thing 2] last week.” Otherwise, ugh… people.

Has anybody ever asked this question, because I've always wondered it: Occasionally Mythbusters would do myths that involved evading the law (beat a breathalyzer, escape a police dog, etc.), and they conveniently always came up busted. Was there ever a time where you found a way to evade the law and weren't allowed to air it? I always thought it was bizarre how you accepted the massive breathalyzer reading after using mouthwash, and didn't recognize that it was because the mouthwash had alcohol in it and re-test with alcohol-free mouthwash.
iirc there were several myths that they had pretty scary birdies on their shoulder for, and there was most definitely one or two that were essentially "for legal reasons" cuts
The best moment of Mythbusters was the last scene, all 5 sitting around eating Swarma like the Science Avengers l, which just had their movie out.

As a kid I tried backward engineer by trail and error all kinds of cranes, cable cart systems, elevators( Lift's), cars (steering, suspentions, gearing, differential) with oldd(non techn.) Lego, Mechano, Fisher Technik and stuff found around the house. When tech. Lego came out it made doing this somewhat easier, I at school became an basic Electrician and was trained to design pcb's from the idea drawing the scematic and etching a single layer pcb, soldering the components, testing etc. Then I got the chance of being part of a special school pilot program called "The lathe project' me as Lower Tech. School Electrician could get a LTS mechanics diploma by building a small lathe from scratch, only thing we outsourced was heat hardening(im dutch sorry). some parts and some parts to the electric engine. Anywho at that time cnc was coming in and craftsmanship was replaced by 'cnc watchmen' so I never really got a job in that area. No regrets tho, I had an interesting life non the less. I totally get your fasination about all stuff you do and did, love how you show it.
But dont you think old craftsmanship is in decline because of all those cnc computer aided design modernized machining??
I remember the 1st task at 'project lathe' make a within 0.05 cm perfect cube by hand filing, I dare you to perform that just to prove that is'nt that easy. Old handcraftsmanship is in decline, the right to repair should be a given. Ppl like you are instrumental to keep old crafts alive, keep up the good work👍

All i can say is that it's comforting to hear that the dialog and scripts in Mythbusters wasn't scripted. I never felt it was and honestly one of the reasons I loved the show . I also can to relate to that survival instinct you felt when approaching the inevitable and the instinct took over. The car in the water myth intrigued me and by far was one of my favorite shows of all. I feel like i'm much better prepared if that tragedy ever happens to me. My knife with a belt cutter and window breaker never leaves my side when driving. Thanks for sharing so much of your insight, knowledge and behind the scenes with us!!!
There is a CZcamsr that does not appear on the shows anymore. They were shopping one day and someone they did not know came up to them and started talking to their kids like they were friends. It was a family CZcams channel and the kids were the third generation. This totally freaked them out, so they rarely show up on the family CZcams shows.
I have never met my hero's, understanding that it may be an otherworldly experience, I still accept boundaries, we are all human after all we should respect that.
That's crossing a line when someone says your kids names, I'd love to meet people I admire but I'm not gona try to and figure out their family members names that's crossing the line into stalking.

on a side note the skx007 seiko he is wearing is one of my favorite watches I own and gets the most wrist time for me
I need to go back and watch more myth busters tbh, I'm pretty sure I've seen every episode but it's really just such a good show, and it's probably 75% of the reason I'm so into engineering. Having no scrpit and instead just charismatic and enthusiastic hosts teaching you about obscure bits of science in explosive ways is a product for pure entertainment.

I wasn't quite famous, but I played a popular sport at a competitive level and was exposed to people far more well-known than myself on regualar basis. Having said that, I can completely relate to your sentiments a 8:22 - meeting someone you respect or admire or someone who just has a lot of status, and then saying something that was awkard or wished I would have approached differently. Most of the time, I am sure it was just in my head and I was overthinking the interaction after the fact. But there were a few occassions where I felt I got the cold shoulder fairly immeditely due to my intial comments or demeanor. Oh well, such is life- can't change the past. But it was a feeling I had not thought about in a long time!
I've only really had the "Why did I say that?!" fanboy moment with one person I met, which was Margaret Weis - one of the authors of the Dragonlance series. I actually used the phrase "I'd be ever so delighted"... I'm still not sure who I turned into for that moment in time.

~4.00 I call that squirrel brain. Sometimes you are going to have a bad fall but squirrel brain kicks in and makes sure things are aligned so you land safely and relatively unscathed. Having done it a few times by accident, I found the imagery from Mark Rober's CZcams slow mo's about squirrels and squirrel feeders explained the phenomenom quite well.
