There's one comment where I disagree with you, but it's only a matter of musical taste and artistic choices, not a matter of technique. I absolutely love when Dimash incorporates the traditional Turkic melisma that reflects his ethnicity. It's actually one of my favorite things he does and I wish he would do a lot more of it. It would break my heart if he began westernizing that.

I've always wondered - when he does the traditional melisma it sounds very nice to my ears, as a person who is not very educated on music and who was born in China it reminds me a bit of Xinjiang or Mongolia-music, it's kind of familiar and nice. Funnily enough I've been living in Germany for decades now and still cannot get used to turkish music at all. It seems to me that they incorporate some traditional elements in all their pop songs which I hear from time to time because of the many people living here with turkish origin, and it literally hurts me. Actually when I tried to listen to a turkish (not turkic) song Dimash sang I couldn't listen to it for more than 5 seconds, and I always love everything he does except rap. I wonder where the difference is...

About the middle eastern sounds, I think it is also in traditional Kazakistan music and he is trying to promote his culture to the world. That could be why it's almost always featured in his singing.

After the competition "I am a Singer" they had a final episode for the contestants to sing without competing and Dimash sang his favorite song "Give Me Love" that was mellow, soft, relaxing, and with no high notes. I think he does like to relax sometimes but the pressure from the audience expecting high notes from him makes him do that every time. That song has no wow factor though but beautiful. Only one thing I would like to point out that is I really don’t want him to become completely westernised and loose his uniqueness. He is giving us a taste of fusion music which I love and I think most of his fans will agree with me. That is his signature style. It will be a shame if he is forced to loose that by the western audience. Love from UK.

In fact, I had already moved on to Bocelli, Brightman etc... Etc... When I "discovered" this guy! After all, how.many times can you actually listen to "More than a feelin'" or "Hot blooded?" Believe me, I understand the "desire" for some scratch/growl. I used to struggle in finding guys who could grab their nads and sing some of my songs BUT... If I want that "western/blues or rasp... I gotta few THOUSAND guys to choose from! This Eastern sound is new, refreshing and damn amazing to me and I DO NOT want to "westernize" this guy in the slightest!! Demash etc... With Zeppelin etc... I don't think he will ever be a rocker or anything like it. I think that Pavarotti opened the door to combining of styles when he sung songs together with contemporary musicians: Zucchero, Sting... and he actually made new style. Andra Bocelli is not totally opera singer: Time to say goodby, Canto della Terra etc...it is popular music, at least in Europa. Freddie Mercury sung with Montserrat Caballé etc. This performances changed the music even, if we did not noticed. But they did.

    Dear Vocal Coach,
This video was a compilation of high notes which is not only what Dimash does when he is singing. He is a man who does not like to be locked in one style, and does not like to always do the same thing. He likes to experiment (he also tried to rap in one of his songs, he can play: the piano, kazak traditional guitar, drums). Dimash also likes reinterpreting original songs (he studies composition) and also study the meaning of the songs before choosing them. If you want more songs he performed that use more his lower register, you have these two songs :
    - Traditional Kazakh song, Daididau (here you have the whole background story of the song, including english subtitles when dimash sings) : czcams.com/video/tOs7rkn36L0/video.html
    - Late Autumn (a Japanese song which was translated into Mandarin, here you have the background story with English subtitles when dimash sings) : czcams.com/video/FXQ58U-Eddg/video.html
So these are very different songs that focus more on emotions than on showing singing abilities

Ken is the best vocal coach on this site by far. The best blends of knowledge, critique, complimenting actual perfect style or technique, and an actual coach who can sing or demonstrate the things he or she is trying to coach or explain to or about a performance/vocalist

You might like to see his duet with Wang Li he is in operatic Baritone rang. Songs I love of his are The Love of tired swans, Sinful Passions, his Chinese songs Late Autumn and Daybreak which are both emotional songs, Dimash. Gloria Wu’s Channel has back stories and English subtitles which is nice though I only watch them after I have enjoyed the song without. I do like his version of hello which has the middle eastern flair. I get your point as always with the different tones. Dimash’s number one priority is to honour his country and heritage so that others learn about Kazakhstan. He also wants to fuse different forms of folk music into modern/classical music. He often performs around the world with traditional Kazakhstan musicians from his university and wears astern styles or traditional dress. So while I agree in the sense I would love to see some of what you are speaking of, I also want him to stay true to his goals. A conundrum there 😊

I also like his middle range more - I can focus on it and appreciate it. While his high notes... they give me physical sensations, my skin goes goose, muscles on my head tense... it's like flying down a rollercoaster hill - you want it, but not all the time.

If you want to hear Dimash in a soft and deep and stirring vocal (love song, of course!), do a search for Dimash Give Me Love. He sings this song in Chinese as well as Kazakh and on several of the videos that show up in the search, you'll find English subtitles. There's a good one at Bastau 2017; Singer 2017 (a "bonus" song of sorts done after the competition was over but called Episode 14); and another at Choose Big Star Show.
Good examples of Dimash in a mostly low range mode with little acrobatic action.

I really like you Ken, but I wasn't aware that Slovakia or Czech Republic are considered Baltic or middle-eastern in singing approach. I was raised in Slovakia, but I never heard anyone do those type of runs over there. Slovakia btw. is the exact geographical middle of Europe (and yes it bugs me when people consider it east :-D)

Tomas M, I'm certainly not speaking for Ken, but as an American we're not especially taught about these areas as much as others so I can personally claim some ignorance, but I'm swiftly learning since Dimash hit my radar last year! We'll do better. :)

I’m from Poland and have the same feelings hearing stuff like that. Lack of knowledge and stereotypes bug me. I live in Canada now and teach people about the geography all the time. And sometimes about the history too.
Also I will never forget some conversation with one Canadian:
C: yes we are not very good with geography, nobody knows where are those tiny countries like I.e. Kazakhstan...”
Me: Kazakhstan is not a small country actually. It’s one of the largest countries in the world 😁
      His face was priceless 😂
Guess I will just keep teaching and I’m glad most of people are open and willing to learn.

@@emis.4987 lol thats funny. I didn't really like Geography myself when I was in school. When I was younger, me and my siblings used to play this game of how fast can we list all the country names in the world that has a "stan" at the end. Otherwise, I probably would sound as ignorant as that man lol. Now that I'm older, I wish I had more interest in Geography when I was in school because it really bugs me that I know less about these things.

💁 jajajajaja
