    Works decent for the price, but its very difficult to erase. Need some sort of rubbing alcohol. and even then it takes a good 5 min to really erase completely. Also the board doesnt come with any sort of "gloss" like a normal white board, which means it can be easily scratched. IF the surface gets scratched, the expo marker becomes permanent. Overall still pleased with the final product. Bought a board and some drywall mounts for about $30 total, which definitely beats $400 for a factory made board of equal size. I'm going to explore different gloss coats to further improve performance!

  • @NMranchhand
    @NMranchhand Před 2 lety +4

    Well, that’s right as rain, and great of you to share. Let me add one: even a single pass with a good hard paste wax (Carnuba dries very hard) followed by a quite thorough buff-off, will improve the performance of that box-store melamine coating to the level of the most expensive whiteboard out there by filling in the micro pores in the coating. Erasing will be MUCH easier and more complete.
    And, if you ever end up with some “ghosting” of images that builds up over time (ALL white boards to it), then a wipe down with ethyl alcohol (Everclear, methylated spirits, methyl alcohol, Denatured Alcohol) will get all boards back to brand new)

    • @coffeebooksmotherhood

      How do you buff it out? Just a rag?

    • @NMranchhand
      @NMranchhand Před 2 lety +1

      @@coffeebooksmotherhood Yes, a clean one. Just apply a thin coat and buff as soon as a light haze appears, only about 5 or 10 minutes. If you walk away and don’t buff for, say, a half hour, you’ll find it pretty hard sledding to get it buffed off, but it’ll work all the same.

I'm also going to write his daily tasks and reminder for him as he has ADD and struggles with remembering to do things. When he has a plan to follow and something to reference he does much better and I'm trying to teach him to write things down so he can remember them. Lord knows i have to 😂 I hope this will help. Great DIY video, Michael! This board is great for personal use and we are fans of saving money whenever possible. However, not all dry erase surfaces are created equally. If you are a school or office that uses your whiteboard all day long, a porcelain steel surface is ideal to last up to heavy wear and prevent what we in the industry call "ghosting". We too sell melamine surface boards, but only recommend those for light or occasional use.

  • @scottxfactoraudio8799
    @scottxfactoraudio8799 Před 4 lety +6

    So, just how much usage did you get before having to re-surface or replace your whiteboard? Typically the one's costing $300 and up at that size are aluminum framed with either a plate glass over a white substrate or a glazed ceramic, non-porous surface. So that they can last for years and thousands of uses. Everytime you clean that whiteboard you used you abrade the surface just a bit and it's only a, "Semi-porous", material to begin with. Do you think maybe a thin "Lexan" film (Maybe another $20 for a .004" film, 48" x 96"), held against the whiteboard by static vacuum might last longer? I was also thinking about possibly a few coats of polyurethane over the board "Polyurethane is TOUGH!". OR just using a thicker Lexan sheet and painting the backside which I'd mount on maybe 1/4" plywood as a backing. I need to build one and am wondering what you ended up doing.

    I realize this video is old, but I noticed that there are horizontal wavering texture lines in the hardboard. Does that affect writing or erasing? Also, how easy would you say it is to erase the ink on it? Does it take just a cloth, or does it need water or the expo spray to come off?

    I'm not sure if it is just the markers I have (they were a thin tiped cheap set from Staples), but when I write on it, the ink beads up and then the actual writing isn't that dark, compared with a smaller actual whiteboard calendar I have. I'll be picking up a bigger set of the name brand ones tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. I figure, worse case, I'll have to buy a $25 can of whiteboard paint and paint it, still way cheaper for a 4'x6' board on my office wall.
