    And this is why we use muzzles in lurcher racing. Sweetest dogs in the world can get a bit snappy when another dog looks like it’s going to steal their “prey”, even if what they are hunting is a few strips of plastic attached to a string (Also not ideal if they manage to catch the lure). Have seen dogs trying to fight much more than this, but thankfully muzzles prevented damage being done.
    Love seeing dogs bred to run given chance to hit top speed, as long as it’s done safely. Unfortunately greyhound racing gave it a bad rep running loads of dogs at once, causing nasty pile ups/crashes leading to serious injuries/deaths and obviously the sick issue of ‘disposing’ of dogs that don’t win.
    Just glad I got into lurcher showing/racing, as got to see how it can be done safely, doing 2-3 dog heats, with winners moving to next round. Plus with no prize money/gambling no one’s given the incentive to dump/kill/rehome slower dogs. It’s just a fun chance for a little friendly competition and watch dogs having fun charging at top speed! I might have been completely opposed to dog racing, if I hadn’t seen how it can be done right and how much fun dogs have doing it.
    Also helped doing it with my 2, as showed me that there is no way to force them into doing it and doing it well! My 1st rescue boy had no interest initially, but after just watching racing with him next to me, he suddenly started getting caught up in excitement and when I decided to enter again he flew after lure! My 2nd girl I got as a pup and she didn’t need to watch or any training to know what to do and right out the gate she was beating mature repeat champ dogs in her first races!

      I'm a greyhound owner (and he was definitely neglected by his owners) so this is really interesting to hear about the lurchers. I like the idea of fun runs because god knows my lad loves to run and as well loves meeting other longdogs of any variety, so it's great to hear that lurchers have this going on. The greyhound racing industry is an absolute cancer, as most things are where money gets involved, ethics just go out the window.

    • @dredbird9951
      @dredbird9951 Před rokem +2

      I think whenever you get the kind of money involved that racing does (horses, dogs), abuse and corruption are a feature rather than a bug. A guy with some hounds, just a regular dude who doesn't do it as a job, he loves the sport and spends a ton of off-track time with his dogs, is a completely different situation than the mass breeding, doping, and discarding of neglected animals used as a commodity that you see in the dog racing industry.
      Folk engaging in a hobby with their animal, that's just wholesome.

      @@dredbird9951 Lurching and coursing (or lure/hare coursing) is def a hobby that’s wholesome and isn’t like “traditional” racing where abuse is rampant. Iirc they’re AKC sports that dogs and owners can compete in for titles and sometimes small cash prizes. I’m not super sure since I don’t have a sighthound, but these sports are ones to support ❤
      Although, after our German shepherd I do kinda want a borzoi, just such beautiful dogs I’ve always loved them.

      michael jenkins - Close!
      They are actually Borzoi, or Russian Wolfhounds.
      Aren't they impressive?
      And fierce, too.
      They used to go out on horseback with several of these dogs, and loose them to run down wolves.
      The Borzoi would run up along side of a fleeing wolf, and grab it on the neck, and drag it down, holding it until the horseback riders caught up, and dispatched it. :(

      Borzoi came from cold, snowy Russia.
      Salukis come from the desert, so they have short body hair, but still have heavily-feathered ears and tail.

    Is it me or doesn't it seem that extremely fast? Maybe it's the camera angle, but i've seen Dutch Shepherds with a much more ferocious sprint start (lower top speed of course), and Dobermans that weren't off by that much in top speed. About as fast as the dog that came last in this vid i'd say.

      borzois are a lot larger than you'd think compared to greyhounds and the breeds you mentioned so i think it may be that they're covering more ground than you think

      They’re strides are much larger making them look slower. They are definitely faster than Dutch and Dobermans

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy Před 7 měsíci

      Borzoi coats are very flowy, so they look a lot slower than they really are. If you took away their coats you'd see just how fast they are. Compared to a champion whippet like Spitfire who's barely 20-22" tall, Borzois can get up to nearly a yard tall and just as long when they're sitting normally. With a fully extended spine, a Borzoi is nearly 5 feet long. That's MASSIVE.

    • @samanthacallaway2276
      @samanthacallaway2276 Před 4 měsíci

      Sighthounds are deceptive, like thoroughbred horses their long legs and sleek torso make them look slow. But these traits allow for huge strides that allow them to run much faster than other breeds.
      Sighthounds can run 30-40+ MPH with mid-high 30’s being “cruising speed” for larger breeds to keep up with prey for some distances, for borzoi that would’ve been wolves. Sighthounds can run (in short distances) of 40-45 mph when motivated like chasing after a lure. They just don’t look like they’re fast when they’re next to each other, just like thoroughbred horses.
      But when you put them next to other breeds? You see just how fast they are.
      Dutch shepherds run at about 27mph while Doberman run to about 32mph, this makes sense when you look at their bodies. Doberman have a body shape more similar to a Sighthound while the shepherd doesn’t.

      Your comment inspired me to look it up, and I don’t think this is professional racing like greyhounds; apparently there’s a triathlon hosted by the Borzois Club of America (BCOA), and races are a big part of it. I can’t tell if this is that competition, but the BCOA website says they also do an obedience/rally event, and their page on animal welfare for borzois seems like they care about how they’re treated. All from a short dip into Google, so take it with a pinch of salt.
