Easiest surgery ever. I was under twilight anesthesia and heard the conversations of the doctor and staff. They said I had a little smile on my face the entire time. Mine was in my chest.
Before each chemo treatment I applied lidocaine cream to the port area to numb it up before the needle prick (about 30 minutes prior). Covered it with a small piece of plastic wrap and off I went to treatment.
The removal of the port was a tad painful. I did not have any type of anesthesia. They did inject lidocaine to numb the area. That was actually quite painful but not for more than about 10 seconds. The doc did a great job stitching up the small incision and I have about a one inch scar that is barely visible. Happy to see it go. It always felt like a misplaced bone.
As a MAN who is about to get chemo for breast cancer, I've been doing a lot of research as this is all new to me. This is the best video I've found on getting a port. Thank you!
Glad to hear it helped!
Had both IV port and feeding tube during my cancer treatments. Both were very beneficial and I am thankful I had them. With a feeding tube you have the responsibility of flushing it often and keeping it dry. That's very bothersome especially when you are so weak from treatments that you can hardly walk or stand. However, if I hadn't had the feeding tube I probably wouldn't have made it because I couldn't swallow due to the radiation treatments on my neck. Finished treatments a few months ago, had CT scans, and am cancer free so far. Eating well now and doing well. Had my tube and port removed last week. My recommendation, due to my experience, is to have both procedures if your physician recommends it. Could save your life.
Had a port put in before chemo. It was a Godsend. The procedure was a piece of cake. I felt it there for a few weeks then mostly did not feel it.
Sometimes my shirt would rub against it so I would put a bandaid on it for a few days. My port is my "buddy ".
I was told that the only ones who can use my port are the infusion nurses for chemo/immunotherapy.
Thank you for your explanations. My chemo port went in one week ago, I was completely out during the procedure and it's in my chest. That area was red and very warm for two days, but seems to be healing nicely. Stil covered with the original dressing and I see the Oncologist next Monday. Chemo starts the next day. Definitely not looking forward to that, but not much choice. Breast cancer.
I’m so sorry.
Best of luck.
I had only local and walked out of the OR myself. Easy peasy. I loved my Port (especially for AC chemo). But I will say my scar burns randomly after my port was removed in October - almost like it’s ripping open. I call it my Harry Potter scar.
I had a double port and it was better than getting a bunch of IVs but one of the sides was at a weird angle so it would take at least 3 tries to get accessed. It ended up getting infected and I went into sepsis and they did emergency surgery to remove it. Not so fun!
My doctor tried to avoid my having a port. After I had had chemo for a while, it got harder and harder for the nurses to find a vein they could use. One time it took 5 nurses and numerous pokes to finally get a needle in for my treatment. One of the nurses said, "If you're going to have more treatments, you need to have a port." I asked for a port right away. It made all the difference. Now it is just one stick for the blood they have to draw and the treatment. Win-win.
I was put to sleep for my port insertion.
I just found your channel because I unfortunately was just diagnosed with Stage 1b3 Cervical Cancer and I am going to have a port put in tomorrow on the 15th so I can start Chemo next week.I am going to be awake during the procedure but put in a twilight mode so this is going to be an interesting experience.
I’m so sorry! I was diagnosed Stage 2B cervical cancer, basically today. Until today’s exam under anesthesia, I thought I’d be getting a hysterectomy today……until they found it has spread to the parametrium and they couldn’t do the surgery. Instead, I’m being put back under tomorrow and having a port put in, then 8 weeks of mon - fri radiation, 1x a week chemo. I’m so scared and so sad. I have a 7 year old little girl. I don’t want to miss anything 😢
I’m only having three more chemo sessions. We can only use veins in one of my arms. I’m trying to decide if I need a port. I have an appointment to have one placed.
Had my chemo port done today under local anaesthesia. The entire procedure was painless. After the procedure when the anaesthesia wore off, there was only a dull ache when I turned my neck. The doctor said this is normal and will go away in a few days. Before the procedure, I was very nervous and fearful but it turned out to be unfounded. So, if you are going for the procedure or thinking of whether you should do it, this may encourage you. I had delayed this procedure out of fear until I completed 5 cycles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy by which time most of the veins on both my arms were already damaged. I should have done it earlier when the nurses who administered the chemotherapy advised me to go for it.
❤ Thank you. I'm having one tomorrow put in.
I hope this helps ease the stress
Just had mine. Very easy.
Thanks 🙏
I had a port put in 12/6/2023 bc I was having difficulty with some of the nurses putting in IVs for chemo as it was painful at times. Port insertion was easy -Recovery was good, . I was sore for 10 -13 days- each day til no pain at all. I had n Chemo 12/19 & used lidocaine (2 coats) on it and felt nothing when the nurse put the IV in the port. They also took blood -no problems. To shower the first 2 weeks I used Saran Wrap w/ tape . I’ll be doing TX for a year plus - so the port has made my life MUCH easier
Doctors love $$$$$$$
There should also be someone on the OR Staff who can access a Port!
Sorry for my English, but part of what u say I disagree with that, I have port in my chest the catheter in my neck I felt discomfort sometimes specially when I stretch my arm and sneeze hard I felt pain and when I sleep also I have 2thick pillows to sleep better. I have mine for 16 days already coz I’m going to start my chemo this coming Thursday the 11th of April
I was put to sleep to have my port inserted, and i already completed my chemo rounds and I'm currently doing immunotherapy, but i still get my blood drawn by vain.
My port is in my chest and I was definitely not awake during procedure. They said I was lightly anesthesized----
Hey.. amy, I’m 13 weeks almost 14 weeks pregnant so will they be able to help me not be in pain when they do the placement? I’ve been through a lot with my cancer.. draining fluid out of the lungs was enough for me I don’t want to go through anymore pain😢
Praying that you are feeling better and for your healing in Jesus' Name.
I just got my port, 2 days ago and it scares me. its in my chest. i make videos on my channel to help me cope, but its not working. Any suggestions on how to cope with it? i cant sleep because i toss and turn with back ache (which is usual) but the pain of the port wakes me up and i freak out thinking im moving it out of place...
Sorry you had to deal with that. How are you doing, now?
❤❤❤
You mentioned popcorn is it microwave ?
no - air popped
Can I do it after two cycles
I believe so, but how many cycles will you have total?
@@teamdrake1225 8cycles
Yes - it is possible to have a port placed at any time
Arm port is really a PICC line, isn’t it?
Nope. A PICC line is external access (sticks out of your arm) port is all internal
