  • Going through one of my favorite all time band's discographies - ENSLAVED!
I rank all the albums from my least favorite to my favorite. This is an updated re-ranking to include their newest album Heimdal. I had previously ranked their discography a long time ago, and had some requests to re-rank with the new album included.

I started going through old school black metal bands that I for one reason or another hadn't listened properly yet and OH MY GOD Enslaved fucking rules??? I discovered them three days ago and have already listened to the first 4 albums and demos twice. Frost and Eld are INSANE!!! They're VERY quickly becoming one of my favourite bands and I trust your rankings as I would have my top three in the same order (so far) :)
    Great video!! ^^

Cheers, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, and are liking the albums! They definitely shift their style quite a bit over the course of the rest of their albums, but ya for me those early albums are insanely good and easily my favorites by them too!!

Excellent list Eld is so good and is worthy of people's no.1 album. I always thought I was missing a good chunk of their discography but after watching this I think I've got the majority of them. 🍻

Great video buddy, yet another band that I have missed. This will give me a good idea of where to start!

Vikingligr Veldi is the first Enslaved album I've ever heard and it will forever be my favorite!
It's hard for me to decide between Frost and Eld, it really depends on the mood.
Blodhemn, Below the lights, Vertebrae, Axioma would all be in my top half. It would be too hard and exhausting to rank them all since they are all quality albums!
Btw Isoders Dronning is my ringtone for the past year or so, one of my favorite songs of theirs.
Also, in my opinion, Yggdrasil is their most underappreciated song - it's so beautiful, I wish they had made more songs in that spirit.

    • @HammerheartMetalReviews
      @HammerheartMetalReviews  Před rokem

Awesome! That is a great choice for your ringtone!! Love that song so much. And agreed on Yggdrasil, love the folky viking type songs too, wish they would have explored a few more songs in that style too!

Ya such a killer discography, it is so hard to rank! I really enjoy Monumension also (even though I had it lower in my ranking). Not sure why it gets so much hate, it has some of my favorite Enslaved songs on it. I guess there's a few weird tracks too, but ya I love how each album does something slightly different

Stoked to see Axioma Ethica Odini getting some love! Such a hard ranking, all of their albums are truly good, here's an attempt at mine:
    1. Mardraum 2. Axioma Ethica Odini 3. Blodhemm 4. Eld 5. Vikingligr Veldi 6. Frost 7. Isa 8. Utgard 9. Heimdal 10. Vertebrae 11. Below the Lights 12. In Times 13. Riitiir 14. Ruun 15. E 16. Monumension
Really 4-6 and 7-10 are interchangeable groups for me, but like you said, they are all great and hold special places for me!

What a tough band to rank. I said a few weeks ago (on your Heimdal review) that the new album might just be my new # 1. I enjoy every album. Frost and Eld were my introduction, back in the day, so those 2 hold a special place. Mardraum is in my top 5.....this would hours of thought! I really dig their EP as well... 🤔 🍻 Cheers! Thank you for all these great videos.

This discography is ridiculously hard to rank, no even average albums with this amount of releases is just crazy.
I only really got into these guys in the last 3 or 4 years so they're all fairly new to me.
    Here's how I rank them.
    16. Blodhemn
    15. Monumension
    14. In Times
    13. Ruun
    12. E
    11. Utgard
    10. Vertebrae
    9. Heimdal
    8. Frost
    7. Below the Lights
    6. Vikingligr Veldi
    5. Riitiir
    4. Mardraum
    3. Eld
    2. Isa
    1. Axioma Ethica Odini

So I figured I'd have some fun and compare your two lists. How much has your taste changed in 11 months? Not much, really. The biggest deviations are for the two albums Utgard and Ruun, who both fell down four places on your list. The greatest climber on your list this time is Riitiir (from 12th to 9th). Vikingligr Veldi climbing from 5th to 3rd is also pretty significant (well deserved, what a masterpiece it is).
Just like you, I thoroughly enjoy all these albums. My favorite ever release of theirs is actually Hordanes Land, but I won't include it in an album ranking (still has to be mentioned though, Ivar was 13/14 years old when he wrote it, which is just mindblowing).
    My personal ranking:
    16. Vertebrae
    15. Monumension
    14. Utgard
    13. Heimdal (It's almost too early to rank this one yet. Safe to say I really do like it)
    12. Riitiir
    11. Mardraum
    10. Below the Lights
    9. E
    8. In Times
    7. Frost
    6. Ruun
    5. ISA (ISA and Ruun are really nostalgic for me as it was around this era I became a massive fan of theirs. I really listened the shit out of these two records)
    4. Blodhemn
    3. Vikingligr Veldi
    2. Eld (Opening track is my favorite Enslaved song alongside Slaget i Skogen Bortenfor)
    1. Axioma Ethica Odini (what a fucking masterpiece)

Interesting that my list didnt change too much. I am surprised I only had Vikingligr Velid in 5th before! Should have been higher! Agreed on Hordanes Land, man that is a killer release. Great ranking as well! Such a tough band to rank

Great ranking man! I've gotta listen to some of this band's albums, probably the first 3 would be the way to go? I have In times and Utgard on my albums list currently, but maybe the first 3 might be a better place to start? Cheers man 🤘🏻🤘🏻

    • @HammerheartMetalReviews
      @HammerheartMetalReviews  Před rokem +1

Cheers man, thanks! Cant really go wrong with any of the albums, will probably just come down to personal taste. The first 3 are definitely more in the black metal vein, where the later albums are way more progressive, while still always keeping their unique style in place. Anyways, happy listening!

@@HammerheartMetalReviews You're welcome mate! Ah ok that's fair enough man, I understand. It might be best to try their early work first then maybe check out the new stuff to get a feel for how their sound has changed. Wow, Heimdal is much higher for me. But then I did only discovered them with Utgard and went back from there. And apart from Eld I'm not the biggest fan from their earliest stuff. And I'm more on the atmospheric black side, so Heimdal really appeals to me.
    1. Below the Lights (The Dead Stare, As Fire swept..., A Darker Place - Perfect)
    2. Heimdal (Behind the mirror, Forest Dweller, Caravans, Heimdal - until now it's album of the year)
    3. Mardraum (strange album, but so interesting)
    4. In Times (title track, Building with Fire)
    5. Utgard (my first album by Enslaved. The reason, why I now have everything on Vinyl)
    6. Eld (793)
    7. Monumension (Convoys to Nothingness, Vision)
    8. Axioma Ethica Odini (Giants, Lightning, The Beacon)
    9. E (very consistent, but not much stand out tracks)
10.ISA (mixed bag, some stuff outstanding, like Yggrasil, some songs are average)
11.Riitiir (Root of the Mountain, Thoughts like Hammer)
12.RUUN (good album, but no outstanding tracks like on ISA or Riitir)
13.Vertebrae (good, but quite similar to ISA or Ruun)
14.Frost (the title is program here. Cold and aggressive)
15.Blodhemn (Pure BM, not my kind of music)
    16.Vikingr Veldi (Same here)

@@HammerheartMetalReviews Agreed. They are so productive and consistnt. Hard to think about another band this century, that reaches the same level. Maybe Amorphis, but they have at least 2 or 3 mediocre albums.
