Here is an example of how influence Iverson had,not just in the USA but world wide. I'm from Slovenia,a small country in the center of europe. And I still remember when my neighbour who never played basketball, never watched basketball went out and got himself an Iverson jersey and on top of that he rocked cornrows just like IA. That's how big this guy was. In a small village in a small european country,a white teenager wanted to be like Iverson.

The clip of AI crossing up MJ is easily a top 5 moment in my memory of being a young fan. “Michael says no, Allen says yes!!” Like everyone, I loved watching MJ mess guys up in highlights, so seeing a 6’0 (more like 5’10) young guy like Iverson go after MJ and get a highlight on the GOAT...still love watching it all these years later.

I am old enough that I watched Iverson in his prime and while I wasn't a big fan I have to defend him. Yes he was a volume guy, low efficiency but look at those Philly rosters. AI had to take those shots. He was their only scorer, shot creator, play maker for years. At their peak they had great defensive role players around Allen but no one with any substantial offensive skill. The fact that he was able to get the Sixers to the finals was a testament to his heart, toughness and skill. He was warrior.

    • @ibezzant

@Xavier McDaniel not on that finals team. They did have Mutumbo who'd give you 12 a game but was never a guy you could give the ball to in the post and have him go one on one and score. And their other offensive option with Aaron McKie. Mind blowing.

Possible reasons? Gambling on nba games. Not paying mobsters back. Plenty of talks about all this since the 90s. Bill is lying for views or telling the truth and doesn't believe what Stern said (the way stern said it at least). And why would anyone believe that a Goat in a sport, in his prime, would quit when winning was the most important thing to him. Also another possibility of sterns reasoning....no punishment=issue getting leaked. Give punishment and camouflage it would keep the money rolling in. Mj scandal would've killed the league and *everyone's* money whether he was punished or not. Was Stern lying? Was Bill? I dont know but don't say never when you don't know shit

Donaghy always discusses how him and his ref friends wouldn’t give him calls in order t influence games for gambling and because they didn’t like him. He was one of the players most negatively impacted by those crooked refs from that era.

The problem with AI is he did more for the culture for the NBA than the actual game itself. His existence in the league is incredibly important, what he did for opening up the image of the NBA to more than what a white person would hope a player was like. But at the same time, if a clone of Iverson existed today and had the exact same style of play and career, just with no cultural significance, he wouldn't be anywhere near the same level of reverence.
So you can't really rank him in the same way as everyone else.

Picking Ray Allen and Steve Nash doesn't mean he doesn't love Iverson. I LOVED Iverson growing up, still do, and I would probably pick Nash and Allen.
