Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, has come out swinging recently. First it was at the Google Play Store, now it's out for Apple's App Store too. Sure, Epic Games says it's about them banning Fortnite from their stores, but I think there is something much BIGGER going on. What exactly? Well, it's written plainly in their own legal documents - they want to open their OWN app store and to do so, they need to break down the monopolies already dominating the markets.

I know I'm late but this is by far my favorite sort of content from this channel. Breaking down real life business decisions, algorithm trends, etc, it's fascinating.

This WAS very interesting because everyone is just talking about the basics while MatPat literally read and entire legal document to see what’s going on. Epic was also very smart by giving players a free harvesting tool as well as giving people a certain amount V-Bucks back to them depending on how many they bought over the last couple of months, witch made people get onboard with Epic to get rid of Apple. Some CZcamsrs who collect skins and buy the 100 dollar pack of V-Bucks often (13,550 V-Bucks) got over 10,000 V-Bucks back in return. I would love to see MatPat do more of this.

Dude keep doing this. Talking about the stuff companies do is actually really informative on what companies are actually trying to do instead of this picture of we want to give this because we want to. Instead this reminds us that that games aren’t made because but because people A) make a profit or B) just make something for the enjoyment of others. Showing that companies may not always be our friend but just trying to make a quick buck.

For example Steam charges 20-30%, GOG actually recodes old games to work on modern PC's. Gamestop is literally retail and its a totally different business model. Humble Bundle only takes 15% for their store, Discord store is 10%, Itch.io is whatever the dev sets. Mac OS only charges 3%.
It is an arbitrary number that only consoles truly deserve.

Google might get away but I think Apple is getting a fair bit of it lost to the lawsuit.
Epic's intentional breaking of the terms of service was a very deliberate move to force Apple's hand - being removed from the App Store gave Epic the perfect publicity platform to start this whole thing. I wouldn't think for a second that there's something they didn't think through. Remember, 60-something page legal documents don't appear out of thin air - they take a team of lawyers a solid few weeks... Epic had the document ready to go because they knew how Apple would respond to the price change.
Also, I'll agree with what Pandize said that there really isn't such a thing as unsuccessful outcome for Epic. Worst case scenario: they lose the lawsuit, and Fortnite users jump ship from Apple devices in favour of Android where they can still sideload the game, meaning Epic still wins in the public eye (which is the important part). Best case scenario: Epic wins the lawsuit, and they get what they want. There really isn't a 'lose' scenario for them.
Plot twist: This was on purpose and they are going to partner up and it will be more "Epic" (pun not intended) if they sued each other.

I'm legitimately interested in hearing more on these types of theories. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE me some video game lore, but it's also interesting to see the business/legal side of things, even if I don't always understand it right away. I'd also like to see you cover the problems with Epic (don't get me wrong, Epic is a big innovator, but their partnership with Tencent and Tencent's less scrupulous behavior should really be mentioned). So take this as my vote for a "yes" to more theories like these and more videos on the subject of Epic!
