- Video shows our visit to Mrs Smiths Cottage in Navenby Lincolnshire.
The Cottage is thought to date from the 1830’s a humble, homely cottage that provides unique access and insight into the life of a rural Lincolnshire community. Mrs Smith was a well-known and much-loved character at the heart of Navenby.
Mrs Smith lived in her cottage until she was 102 and remains as she left it. You find out what life was like through the century from extracts shared from her diary about local history, families and secrets. Learn about Hilda Smith, an independent and strong character and find out how she lived through the seasons and found joy in the simple things.
Run by the local council access is for a small fee with the cottage open Fridays to Mondays. prebooking on the website is advisable as the cottage is small .

Imagine a detached house costing £75. My mum & dad's cost £6k in 1966. Prices have certainly shot up. My grandad had an outside loo, and that was the early 1970s. It's not that long ago in our history, really. Fancy taking those stairs at 102. I just hope I'm mobile and have all my marbles at that age. What a beautiful time capsule. Thank you for sharing.
Good morning yes it's such a lovely little cottage so cosy. The ladders were pretty hard to negotiate for us so she must have been pretty agile amazing. It really does feel like she is still here and so nice you are invited to sit down and take it in and look through the photos. @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling I think that generation were hardy folk, the NHS didn't exist until she was 56, so there would be no trips to A&E , a doctor's visit would be costly. She would eat produce she grew, or neighbours gave her, a much better diet than today.I admire her tenacity, we need more like her today.
My parents bought a brand new house in the country for £1k in 1968.
My 18th century stone cottage is rather larger than this house but many things tally. I know from old documents that it changed hands in the 1950s for £500 - far more affordable to a family on the average household income of the period than it would be today (£300 to £350K). As far as I am aware from former neighbours in the 1970s it still had an outside bog, no bathroom and no installed heating for hot water. Water was still heated on a range in the kitchen, because I used to know the plumber who installed the first plumbed-in hot water system as an apprentice.
I'm a Londoner went to Cornwall St.just in late 1970s cottage 2 down 1 up ..Bath in bedroom...stream outside with duck's 😊so this video 👌

I grew up with an outdoor toilet. I remember the wind blowing snow around my ankles in the night, wearing just nightclothes and slippers. Different world back then. My nan’s house was posh, it had an indoor toilet! But she didn’t have a washing machine, she washed everything by hand, and had a huge mangle to wring the water. Her house looked a lot like this, so it was so lovely watching this, taking me back to being a small child. Thank you for sharing, I intend to visit some day 😊

Amazing. When I was a little boy of around 5yrs old I remember travelling with mum to see and old lady. . . . . Mrs Knight. . . 93yrs old and she was the same. . . A sitting room with coal fire, kitchen with a coal range and stairs to the one bedroom. No bathroom an outside privi, no fridge, just a big thick slab of marble which kept the food cool, no TV although she did have a radio and she sang a lot too.
She had been a dancing instructor and was very slim.
I have edited this as I have just looked through some things mum said I should keep as my sister would throw them out and I have her daughters death cert (I had no idea she had a daughter - she died when I was 3yrs) aged 53yrs from pneumonia and the next year her husband aged 83. I would have been 4yrs when he died in 1964 and have no recollection of him.
I have some "tickets or passes" to various dances in which she would give demonstrations of popular dances of the era (dated 1912 to 1924). So interesting. (thanks mum)
I have a photo of her in 1924 stood by the side of her MG or similar and a picture of another car she owned and one of her stood beside a small radial engined aeroplane . . . absolute tear away apparently. We visited once or twice a week sometimes more if she was ill or we had a Dr's appointment. Our Dr was 5mins from her little cottage.
This video brought all that back. I can actually see it very vividly. . . quite a shock really. Thank you so much for that.

Mrs. Smiths had a long and full life. The house and the garden are beautiful, and I saw many things in it in my grandmother's house, who was born at the very beginning of the 20th century. The price of the house is interesting, it is hard to imagine for us today ☺️❤️

Beautiful....i was born in the 60,s but id live there happily.........my great aunt stayed in the same house for 98 years from her birth....this cottage reminds me of her home.

@@inbetween-days .....our highlight was going to the gt aunts for a birthday tea as we knew clootie dumpling was on the menu and hidden within were sixpences wrapped in paper :)) .....outside toilet,no electric unti 70,s,coal for heat and gas lighting,no running hot water - just cold.....and of course an outside loo........the good old days...........hope suns out for you both at weekend.

Goodness knows how she coped with those stairs in later life [ ladders really! ] The photos really brought it to life especially the one at the end in the garden. Would have loved to sit and have a cup of tea with her out of one of the pink teacups. Good morning guys yes this is such a charming little cottage. They invite you to sit down and browse the photo albums and absorb the atmosphere. It really does feel like she will pop back in at any time. How she got up and down the ladders at her age I don't know they are quite steep and coming down is tricky I didn't manage it but even Dave was in awe of her agility. It reminds us of times when people would pop in and out of each others houses for a natter and cup of tea. Awh Mrs Smith sounds like she was a wonderful and much-loved lady. Loved looking around the cottage with you. Imagine paying £95 for a cottage like that! Wouldn't want to be doing those stairs at my age, let alone at 102, fair play to her. And that garden is so beautiful. Lovely video xx

It's a shame that the days where you popped around the neighbours for a slice of cake and a cuppa have gone. @inbetween-days I agree. I don't know my neighbours at all. It's quite sad isn't it. I'd love to be in a proper little community. But saying that, I wouldn't want people calling over randomly either haha. My great gran used to be like that though, there was always someone in her house!

This is just like Beamish museum near where I live. It is a museum village with homes from the 1820s to the 1950s, a church, a school, a pit, a 1950s farm from Weardale and all kinds of other attractions.

Thank you for sharing. Reminds me of my Grandparents who where all born in the 1880s and the old people of my childhood. Anytime you visited there house they always had cake they had baked and kept in a tin to eat with a cup of tea.❤

Climbing those ladders to her room must have been what kept her fit and all her visitors on a daily basis! Loved the section from her diary of her 100th birthday! Really enjoyed this guys! There are loads of snippets from her diary it shows a time where life was much more simpler but richer in many ways with friends and neighbours just popping in for a cuppa.
