I’m a doctor in gynaecology and mirenas are great!! Horror stories are spread over social media but the VAST majority have a brilliant result! It’s almost frustrating at work when trying to recommend them, because so many patients are adverse to the idea of coils as they have heard only bad stories. No one who has a great time with a mirena shouts about it, so that’s not the narrative that is heard. Regardless of your experience (but particularly if good) I think it could be so valuable to be on social media!

@@lisaban5095 if your problem is heavy/irregular periods the implant is probably less predictable than the mirena at stopping periods/making them lighter - I would recommend having a chat with a sexual health/contraception nurse or GP because everyone’s priorities are different and they can discuss which one would be best for you :)

I have a had Mirena for 6 months. Then had an ultra sound and the sonographer said it’s laying low. Should I get it taken out and replaced.? My Doctor says it’s fine even if laying low it just needs to be in there he said. but I’m not so sure

I just had mine inserted 9 weeks ago. At my check, my GYN can't find my strings. I had a ultrasound on Thursday. I'm waiting for those results. I've been bleeding everyday since they did the procedure. Now I'm having horrible lower back pain, cramping on the lower left side, and I just feel like crap. Pretty much blah 😔 I hope the strings are just coiled, but man! I feel like you, just putting up with everything you have been through! I am praying for the best for you!!!

Zanna I can relate wholeheartedly, as Ive suffered since I was 15 with the exact same problem. I’m quite a bit older than yourself and there was never really that support when I was experiencing the same problems. I had the more evasive treatment called Endometrial ablation but I already had my gorgeous 3 Children. I can say it was the best decision for me and have never looked back. I wanted to say that I totally understand and I really feel your pain. My school years, College, University, for decades that followed was extremely difficult month in month out and sometimes in between. I am really happy for you and sincerely hope you are amongst the 90%. Thank you so much for sharing this with such honesty Zanna. After years of very similar experiences with debilitating periods, cervical ecropion, frightening mental health dips caused by the pill, and much uncertainty, I'm also looking at the Mirena Coil as my only option. And honestly the only thing stopping me is people vocally sharing their horror stories. Which even if you know are the minority, boy do those voices sound loud when you're trying to make a decision about you own body! As girls we grow up believing that we have to accept the pain of periods. I always had heavy periods as a teenager, I even passed out once, I just put up with it. Then in my early 30s I remember the pain being so bad that I sat and cried at my desk in the office. I eventually got the courage up to see a gynaecologist and she told me I had a myoma (fibroid) the size of a grapefruit. I had to have an open c section to get the damn thing out! I also have endometriosis and the Mirena has kept it all under control. It’s now time to replace it and I’m bricking it as when it was put in I was under!

Hi there. I’ve got a 7cm submucosal in the uterine cavity. The solution the doctor is offering is a hysteroscopy and more an iud insertion to control the lining of the uterus and prevent heavy periods again. I’m a little anxious because I have not have an iud before and am worried about potential side effects as I tend to be very sensitive to hormones. I also have pmdd like symptoms some times. I’m not sure what to do.

Oh my. Being a woman can be soooo hard sometimes. Good for you to continue to seek help even after being discouraged. Thankfully here in Canada as in the UK we have fabulous medical professionals who will provide excellent care but you do have to be your own advocate. This is something I cannot stress highly enough. It is a skill and I learned it as I cared for my Mum as well as myself and my kids. It's easier to pursue treatment when you have support though. Well done Ant:)

Thank you for talking about it especially as a “healthy person”, I have endometrioses and everyone just says “my friend lost weight/changed diet/started doing sport/etc and it got resolved”
It’s soooo not the case for everyone, I tried it and nothing changes,
I got the coil as well and the adenomyosis (another condition I have which is the cause of my heavy bleeding) got much better, the pain of Endo is still bad.
It really is so sad that that medicine doesn’t understand “basic stuff” that so many woman have. I mean the population is 50/50 at the moment 😭😭😭

I had heavy periods and my doctor's said Mirena is the choice and believed them, for one year I had periods 11-14 days long and I was getting my period every 14 days. My emotions were a roller coaster! I came to a stage I stopped leaving the house, I absolutely hated going out. I was always out and enjoy going places before Mirena. Worse part is I had no libido what so ever!! I absolutely hated it when my husband touched me. I was keep saying if I didn't have sex for next 50 years I wouldn't give a damn about it. I never gain weight, I was at the same weight for the past 5 years but with Mirena I gained 15 pounds in a year. I got it removed yesterday, immediately I felt better, all of a sudden I'm happy again. Can't wait to get rid of the hormone it left in my body. I want my 7 days cycle back.

Hi Zanna, love your energy. I recently had my IUD inserted (fitted) in New York and I have the Kyleena (by the same company as Mirena but a lower dosage of hormone). I have been spotting and bleeding similar to your first Mirena experience since then for three weeks. Went to the doctor’s and hope this would stop in 3 months. Totally agree that period should not impact women’s ways of living this much. We should not walk around in pain and blood and we deserve a more free lifestyle. I love traveling too and just remember one time I had an extremely painful period at the border control in Panama and was sweating and pitching through my palms in 38 degree weather. Never ever want to relive that experience. Hope the best for you / us on this journey!

This video is so comforting to me. I too have gone through a journey with my periods and contraception. I like you, have debilitating periods where I am so heavy for the first 3 days that I feel like I can’t leave the house or exercise. They’re also incredibly painful to the point where I throw up and am in literal tears. The pains shoot down my legs it is so strange! And don’t get me started on the pms which lasts at least a week beforehand and has me riddled with anxiety, self doubt, nausea headaches and pure exhaustion. Add to this that I’m really irregular too. I always have periods but my cycle length varies so I’m always terrified to committing to plans incase I come on. Recently I had a month of bleeding for no reason. It is honestly a miserable existence. Like you I’ve had a scan and everything is “normal”. I’ve been scared to try the coil but I recently decided I’m going to after my next cycle. It is a horrible feeling not feeling in control of your body and I’m so ready to take back that control!

I have never heard of the word you use for heavy periods. I am really bad and can’t leave the house. I experience flooding for three days a month durning my period. I wear a super plus tampax and a night time towel and flood both every 15 minutes. I have sever anaemia I have to take so many painkillers. I have just finally give in to the coil, I’m 46. I didn’t bleed straight away, I was on time with my period but I have been bleeding heavily for 7 days now, I am praying it settles and the coil works for me. Thanks for your video.

Hey Zanna! Based on the symptoms you have described (heavy periods/ectropions), it sounds like your are oestrogen dominant…
I recommend reading a book called ‘How to fix your period’ by Nicole Jardim. She discusses this great detail (it’s a bit of a geeky read).
I have endometriosis which is an oestrogen dominant condition and have had a lot of similar issues to you. I work with an acupuncturist and Ayurvedic nutritionist to try to manage my excess oestrogen through diet and lifestyle xx

It's alot more common than you think and so pleased you have touched on it. I'm going through the same thing at the moment and ended up in hospital due to blood loss with severe anaemia i ended up dodging a blood transfusion but have two iron transfusion treatments and now waiting for a gynecologist appointment. Sadly women's health is not taken serious enough. I'm coming off the pill as it's causing some of my problems but I also have fibroids. I hope the coil works for you I've heard mixed reviews and refusing to have at the moment. Big hugs 🤗 ❤

@@tamaradavies3545 hello Tamara. Yes. I'm not quit %100 loving it. I have always had a hard time taking any type of birth control. This one also makes your period last for quite a long time. It's been about 45 days on my period. This is normal but hasn't been very fun. Nothing horrible has happened but I think I'm realizing that my body doesn't do well with it or inside my body. I'm seeing my doctor about what the next steps would be to get my adenomyosis in control. I may do an ablation and if needed a hysterectomy. I hope this helps in some way. Have a great day!

Usually women with very heavy bleeding have issues like endometriosis, fibroids, pcos and doctors, if they aren't specialized in these chronic illnesses they can't spot it. It can take 10-15 years for a diagnose like this. Also there are certain medical investigations made for them, like certain blood tests, MRA with contrast substance, laparascopy etc. Sometimes these problems can't be spotted when you have a vaginal ultrasound. But if you had all sorts of tests and it's not the case for these ones, then probably there is another cause for this heavy bleeding...there is a cause for everything happens in our bodies, but important is that you found a solution and I wish that this works for you, because I know how hard it is with heavy debilitating bleedings and menstrual pains , take care 🤗

Zanna, listening to your story makes my heart sink ! I really hope the treatment will help you🤎
In my past years I’ve been experiencing a complete absence of periods for more than 5 years due to the psychological rejection of this natural process at all( I just hated them, and it stopped). I wasn’t doing anything for a couple of years thinking of how convenient it is not to bleed every month (I know, stupid). Then I found a great doctor and she recommended pills that did help, but I didn’t want to take them for the rest of my life.. When I met my husband 3-4 years later, my body started to accustom to the new lifestyle, I stopped taking the pills, and now I’m more or less great (some irregularities do take place, but as it used to be in the past, it’s just light and unobtrusive
    Xoxo

!!!!!! I had the EXACT same condition a year ago!!! I woke up one day to find blood flooding out, did allll kinds of test but they all came back normal, except being newly anaemic. Ultimately I moved country so I missed my appointment to fit an IUD in and I'm now left with tranexamic acid pills. Weirdly tho the menorrhagia kind of went away :/. My periods now are just really uncomfortable on the heavy days :/
But I still want to try the mirena for the benefits, so thank you so much for sharing this!!!🥺🥺
