Some savings around the weight and the speed increases are considered.

I’ve been watching pro bike races for a long, long time. One “feature” that I’ve witnessed time and time again, when a Specialized Bike is involved in a crash, you get “two for the price of one” 😉

If I crash my bike, after insurances I can pretty much buy any replacement bike that I want. So not really a problem now is it?

Waiting for cut up, and checking tolerances. Can't wait when specialized introduce rim brakes as faster option. That would be hilarious
they will first need to invent rim brakes that can handle the fastest tyre size of 35c (paired with 30mm internal rims of course)

@@redhel No invention is necessary, such brakes already exist, namely short arm linear pull brakes. They would require canti studs, of course.
As soon as I saw the bike I knew it was complete HYPE. The head tube solves the fork problem. The stays exactly copy the new Allez Sprint Disc. All the aero gain IMHO is the handlebar and head tube bulb. They solved there own self created problem and sold it to you as complete BS to sell more bikes.

They are masters at marketing. No question. Watch the videos on CZcams and you get hypnotized.......for a split second. Then I snapped out of it and coughed up the word Bullsh*t!! I'm no engineer, but that thing looks like a noodle in that BB area. My Sworks SL5 has much more material in the BB area and it is flexy. I can only imagine this one.

About 30mm axles in BSA frame, there is also another issue.
There is very little room between the shaft can the cups. So little if some sand is making it's way there (from the seatpost tube or the derailleur routing hole) it can damage (grind and corrode) the crankset shaft and even block it. (I'm a bike mechanic during my free time and I've seen it).
OMG I smelt a rat with this frame set and you’ve confirmed everything. Need more of these videos, amazing information & entertainment.
Between this video and the video from Peak Torque, it would seem that if you are considering this bike, save your money, find a good SL7 on the used market and slam the best/fastest bar/stem combo on it that you can find and you will be at or ahead of this bike and you will have saved a lot of $$.
And optionally spend your savings on a wheel/tyre upgrade
Listening to PT the steer tube on the SL7 seemed pretty bad.
Or buy a new Chinese frame, so you aren’t paying for advertising and sponsorships.
Or not buy Specialized at all, and go for a company that invests more in research rather than marketing.

Let's be honest, anybody who's willing to just go out and drop 15 grand on this bike is probably not watching this video. Specialized will sell loads because their main customers for this bike have more money than they know what to do with. This video is purely for the people who are bike tech nerds, and like to be up on the latest tech but not actually wanting to buy the latest tech. Most of us are happy with what we have, or if we're looking to upgrade. We're looking for a killer deal and this is not going to be it. It's just validating our suspicions that's all. Correct me if I'm wrong.

15 grand is only the SWorks version. The Pro is half the price and rather nice. Except for the colour.
Just for reference I'm still rocking a Super six evo hi-mod from 2016 that I got new, old stock frameset.
You will not catch me buying any of these train wreck, trash bikes for 14-16k. I’m waiting for the ISO flow to start snapping, especially for heavier riders like me, when they hit pot holes, or anything really, and they redesign the whole Madone bike.
The best Specialized bike, STILL, is the aluminum Allez bike, and they screwed that up by getting rid of the rim brake version.

Thanks for the overview. I’m glad they did something to address the steerer tubes snapping. I’m wondering if the Allez Sprint has the same abysmal steerer as the SL7 or something similar to what we see in the SL8.

What's your opinion of Factor's 'D' shape steerer tube? I don't like the systems that use a 1.5" top bearing and the big plastic washer for brake line routing. The Factor system might be a better design?

I have a Yoeleo R11 from late 2021, mine has a metal part for the cable rooting (probably not the one which you had in your mind at 7:05) which is also open like the Tarmac SL7. Should I ask Yoeleo if they offer a closed plastic part or how can I reduce the risk of snapping? I disassemble the headset every few months to check the wear on the fork steerer but I think I would be more comfortable if there would be a better alternative..

Disc Brakes with numerous maintenance problems when rim brakes work just fine, Unlimited pressfit bottom bracket variations to solve a problem that didn't exist, bottom bracket shells that are misaligned due to manufacturing neglect all being forced on us at ever escalating prices that risk making cycling both unenjoyable and unaffordable at the same time !!!

For the price of an SL8 you can buy two Kawasaki Ninja 650's brand new out the door and with a few after market add-ons have 2 killer street bikes. Goes to show how utterly silly non powered bicycle pricing has become.

That's a lots of time over a race distance, but they aren't tested in racing. They're tested statically in controlled conditions where 0.5% is well within the margin of error of any equipment they're using. It's an untestable & unprovable claim.

I'm always curious about how the ride of an aero road bike. I'm going to race my 2nd duathlon next week with my old steel bike (got 4th place 2 months ago for my age category). Im planning to borrow an aero carbon wheelset , can it improve my time and hopefully be in the top 3 😅?

6:35 - There is no 3:1 rule anymore. They use tube envelopes instead (80mm max if I recall correctly)

Enduro makes a bsa30/dub bb that's steel, and the outer race and the threaded part are one piece. My first thought when I saw it was that somebody finally made a bb that's truly not pressfit.
Do you think they have created a frame for pro's, sponsored riders and riders with deep pockets after seeing SL7 frames snapped in races surely removing more carbon and wall thickness will make the frame more fragile for use by club riders, racers and sportive riders, transporting them in and out of cars, the bike falling over, minor knocks and spills, collisions etc the risk of frame damage must be amplified

I was working for Spezialized Europe during SL4 times and they already had different frame geo for the pro´s. They had much shorter headtubes etc. I had one too, there was a huge difference between normal maket and pro frames. Wouldn´t be suprised if they now also have frame with another layup for pro riders.

Just get an aluminum frame. I would. Carbon is nice, but to me at least not worrying about how and where I lean my bike is way nicer. I don't mind carbon forks, wheels and seatpost, but the frame... I remember when I had my Tarmac SL4, it was nice but I noticed I would chicken out so much when riding it out of fear of crashing and breaking it. The days I rode my Allez I noticed I would just throw the bike into a corner without a worry.
@@mrteefoursix3440 the frames the pros ride have to be commercially available for sale to the general public within a set time period of time from the first test ride in the pro peloton, i think its around 6 months otherwise it breaks UCI rules

the bottom bracket, most aluminium alloys or derived alloys will flex.
@@Hambini Got it and I'm running and old school square taper bottom bracket. Which is renowned for flexing, made of heavy metal as you know, converting that to a titanium version wouldn't amount to any stiffness benefit right? Apart from weight savings
Would you be able to look into mountain bike designs too?
I feel that MTB has more dependance on component manufacturers (forks, shocks) so they aren't able to come up with questionable design like what we're seeing here on the headset.
The discussion on new mountainbike frames seem so largely center around geometry, and less on weight so a part of me is hopeful Spez still has decent MTBs.
The background to my question: I'm considering a Spez Epic Evo, and also an Orbea Oiz 2023. Both brands have been shafted here, and while I feel less attached to Spez, the Epic Evo seems like a great XC bike.

When I was in an alpine secret french resort I met a girl in the lift que. We talked a while and I asked her about snowboarders. She said they alllways do weed. At the time I was on regular skiis. I asked her aproach of monoskiers - that I usally ride.! She litt up directly and said. Oh these guys are on "speed". Me myself went into an inner short mental crises. Didn´t know what to say. We kissed each other goodbye and since I´ve never seen her ever after.

Durianrider just put out a video where he actually paid full retail for the bike. He showed us the receipt: almost $20000AUD! He compared this to the 2008 model with rim brakes and aluminum clincher wheels. The 2008 model was actually lighter! This bike offers absolutely no advantage whatsoever to the average rider, and only the most marginal of gains to a handful of elite pros in a handful of racing situations. It's nothing more than a hideously expensive flex for dentists.

Snapped a carbon steerer at a pretty lucky moment...replaced under warranty with a CrMo steerer. 14 years later, still no problems. The carbon steerer forks were recalled later, BTW

Noticed during the TdF and World Championships that eg Julian Alaphillipe was using what looked to be a round/cylindrical 2-piece stem and handlebar, which I thought weird since Specialized has been hawking their aero 1-piece bars or even aero 2-piece systems for years…
IIRC Quick-Step had a sponsorship agreement with Pro components at the time.

Think Alaphillipe's long past his sell-by date with the Big-S. No special frame molds for him like Boonen and Sagan(?) so he's gotta make a "too big, too small or close enough" frame work. Big-S must not have a one-piece bar/stem of the right dimensions so he's gotta tough-it-out with (horrors!) a separate, bolt-up setup to make the damn thing fit. The "aero" penalties of that must be why he's no longer winning....right?
@@Ridewithjst if they were providing that for anyone, they would for Alaphillipe, he’s one of the biggest/if not the biggest name rider in France. He’s worth a lot, win or lose. I think he prefers the older style bars because he climbs on the top bar a lot, it’s more comfortable in the old round bars

the forks are the wrong way round. Makes it look rather odd.

Not quite clear what’s being said about the aerodynamic ‘gain’. If Specialized say it’s a 4 watt saving at 40kph, is that measured with an identical rider in an identical position or have they ‘simply’ blown air over a bare frame / handlebar and measured the difference? Or something else? I’m curious if an aero handlebar can make much difference with a relatively huge rider right behind. So you get beautiful smooth flow of air hitting a brick wall, sort of. So how much does the aero handlebar help, apart from looking cool?

Shimano used to market aero advances by putting each part in a wind tunnel. Meanwhile, actual university studies show the type of gloves and head position make much more significant effects.
Well the handlebar may be aero, but the fifteen thousand times they move their hands to shift gears, grab water bottles, wipe their heads, nose, ass, and whatever else…
And then they ride with the jerseys wide open, they have watches on, necklaces, etc…

l think if these bike makers were actually stiffer more aero etc then the bikes they make now should stiff as a brick and aero drag of 0 by now which we all as a load of RUBISH !! I LOVE THAT YOU ALWAYS CALL EM OUT !!

Amazes me how many 'influencers' have pinged into my feed with the SL8. Never seen anything like it. That frame is plain ugly, honestly keep your 4w watts at 45kmh. Recently went back to steel, everyone talks about them being retro, honestly you can build a seriously light quick bike out of high grade steels these days that won't be junk in 4 years time and simply anything but retro with modern components. I won't be wondering if the 685g of carbon between my legs is gonna explode at every small bump in the road at 50mph on descents either. My front steerer tube is tiny by comparison, probably a third of that thing, it would have to have one third the Cd to be as good from an aero point of view. As a road bike, it is faster than any carbon frame I have had and the material is well understood to build both compliance and stiffness into the frame where it is needed. ( Decades of proven information on that) Modern components, larger tyres etc make a new steel bike a completely different proposition to what was available before the rise of carbon. Performance is over 95% you anyway, not the bike.
That's how they make their living. By getting gullible fools to click on their vids that pose as "independent reviews" when in reality they are nothing, but paid outside marketing reps for firms like Specialized, Trek, etc... Guys like David Arthur, Outdoorbros, GravelCyclist, Thegravelcyclist, GCN, Ben Delaney, GC Performance, NorCalCyclist, The Radavist, etc..... These are all pathological lying and disingenuous assclowns pretending to give legitimate unbiased info on these products and of course they are not doing that at all. Still amazes me how many gullible fools subscribe to their laughable channels or click on their moronic vids over and over. Fools abound. 🙂

I’m going to buy that cause it’s going to give me 8 watts cause it has the newest aero technology . So cyclists that ride bikes today are at least 100-120 watts faster then cyclists in 2000 . 8 watts per year approximately in aero tec annually! By 2040 we can all be at 7-9 watts per kilo
For $14,000 you can buy a 2013 Acura RDX
But the lads who buy those sort of bikes don't care what second hand car they could get for equivalent money. They all drive new premium class German cars.

How light could a 56cm frame be made to still be ridden over normal people roads, and not snap into bits? Assume it's not going to fall over and hit the lawnmower in the garage in this scenario, just riding. And then, same question, but I'd like it to survive accidents, and normal riding. What's our limit in weight?
The 2012 Cannondale Supersix Himod Evo frame was 695gms in a size 56 and strong enough for Peter Sagan to win the World Championships on. And a very comfortable general purpose road bike.

I don’t ride nor have any interest in cycling but find the precision engineering in todays bikes fascinating. What’s equally fascinating is the price tag. $14,000 for a bike, sheesh. Out of interest what is the most expensive bike some John Doe off the street could buy? Not tailor made etc, but just off the rack frame n parts etc.
